My partner and I were here the other weekend for dinner before going to the theatre as part of a pre fixe arrangement. Not knowing quite what to expect, it was a wonderful surprise to find that this place is classy and semi-formal--you're not out of place if you're dressed up, but it also looked like there was a family reunion happening in the corner, and they fit in, too.
That being said, for a fancy restaurant, the food itself isn't particularly Irish, mostly just the decor is. The serving sizes are huge, and there's complimentary soda bread available. I had the mac and cheese, which was delicious, and my partner had the vegetarian special (lentils and pumpkin) which was less enjoyable and fairly bland. I had the asparagus as an entree, which was good if a little plain. The house wine (red) was quite nice.
Unfortunately, the service is a bit of a let down--we had to ask for a water refill 10 minutes after they cleared the bottle, and while at the beginning of the meal it felt they were almost hustling us out of the restaurant, by the end of dinner we basically had to tackle someone to get the bill. If I could give 3.5 stars instead of 4, I would.
This was an enjoyable dinner, although improvements could certainly be made. I might go back the next time we have theatre tickets--now that I know how big the servings are, I'll work on saving room for dessert! read more
