Hunter's Point doesn't bring to mind anything so beautiful - usually you just hear about the toxic levels of pollution that they build affordable housing on top of - but that is a totally different converstion. The park has an elevation that is just enough to get great views from anywhere you look. I think this is the highlight. Hard to believe that such prime real estate was utilized for just a park. Newer everything at this park. Structures and landscape. Nothing is super perfect but it has a certain level of care that is more than good enough. the first time that i tried to session this park, it totally kicked my @$$. i hadn't been…read moreskateboarding very long at that point, and i just quickly swung by while my wife figured out something else to do that day because we originally drove up from the south bay to sf just for the grand opening of the california academy of sciences museum but couldn't get in because it was too crowded. anyway, skating this park takes full commitment. you really can't half.@$$ it out here. the downhill drop to the main plaza area as well as the pool coping and vert of the bowl are easily testament to that fact. the crowd is rough; you might find a friendly person here or there if you're lucky; but don't expect a whole lot of chit.chat,bring a skate buddy. mind your own business but watch out for others. both the bowl and the main plaza area have multiple entries, so show respect and keep it safe. soccer moms, this ain't the place to drop off a minivan full of kids before taking off to the spa. honestly, even though i'm a dad myself, playing babysitter at a skate park for other people's kids is never my favourite thing. if you're bringing your kids to skate at any park, you ought to stick around to watch them or, better yet, skate _with_ them! full.on suburbanites might get freaked out by all the bums and drug dealers that hang out in the park. they don't come into the skate area much but just stay out on the grass. this may not be the best park to "start off" at or to "get back into skateboarding" at. if you're just starting or restarting out, try somewhere a little more mellow like san josé's lake cunningham regional skate park or the sunnyvale skate park. better yet, consider taking a lesson over at ohana board shop in san josé. they have their own mini.ramp halfpipe to skate inside their shop. lock up your car and keep your valuables out of sight. as i said earlier, the first time i tried to skate this park, it kind of kicked my @$$. however, when i returned years later with a friend while doing a bay area skate park tour, man.. i had a blast!

I love that they allowed for artists to come and adorn the walls and overpass posts with color, culture and names of visitors past. There were a wide range of ages skating, biking, watching. Parents sat with their chairs outside of the complex looking on. There was even a gentleman whom sat by the entrance whom had set up a table and was streaming music. Everyone was very aware of their surroundings and there seemed to be this unspoken understanding of skatepark etiquette everyone was abiding by. It was a mixture of skateboarders and BMX enthusiasts. My 14 year old son has gotten really into skateboarding. It's what he got into during quarantine and this whole Covid thing. It was a way for him to incorporate some physical activity and something to concentrate on and hone in his skills with. I can tell he feels good and feels like he's in shape. He is mindful of what he eats on a daily and ensures he is drinking plenty of water. Not bad for a 14 year old huh? I think what has become a true passion has also helped him in the area of time management. Since he homeschooled for the 18 months or whatever it was he knew he has a set time frame to get school and school work done so that he could get his time in daily to skateboard and then still get online and play a few rounds on his gaming console. I really like how he evens out his time and prioritizes the way he does. I know some adults that cant get a hold of their time and here is this 14 year old in the middle of a pandemic crushing it. He continues to amaze me that one. Anyway, this skatepark. Since my son is passionate about skateboarding I've told him we should make an effort to seek out new parks for him. I sit and read or scroll through my phone and he does what he does and admires other people and their talents. It allows for him to see what he needs to work on and what he wants to accomplish. Every City needs these. They need a place for kids and adults to be able to do something positive and do what they love. There was no charge for this place. Parking is a little daunting as it IS SF but when you are in a City like SF you are aware of the "walking culture"..lol! We parked a couple blocks away. Place is clean and I assume since it is fenced in there is a closing time and someone comes and locks it so the park doesn't become a homeless encampment. It's a great place to visit if you need a place to let off steam, live and let go of all your cares getting some cardio in!

It was the first time our 9-year-old girl and our 6-year-old boy rode. Marco created a safe and challenging environment for them. They went through several different exercises that both built up their skills and confidence and at the same time got them excited about the sport. That's so challenging to do. In my experience classes are either to methodical and boring or over-challenge the kids and make them uncomfortable. Marco achieved a perfect balance and my kids are super eager to continue their riding. Thank you Marco, you contributed to a great day for our family!

I enrolled two kids (ages 8 and 11) in the Sk8gym summer camp program the week of July 20th. The…read moreteenage instructors were great with the kids, but the camp leadership and overall management tone made for a negative experience. Throughout the week, both of the kids reported a that instructor/owner was frequently shouting and harshly reprimanding young campers and the teenage instructors. During the final session, when the 11-year-old specifically asked the instructor/owner for guidance on how to ollie, instead of receiving coaching, he was told he could never learn the trick because of how he pushed on the skateboard. This left him in tears. Mind this is a camp to teach kids how to skate - of course they are not experts. When I contacted management directly to raise concerns about how the situation was handled, they refused to offer any accountability and instead placed the blame back on the child. While the staff on the ground are doing their best, I cannot recommend this camp due to management's unsupportive and harsh approach. Learning to skateboard should be a fun and welcoming atmosphere. This was not that.

There's a SLUG (League of Urban Gardeners) area too, so if you sign up way in advance, you might get your own plot of gardening land! You can take dancing lessons in the evening on Tuesdays at the community room by the parking lot, or join in the tai chi at the cement by the basketball hoops over the weekend. Only the playground is not dog-friendly. The rest of the park is great for walks. It's connected to McLaren Park, so really - you've got plenty of space to roam. And for the skaters in the house, there's a ramp on the other side of the park down Geneva towards McLaren. Gotta love my neighborhood park!

So, for example, until I wrote this review, there was no listing for Potrero del Sol Park. There is a listing called Potrero del Sol/La Raza Skatepark, but I couldn't very well have added a review to that listing because (a) I've never used Potrero del Sol Park's skate-park section and (b) I hate titles with slashes in them. Technically, a slash means either/or. So it's either Potrero del Sol Skatepark or La Raza Skatepark. Well, which one is it? I have a suspicion that the skate park is called La Raza and that the person who created the Yelp listing decided that this would be a good way to combine listings for the park itself and the skate park, but for reasons I have (hopefully satisfactorily) explained, the listing is inaccurate. I don't want that listing to be removed, but I consider it a place for people to review Potrero del Sol Park's skate park and not the entire park. So here's my review of the entire park. It's cute in a gritty way. I've seen strange, inexpert musical performances here. It's a kind of mini Dolores Park. OK, that might not be an accurate description; but the way the hipsters sit on the grass and do nothing at all but don't really sunbathe, read, or do anything that most normal parkgoers do reminds me of how the hipsters do (or don't do) the same thing at Dolores Park. And the grass can be just as frumpy as its Dolores Park counterpart. I've never really felt like I was physically in danger here, but it has all the makings of a dangerous park, and general uneasiness comes with the territory. I wouldn't leave anything valuable-looking in my car if I drove here (parking's very easy on San Bruno Avenue), and I probably wouldn't remain in the non-skate-park portion of the park after dark. If I hadn't worked at nearby San Francisco General Hospital for four years, I might actually want to live in the general vicinity just to have such a quirky place so close. But I now know too much about the neighborhood to actually want to be a resident. (People get shot at Papa Potrero's Pizza, yo--there literally was a shooting inside the restaurant.) One more thing that I will always remember about this park: funny purple octopi painted on odd bandstand columns.
