The S&W Market is a place you should visit, dine, booze and chill at while in Asheville. I love…read moreart deco buildings, so of course, when I was walking around downtown Asheville and saw this beautiful, historic building, I knew there was something special here. Lo and behold, the S&W Market is a food hall, serving different vendors/food options with a brewery on the second level. I later learned that this building actually was a cafeteria back in the day, so naturally, it would be a modern day food hall while still embracing its historic setting. It's worth a gander, at the very least. It's not the biggest food hall, but what they offer is quality. If you want the best fried chicken sandwiches, hot dogs with inventive toppings, Peruvian empanadas, street Thai food, handmade ice cream or local craft beer, then you've come to the right place. It's a fun place to grab a bite and drink and sit where many others have.

The coffee was excellent as well. This is a great small breakfast stop in the heart of town. Although it was my first visit, I will definitely be returning. Counter service, plenty of seating, and a charming old Art Deco building located across from the (drum circle - Pritchard) park round out the experience.

First, let's be clear the reason to eat here is good Jamaican food at reasonable prices, not…read moreambiance. It's in the food court of Asheville Mall, which like most malls is struggling these days. The good side of that is most of the crappy chain mall food outlets are gone, leaving space for a local business to take its place. It seems like a family run operation. They had a decent selection of menu items (but they were out of a few things, which seems a little strange for Saturday lunchtime). The food was good, which is the key thing. I haven't been to Jamaica so I can't compare it to food there, but having had Jamaican food a number of times in the US and Canada, I'd say it among the best I've had. We ordered 2 Small entrees: chicken curry and jerk chicken. Each came with 2 sides. There was a perfect amount of food for lunch. Medium might be good for dinner, but I can't really imagine getting a Large unless you're splitting it, saving some for leftovers or you're a really big eater. The (bone-in) chicken in the curry was delicious. It was so tender it basically fell off the bone. The curry sauce was excellent. It went well with the yellow rice we selected for this entree. We choose the plantains as the second side for this one, and while a bit chewy, they were good. The (bone-in) jerk chicken was also good, although between the two I liked the curry better. The jerk chicken had been grilled nicely with dry jerk seasoning, but they also provided optional jerk sauce, which was good on both the chicken and the side of brown rice with Jamaican peas (similar to black-eyed peas) we got with this entree. The sauce was dark and smoky with a good amount of jerk heat. As the second side for this entree, we got cabbage. I'm not sure what all they do to this side dish, but it was surprisingly flavorful. It had some carrots mixed in along with spices like rosemary and somehow they had created an almost rue-like sauce. It was very savory. Based on the taste, quantity, quality and price of the food alone, I'd give this place a 5. But the service was close to rude. Like it was a big bother to take our order and provide us the food. That costs them a star. Even at a fast food counter in a mall food court, if you are a business owner or server, you can be friendly, or at least passably nice. Still, given the food itself, we'd go back.

Dont be fooled by Food Court setting. The food is much more than I had expected. I've been a couple…read moretimes and gotten the jerk and the bbq chicken on seperate occasions. This trip, pic attached, was for bbq. The plate comes with a bed of rice as shown. Both visits I've gotten the cabbage. It's been flavorful both times. Before I forget, be sure to get the sauce over the rice..you'll be glad you did. Oxtail available both times I visited but had such good meal with the chicken decided to just stay with that this trip.

Ordering was easy with the worker but there was also an iPad to order off of that looked like it had photos on it which is helpful. I got the summer roll and pad Thai. The summer roll came with no shrimp and very basil-forward, which is not like any of the other summer rolls I've had in other locations. The pad Thai dish was nice size considering the $18 price and it was tasty, they included a nice amount of bean sprouts! My friends liked their udon noodles and pot stickers. My friend ordered a side of fried rice and it didn't look like normal fried rice, but we saw a plate of fried rice go out to another table and it looked like it should have so not sure what happened there. Overall happy with our visit and glad we came!
