Had we been told in advance what type of event was taking place, we would have simply chosen another night. Guests deserve the opportunity to make that choice for themselves. This should have been disclosed at the time of reservation, not after customers were already sitting at their table. The only downsides are that you really need to make a reservation ahead of time for weekends, otherwise you might end up stuck at the bar or in a less atmospheric spot. Also, there are only two gender-neutral restrooms, so there can be a bit of a wait.
