Over the decades I've noticed that many non-profits boast about helping Veterans or seniors or disabled, than fail at helping A Veteran, A senior or A disabled. Not so with national non-profit Rebuilding Together, formerly known as Christmas in April, as I've saw at their Rebuilding Together Day events I've attended in Northern California and Northern Nevada.
There's no place like (a safe and accessible) home.
April is National Rebuilding Month and National Rebuilding Day is a day set aside annually to bring local communities together in the effort to assist low-income homeowners in need of home repairs, maintenance and small improvements. It's observed on the last Saturday of April.
30 April 2022, I attended two National Rebuilding Day events hosted by Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada.
Shazam! Here I saw a salient way, both the anchor and the pixie dust, to save and help seniors and disabled at the same time. Because none more cherished in a senior's or disabled life than those who lighten the burdens of a senior or disabled from age and / or disability / limited fixed income.
Chance favors the prepared mind. This non-profit was great at being prepared.
I started the day at one event location and ended it at the other event location. Although it was clear its Board of Directors, Executive Director and staff were new to their jobs, it was just as equally clear they all had meaningful transferable skills and are quick learners. They did an admirable job for National Rebuilding Day 2022 in Reno and Sparks, Nevada. Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada had chosen two homes, they were organized and prepared, put up banners, assembled some couple hundred volunteers, brought in donated equipment, supplies and materials, provided no-charge water and lunch to volunteers, and accomplished a LOT of no-charge to the homeowner home repairs, maintenance and small improvements, all at each home in one day. Wow.
What was particularly heartwarming to me as was that the two homes chosen were the homes of two different individual Veterans, AND that each Veteran was elderly and disabled. It brought tears to my eyes to see just how up close and personal Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada was with each individual Veteran at their home.

Good intentions only go so far. To truly help others, you have to take action in some way. Similarly, you have to be active in your faith in order for it to be truly meaningful. It is business such as Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada that are on the front lines of fighting to reduce the staggering and horrifying number of Veterans, seniors and disabled who daily succumb to suicide. Veterans succumb to suicide at twice the rate of non-Veterans. In Nevada, Veterans succumbing to suicide is a staggeringly 74% higher that that already horrific rate. Older adults make up 12% of the US population, but account for 18% of all suicide deaths. CDC also reports adults with disabilities were 3 1/2 times more likely to report suicidal ideation in the past month compared to persons without disabilities.
A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference. -- Eeyore
Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada is always in need of money and volunteers because they EVERYDAY are repairing, maintaining and improving Veteran, seniors and disabled homes; NOT just during National Rebuilding Month or National Rebuilding Day. https://www.facebook.com/ReBuilderNNV/
Only issue was that in my checking back with these Veterans, there were some warranty issues that still needed fixed months later. Probably because they need more volunteers.
