Charlie is a dear, sweet, kindhearted, and tenacious child who loves making people feel valued. The…read morequalities he has always had now shine more brightly than ever. Early in third grade, I sensed something was off but couldn't pinpoint it. At home, he struggled to follow directions and became short with our family when things didn't go as he expected. That wasn't "The Charlie" I knew. I began researching right away and contacted his teacher and pediatrician. His teacher, Mrs. Smith, said she had noticed changes too--he was having trouble staying on task and following directions. His pediatrician suggested we have him tested. When I got this news, I was at a crossroads and a loss. I felt defeated in a way, I wanted Charlie to get tested for ADHD but I did not want him labeled for the rest of his school career if he did in fact have ADHD. I didn't want to medicate my child either. Feeling like there were no other options, I fell into a depression of sorts because I could not find an answer to help my son. Two weeks after the conversation I had with Charlie's teacher an ad came across my Facebook for Brain Balance. I was intrigued and clicked on the AD. I studied over the website over the course of 2 days and mustered up the courage to fill out the questionnaire form and once I hit submit we have not looked back. Charlie came to Brain Balance for testing while I met with Meghan, who walked me through each step of the process as it happened. After he finished, Meghan reviewed every assessment and explained the results in detail. I cried, laughed, and--most of all--felt empowered by finally having answers. Physically, Charlie was an 8-year-old boy, but developmentally he was functioning closer to age 5. Imagine being a typical third-grade student, listening to a lesson and then being expected to complete a worksheet or homework--yet not having the ability to make sense of it. No wonder he was frustrated; his brain simply couldn't process what he was being taught. Knowing this helped me feel hopeful, because we had identified the roadblocks and had a plan to remove them so his brain could function at his age level. Charlie handled the entire process with confidence. He never once complained about going to Brain Balance--in fact, he loved being there, and the challenges were right up his alley. He was always eager for more. Within a few weeks of starting, I noticed small changes, and as the months went on, those changes became huge strides toward functioning like the 8-year-old he is. The Brain Balance staff have made this journey supportive and manageable for our family. Charlie gained tools he can use for life to process and navigate challenges as they arise. I truly have an improved Charlie--our "Charlie 2.0." Thank you, Brain Balance, for helping our Charlie shine his brightest. Remember his name, because he is going far in this world.

The staff's motto at the WISCA program is basically: "If they can deal, then they can heal". If you are a low needs/high functioning student looking for a school to help prepare you sufficiently for the future, and not cause your mental well being to decline whilst doing so, do not go here. If you are looking for a job here- if you are willing to experience high stress levels, low pay, and a toxic work environment to help kids who need it- please apply. One of the main problems with this program is that they are short staffed all the time. I've had to handle anxiety attacks on my own, lay on the floor to take a break, and put up with loud noises, constant conflict between my fellow peers- that have frequently escalated to either shouting or violence, teachers talking down to me, or being condescending when I genuinely need the support, and I'm tired. I am planning to go back to my home school as soon as it's possible. If you are a low needs student- please use every available resource at your home school to help you, because going here won't. I believe that some staff here have good intention, and that this program has tons of potential, but higher-ups are not willing to make progress. Please look elsewhere if possible for special education purposes- this place is not worth the hassle.
