So that means for the next several Fridays, we'll be having dinner with a zillion of our fellow 'Burghers packed into church basement cafeterias. Our recent fish fry adventures took us to St. Raphael (although this one is actually held in their elementary school, not the church itself). We had read good things about this one, and it's close to our house, so we figured we'd kick off the fish fry season there. As with most fish fries, there was quite a line when we went, but it seemed to move at a reasonable pace (I think we only waited about 15 minutes or so). Now, for obvious reasons, I don't expect fish fries to deliver the same quality as a restaurant. So I try to evaluate them relative to each other. Admittedly, I'm not a fish eater (yeah, I know...why am I reviewing a fish fry?) Well, I love fish fry season for the abundance of other homemade offerings -- haluski, mac and cheese, pierogies (seriously, is there anything better than a church basement pierogie?!) Anyway, the fish fry here was quite meh. I got the pierogie dinner with sides of mac and cheese and corn. My hubby (who IS an avid fish fan) got the fried fish sandwich with fries and slaw. Both meals also came with a roll. I was super excited about my pierogies, as they were drenched in butter and onions, like good artery-clogging pierogies should be, but I took a bite and -- ACK! Mrs. T's! These were not church basement pierogies. I was so sad. The mac and cheese was also clearly frozen and not good at all (flavorless and mushy). My hubby was pretty ambivalent about his dinner as well. He stated that the fish on his sandwich tasted like a run-of-the-mill frozen fish fillet -- not terrible, not great. Overall, compared to other fish fries in the area, both my husband and I thought that this one is pretty average.

Given that she'd never been to a fish fry before, I was excited to introduce her to this time-honored PGH Lenten tradition. Based on the crowd we encountered, this must be one of the most high volume fish fries in PGH--despite the ordering and fulfillment processes being fairly efficient, it took us over half an hour to order and receive our food, and there were at least 20 people ahead of us. For my meal, I ordered the fried fish dinner with mac and cheese and pierogies as sides ($10) . My friend, who's a GF eater, ordered the baked fish dinner with fries and cole slaw as sides ($10). Interestingly, our assessments of the food were complementary to one another. For my part, I enjoyed the fish, which had a nice crispy battered coating and was tender and flaky inside. However, I found the sides lackluster--the mac and cheese was a previously frozen variety that had clearly been microwaved based on its consistency, taste, and the way its foam container fell apart, and the pierogies, which were super bland, were clearly Mrs. T's. On the contrary, my friend said her fish had a weird texture, suggesting that it was overcooked. However, she enjoyed the sides--esp. the cole slaw, which was of the creamy variety. Nevertheless, the portion of cole slaw was on the small side in comparison to the other sides. While I don't hold fish fries to the same culinary standard as restaurants, the uneven quality of the goods at this one in comparison to others I've tried lead me to award a rating of 3.5. For an optimal experience, I suggest sticking to the fish sandwich (which comes with a seeded bun, I noticed!) with a side order of fries and cole slaw, and calling in an order ahead of time.

The facility is genuinely great. Strong indoor classrooms and a well-thought-out outdoor space. It's a place really built for kids, not a converted afterthought in an office building or a strip mall. The teachers actually know what they're doing. They are experienced caregivers who handle situations the way a seasoned parent would- calm, thoughtful, practical- rather than someone fresh out of a single child development class and improvising on the fly. They're sincerely kind to the kids. You cannot fake this, and you can see it instantly in how the children interact with their teachers. Our twins are comfortable, engaged, and happy. They love going to school. They've seen every kind of family. This one matters more than people realize. Stepping Stones has clear understanding and experience with the full range of modern family situations; foster placements, kinship guardianships, single-parent households, blended families, and all the moving parts those arrangements bring with them. They handle each situation with the same grace; No awkwardness, no extra questions, no treating any setup as a special case. Just good care for whichever kid is standing in front of them. Predictability, accountability, professionalism, and real warmth. That's what Stepping Stones has, and they show it consistently. Take the time to tour it. If you have any frame of reference at all, you'll see the difference within the first ten minutes.

From the start, every single staff member made us feel welcomed. The facility itself is fantastic--large classrooms, an expansive outdoor area, and a dedicated indoor gym that ensures the kids get to move even when the weather is bad. One of the most telling signs for me was noticing that the majority of the staff choose to enroll their own children here; that spoke volumes. The Director, Lauren Z., is remarkably kind and supportive. It's clear that the teachers truly know and care for every student, treating the children as if they were their own.
