Move over Punahou Carnival! The 50th State Fair is back in town?! And with less lines and no one bumping or shoving you!
The 50th State Fair runs during the weekends during the summer (this year from May 22 through July 5). We went on Sunday, May 31 so prices reflect that day.
PARKING: Parking is $5.00 per vehicle at the Main Salt Lake Gate 1 & Halawa Gate 3. On Sunday's before 3:00pm, the cost is $1 per person. There's plenty of parking at the stadium but does get a little more crowded when there's a graduation occurring. There's parking attendants to assist if needed.
PRICES: Admission is $5.00/person or free for children under 40" tall. There's special admission rates for certain days. See http://alohastadium.hawaii.gov/main/the-50th-state-fair/ for special admission days. Ride wristbands are $35 for 10 rides. (Some days are $20 for a 10 ride wristband.) Games average $1.00-2.00 and prizes are the typical stuffed animals.
FOOD: There's limited options for foods. This year, aside from the traditional burgers, fries, funnel cakes, cotton candy, pizza, and candied apples, there were 4 other food trucks. The food trucks were Blue Teppanyaki, Mahoe's, Huli Huli Chicken, and Olay's Thai food. I ordered the Large Veggie Pad Thai ($9.00 for full plate), Thai Basil Chicken plate (comes with sticky rice), and Pork Spring Rolls from Olay's Thai food. Portion sizes are pretty reasonable and food is not bad for a lunch truck. This truck is the same as seen at Eat the Street. From Mahoe's, we ordered the Hawaiian Combo plate (Lau lau and Kalua Pig for $12) and Kalua Pig plate ($9). Entrée portion is kinda small and comes with salad and 2 scoops of rice. French fries are $2 for a cup. Not amazing but it's a fair...what else do you expect?
ENTERTAINMENT: There's pig races, petting zoo, and "A grizzly experience". The pig races are so adorable! I want one! The petting zoo charges $3 for admission! I swear it was free before! And the grizzly bear show is free and running from May 22 through June 7 only. It's more of an educational show as opposed to an act. But it's pretty cool to check out!
GAMES: Games are the same as they always have been. Dime toss, balloon darts, basketball, milk jug, goblets, ring toss, etc. Eh they're okay. Stuffed animals range in sizes from very very small to of course the big ones! Some of the workers aren't the friendliest either :/
RIDES: Zipper, Techno Power, Pharoah's Fury, Ferris Wheel, Fire Ball, Magic Maze, Wave Swinger to name a few. Most rides only last a minute or so but at least the lines aren't ridiculous like at Punahou Carnival! I hadn't seen Area 51 before, which you stand up against a wall and the centripetal forces keep you there. Not recommended if you get motion sickness. Techno Power is pretty fun if you can handle being spun around! And the ride is MUCH longer than the Zipper! I was screaming my head off during some of the rides and I'm pretty sure some of the kids gave me funny looks! But hey, we can act like kids every once in a while right?
Overall, I guess my view has changed since I was a little kid. I remember the 50th State Fair being the highlight of my summer! But I think it is still a good place to take your family, especially kids. read more
