Everything was so great, so memorable, My daughter dressed up and fit right in, all the volunteers (yes, everyone who took part is a volunteer) wer so kind expecially to the kids in the crowd. We can't believe we learned so much and in such a fun way too. Few helpful tips, we went middle of June and there were soooooo many mosquitoes idk if I just want thinking, or they just tend to eat me alive in the evenings only but bring lots of bug spray. There's 2 cars that have windows and 2 that don't so if it's a full ride be prepared dress appropriately depending on the time of year u visit. Like I mentioned earlier these are all volunteers, they make their clothing and provide their own weapons and blanks. The upkeep of the train and tracks is very costly so donations are very appropriate. Be sure to bring plenty of smaller bills and most of the town would prefer cash purchases as well. There's also a flea market held here so check for that. There's also mining for Gold lessons and some areas to try it first hand. If you find real Gold flakes you can keep up to 3 for 5$ per person because it's coming from an Oregon State Park. There is a lift on the train to help with any handicap needs, and on that note if you end up in Bakers City, OR (were we drove through to get here) is an amazing playground where inclusion of all ability types was number 1 in design. This entire experience was so great, worth Every penny for the steam engine ticket and worth the money we donated at the end.

The tour was about 1.3 hours long, and you'll need to climb and descend stairs and squeeze into small spaces. If any of that sounds like a challenge, it might not be the right fit for you. Our tour guide was "BRAD," and he was amazing! He's practically "been there, done that." He grew up exploring these tunnels with his friends and has all sorts of stories to share. You'll learn a lot about the history and some simple sayings that will make you laugh and give you a deeper understanding. For example, there's a "Shoot" of whiskey! From the outside, you have no idea how huge this place is, and we only get to see a small part. Don't miss out if you get the chance. We'd definitely go back and bring a friend who hasn't seen it before.

The price of the ticket included a free drink token, 3 shots during the tour, and a sample of a local meat company. The tour was led by Matt and is meant for mature adults who don't get upset or offended by certain language. It was such a fun tour. Matt told us the history while making it fun throughout the whole 2 hour tour. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who wants to add a little bit more fun to the tour.

The road gets pretty windy once you hit Copperfield, but the views of Hells Canyon and Snake River are worth it! There are quite a few pull-outs to stop and take pics. We also passed numerous campground and picnic options. We enjoyed driving over the dam and taking pictures from both sides. Such beautiful views! If you follow the road to the end, passed the dam about 0.5 mile, you come across the visitors center. It was closed when we arrived, but we did enjoy watching the rafters and kayakers from the back deck. Would highly recommend a visit!

To access the dam, you pick up Hells Canyon Road at Copperfield (if coming from the Oregon side) and snake your way up along the Hells Canyon Reservoir for about half an hour. It's a scenic drive that offers plenty of places to pull off and swim, and quite a few trailheads for hikes up into the Idaho side of the canyon. The route takes you along the base of some very steep cliffs and overhangs, and you can tell by the dents in the blacktop that there are often rockfalls along here. My wife was white-knuckling it during most of the ride out. The dam itself is nothing too spectacular, but it does sit in a very scenic spot on the river. Once you cross the dam, the road ends in a boat launch, and this is where the adventure begins. Here you can put in for kayaking, rafting and drift-boat floats down the canyon. Fishing abounds. The dam itself has a little visitor's center with historical photographs and a couple of Idaho Power employees who can answer questions. We were able to get some good info on road quality for our forthcoming drive up the forest service roads into the Wallowas. Super helpful! If you're not floating or fishing or otherwise using the recreation side of the river, there's not a whole lot to do here other than learn about the dam and take in some pretty scenic views from the canyon floor. It's almost more about the views on the drive in. And you'll be seeing them again on the drive out, as there's nowhere to go from here but back the way you came.

My tour guide was a tall guy, unfortunately, I cannot remember his name. He was very informative about the museum and about the home. I felt sad at one point because the last person to own the home/business, went for a simple procedure and unfortunately passed away. You can still see the date he left on the calendar. The museum was very informative and some of the patient letters were very touching. This is a very nice gym within the small town of John date. Also, when you go into the reception center/gift shop you will see all of the items people have found in their yards that date back to the early 1900s. I highly recommend visiting the museum with a guided tour.

An important piece of Oregon and Chinese history, a must see!…read more I felt very fortunate to have visited the Kam Wah Chung Museum on my recent trip to Oregon. Seeing how the early Chinese settlers came to the US under harsh working environment, racial discrimination, language barriers and away from their families made me realized how resilient and strong of all these Chinese men. Being part Chinese and an immigrant myself, I could relate to some of their struggles. Located in John Day on the main street, this musem contains two parts. The first part is the museum with glass cased exhibits with illustration of early Chinese settlers and brief descriptions of the lives of Doc Hay and Lung On. The second part of the museum is only available as a guided tour, where you can enter the living quarter and pharmacy of Doc Hay and Lung On. I highly recommend taking the guided tour of the living quarter/pharmacy of Doc Hay and Lung On, as the staff tried to preserve all the original details back in its days. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, and she mentioned each single detail (down to mouse trap) in the house. The front of the house contains a red chair that Doc Hay would take your pulse and determine your health, with the pharmacy right behind his chair. We also saw Doc Hay's bedroom, common kitchen, sleeping quarters and Lung On's room. The most striking part of the tour was when guide mentioned how the Chinese settlers had to lock themselves in every evening to avoid getting shot by drunk white people. They also set up a water pump inside (vs. outside) of the house to avoid leaving the safety of the premise. Despite the harsh circumstances, I saw many posters on the walls of spending good time with friends and making huge fortunes. I admired their optimism and hard work under such extenuating circumstances. Overall, this is an important part of Oregon and Chinese history that you should definitely see. It is wonderful to see deliberate efforts are made to feature the contribution of minorities to the US history. It is also heartwarming and yet bittersweet to witness the obstacles our ancestors overcame to give better lives to future generations. Inspirational and highly recommend!
