What a fantastic piece of history! It is so neat to see this gold digging/extracting machine in such relatively good shape. You can even walk inside of it, though all of the upper levels are closed to the public due to rotten floor boards. There are also a few short trails that wander through the tailings (the waste product from the dredge). The visitor center houses both a gift shop and small museum. Fair amount of parking, but I only remember seeing porta-potties?

Everything was so great, so memorable, My daughter dressed up and fit right in, all the volunteers (yes, everyone who took part is a volunteer) wer so kind expecially to the kids in the crowd. We can't believe we learned so much and in such a fun way too. Few helpful tips, we went middle of June and there were soooooo many mosquitoes idk if I just want thinking, or they just tend to eat me alive in the evenings only but bring lots of bug spray. There's 2 cars that have windows and 2 that don't so if it's a full ride be prepared dress appropriately depending on the time of year u visit. Like I mentioned earlier these are all volunteers, they make their clothing and provide their own weapons and blanks. The upkeep of the train and tracks is very costly so donations are very appropriate. Be sure to bring plenty of smaller bills and most of the town would prefer cash purchases as well. There's also a flea market held here so check for that. There's also mining for Gold lessons and some areas to try it first hand. If you find real Gold flakes you can keep up to 3 for 5$ per person because it's coming from an Oregon State Park. There is a lift on the train to help with any handicap needs, and on that note if you end up in Bakers City, OR (were we drove through to get here) is an amazing playground where inclusion of all ability types was number 1 in design. This entire experience was so great, worth Every penny for the steam engine ticket and worth the money we donated at the end.

We went out exploring. Looking for a lake we have talked about for year's. Found the lake but we…read morealso found some really cool places along the way. Joseph was poppin. The weather was also decent. Joseph is no fool. While it was a weekend, the other towns nearby were all but shut down. Not Joseph. Most of the shops were open. Restaurants full of people. Sidewalks bustling with pedestrians. We had other plans, we traveled a couple hours to get here and still had the drive back. We literally had only planned on stopping at the post office in Joseph. I thought it would be funny to mail my Uncle Joseph in California from Joseph, Oregon. Apparently, I'm the only one who thinks I'm funny. My Wife is immune to my hilarious nature. Although Joseph is a little out of the way, we are planning on a summer trip back. There was so much to see in Joseph that we would need to park and walk around to see everything. We love camping in the area, so Joseph is just another reason to come back this way.

Want to get away from it all and relax in one of the most scenic places in Oregon? Then Joseph,…read moreOregon may be the place for you. This little hidden jewel of a town is located in NE Oregon. The city of Joseph was incorporated in 1887 and named after Nez Perce Chief Joseph who is buried there at Wallowa Lake. The population of Joseph is approximately 1000. The economy was primarily based on agriculture and timber until the 80's when 3 Bronze foundries opened and artists and galleries came to inhabit the town. The streets are lined with beautiful side walks and life size bronze statues. There are many art galleries and shops with unique items. A couple miles out of town is Wallowa Lake which offers camping, shopping, hiking, boating, restaurants, a tram and wildlife viewing in a breath taking setting. In July, Joseph hosts the Chief Joseph Days rodeo, in August the Bronze, Blues and Brews Festival and in September Alpenfest which is a Swiss-Bavarian festival at Wallowa Lake. People refer to Wallowa Lake as "Oregon's Little Switzerland". The people of are so nice here too. I could go on and on about this town and the area so if you have questions feel free to ask. Joseph is amazing! 2015-80
