Feeling a little swanky at it but still, cheaper than most of the traditional pubs surrounding it, a good area to get up and strut your stuff, and close enough the other aspects of "nightlife" in town (not to mention close to bed if you've opted for one of the travel lodges). No.1 felt like the perfect start to an active stratford night. Now i wouldn't normally review a place i had spent such a small amount of time in (without much of a yelp head on for it either - no food, no carefully laid tests for the staff). But one act from the staff compels me: We were walking into town, unsure where would be open, it was really very late. Two intimidating looking bouncers are stood outside No1 (as is their job). We pause across the road, wondering at a country bar that needs bouncers like that, i was about to walk on when they bellowed, "don't worry its nice in here, come on over!" Both with beaming smiles, one walked us in and pointed us to a good spot to sit and the other instructed my friend as to where to smoke (out the front it seemed was less windy that night). I was amazed, to be honest i'm used to bouncers being short tempered and sometimes pretty brash with you (thats just part of city life!). This is the first review i've penned where the security made a place worth visiting for me, well done guys!!

3 times a charm! We thought we'd be safe scoring a table for 4 for dinner at 5:30 PM, but…read moreapparently we forgot about the theater crowd in Stratford. After being turned away from 2 restaurants we found a good meal at Edward Moon. My meal... Appetizer: Crab/shrimp cocktail. It was covered in mayo (ick!) and therefore inedible. Don't order unless you're a mayo fan. Entrée: Seabass. Covered in lots of cream, but fortunately I liked this cream sauce a lot more than I like mayo. It was also served on a bed of spring onion risotto, which was even better than the actual seabass. Dessert: The Americans at the table decided on apple pie- go figure. While the one Brit at the table decided on some sort of banana pie. Both desserts were equally incredible, but the real winner of the evening was the hot chocolate with irish bailey. By far the best hot chocolate I've ever had....and it helped me sleep like a baby on the train going back to London right after our meal.

Lunch is served. Pleasantly greeted and brought to a table by the window, where we could watch the world walk by as we enjoyed our meal. A nice list of specials on the blackboard, plus a "special" menu with the regular menu. My traveling companion opted for the scampi, which was cooked in the English style of a breaded fish nugget and served with chips. I went with the two course meal, choosing a pate and relish starter and a burger as my main. The pate was quite strong and the relish cut it well. The burger was a bit on the plain side as were the chips. No draught beers, but they did have a reasonable selection of bottled offerings. I chose the Leffe, a Belgian favorite. The prices were decent, especially considering this is a fancy sit-down restaurant on the 'main drag' of Shakespeare's village.

The bistro is in a grade II listed building and is located only two minutes walk from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre so right in the bustling town centre. The furnishings are plush and comfortable with an array of different seating with soft cushions and there is a bar located next to the dining area - a great place to meet for pre dinner drinks. We were seated immediately and were given a few moments to pursue the menu. We ordered afternoon tea at £10.50 per head which included salmon and cucumber sandwiches, scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, victoria sandwich cake, and a pot of tea. The tea was lovely and very filling but I would have liked to have seen something else other than victoria sandwich cake as it felt like cream and jam overkill having that part of the scones too. The waitress service was friendly and attentive, and although we spent a couple of hours there I did not feel like we had to rush and vacate our table. If you have eaten or drunk a little too much, you can retire to one of their twelve ensuite bedrooms. A lovely bistro that I would happily return to again.

I had amazing pork, my boyfriend had beef stroganoff, both pretty good. The side of veg was totally tastless. BUT, the scallop special app was out of this world, and the toffee pudding (not Gluten Free, but I had to taste) was orgasmically yummy. Lovely!

Making a refreshing change from ye olde pubs, the Oppo is a modern French bistro with a good a la carte menu and a generous daily specials menu too. When we arrived, at about 5pm, they were nearly full already with a pre-theatre crowd (we were going too), but were able to give us a table in an area near the back, which was lovely and private. We only had time to stay for a main course, but if I was in the area again I'd happily try starters and puddings too. My boyfriend ordered the pork belly from the a la carte, which looked delicious, and I went for the large portion of moules mariniere avec frites. To my pleasant surprise there was not a single closed mussel in the bowl, and not even any that you had to really pry open. Every one had opened beautifully. And they were priced very reasonably too, the pork belly was about £13.75 and the moules were a snip at less than £9. Fab! The Oppo is a great choice for a pre-theatre meal in Stratford-upon-Avon, so much better than many of the pubs in the area for similar prices. But you should book if you can, it's very popular and you really don't want to miss out.
