315 Hardwoods - After staircase remodel

I hired this company to refinish the hardwood floors in my home, which are approximately 100 years…read moreold. Justin initially assured me that this would not be a problem. Unfortunately, my overall experience fell short of professional expectations. Initial Concerns On the first day, the owner arrived with an employee to begin work. After briefly applying wood filler for a few minutes, the owner informed me he had to leave. Before departing, he stuck out his hand without saying anything. I shook it which he didn't expect. he then told me he needed the cash. This rubbed me the wrong way. The remaining employee then attempted to connect equipment by pulling wires from two 20-amp breakers without using proper tools, despite my offer to check for a higher-amp breaker. This lack of care and preparation was concerning but I allowed work to proceed. Workmanship and Preparation No thorough inspection of the floor was conducted prior to sanding. Protruding nails were not set, and the floor was not vacuumed or swept before sanding began. When I raised the issue of nail setting, the worker dismissed the concern, stating "it'll be fine." The edging crew that arrived two days later displayed highly unprofessional behavior. One worker shouted profanities loud enough to be heard throughout the neighborhood. Their work caused significant collateral damage, including scuffs and gouges on freshly painted drywall, dents in metal corner beads, a 4-inch hole in the wall, and numerous dirty handprints. Finish Quality While the floors initially looked good before staining and polyurethane, the final product was unsatisfactory. There appeared to be little or no vacuuming between coats, resulting in debris embedded in the finish. When I raised concerns, this was blamed on the lack of heat in the house--though this explanation did not account for the poor preparation and cleanliness. Additionally, the sanding work left extensive waviness throughout the floors, significantly diminishing the overall appearance. Resolution The owner acknowledged the large hole in the drywall and offered $100 off the total price. While appreciated, this did not address the broader issues with quality and professionalism. Areas for Improvement This company needs to significantly improve in the following areas: * Professionalism and communication with clients * Attention to detail and proper preparation before sanding * Care to prevent damage to walls, trim, and other surfaces * Improved sanding technique to avoid floor waviness * Thorough cleaning between stain and polyurethane applications Final Impression Justin was courteous, but based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company without significant improvements to its professionalism, workmanship, and quality control.

I awarded Solid Rock the contract for the work because his bid was reasonable and he came to view the job on a poor weather day (none of the other contractors bidding the job showed up). I could not find reviews for Solid Rock Construction on-line and the coordinators for Empire Housing assured me that they had worked with Solid Rock before and that they did good work. The job was to sheetrock a hallway, mud and paint, baseboard and window trim. An access panel had to be built for exposed plumbing in one of the bedrooms. A hole in the ceiling needed to be repaired. Carpet was going in the bedrooms, hallway, stairs and the two rooms downstairs. Two entry doors needed replacing to seal air getting in. A recessed LED light was going into one of the bedroom closets. Cement board was being put in a bathroom shower area (to be later tiled by me). A couple of closet doors were put in in the bedrooms and a new door went on the bathroom (for doors- a total of 2 exterior and 4 interior). A shelved linen closet was to be built in an extra space in the hallway. The job total was 20K. I don't know where to begin honestly. This grant program was a nightmare and I feel that 20k could have gone a lot further if I had been able to choose the contractors independently. Can I complain because this was a grant awarded to me (free money basically)? Well, I normally wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but someone paid for this- taxpayers- and they shouldn't get fleeced. The quality of work was so poor at one point I had to stop the project and have the architect from Empire- the guy who drew up the job- come and assess the work. My biggest complaint- and it is still my biggest complaint- is how the exterior doors were installed. I can still see and feel where light and air are getting in. It is really not much better than what the doors were like before the project. There were also issues with materials. Wrong materials, excess materials were ordered. I don't know how that happens- I feel that something was going on- how do you end up with an extra door, 4 extra gallons of paint, a whole big unopened bucket of drywall mud....Sometimes they asked to borrow basic tools from me. The list goes on and on. I think that the way this grant program works, real contractors won't bid these jobs because Empire holds 10% until the project is done. Most legitimate and professional contractors require the $ upfront. They subcontracted the carpet out to Richmark in Syracuse, NY which is another review. I paid, or the grant paid 6k for around 1000 sq feet of carpet. I don't think that is a good deal, but maybe I am wrong about that. The floor was completely prepped for carpet and no furniture had to be moved. Richmark was lazy and beat too. I would have been better off going to home depot. I would NEVER rehire these contractors. I am writing this review so that if someone else is utilizing the Empire Housing grant program and they get a bid from Solid Rock, they can look at this review. I am open to responding to private messages concerning this contractor as well.

After I hired Ryan Painting and renovations, I was told his brother was going to do the work. Ed Ryan was working for his brother. Over a year later and multiple start dates, Ed Ryan refused to do the job and Charlie himself was going to do it. However, I was told I was out a $1000.00 for architect work that was never paid for and that was not apart of the contract I signed. Mr Ryan showed up on the job without and specs for how the awning was suppose to be built. Then when I gave him a copy, he insisted that there was more material and labor that was needed for the job and that it would cost me an additioanl $2100.00. He refuses to put anything in writing (via email) and when I texted him the conditions, we agreed to the additional increase, and he also agreed that no more payments would be exchanged until the job was complete. He responded and had his men get back to work. The next day (today 8/10/16) he called and asked for the additional increase upfront, meaning I would have paid him close to 60% of the job and the only thing they purchased was lumber. I thought I had hired a reputable company. I was wrong! Mr Ryan is charging me thousands of dollars for no work, no product and refuses to return the funds. He refuses to do anything via email and only by phone conversation. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
