As someone who truly loved little about Scotch, it was a wonderful way to taste and compare smoky vs peaty whiskeys. Fun. Our table was upstairs and we sat next to an open door which allows for fresh cool air. It was a warm day in Edinburgh. Our server was wonderful, patient and really helpful. Our choices were truly delicious. We started with the fish board, olives, and mushroom skewer. We loved them all. I enjoyed the cod main dish, while my wife finished the starters. The side of asparagus was also excellent. The mouse dessert was delicious but very rich, it's enough for 4 people. The cost of dinner was also totally reasonable. I recommend this place highly.

Great drinks and a killer location. We got a cheeseboard that was actually quite nice and large,…read morewhich we were very pleased with. The one weird thing -- we were unsure when we arrived how hungry we would be, and the menu is a bit limited. We decided to order just the cheese board and see where we were after that. We were told that once we placed an order, we would not be permitted to put in any more food due to a "small kitchen." I have never heard this rule worded in quite this way. I have been to places that prefer you place everything at once, but not that you would absolutely not be allowed to order more food if you found yourself hungry. We witnessed another table leave because of this rule. The server communicated this rule quite gruffly. The restaurant was also not very busy at all, so couldn't have been crowding concerns. I would definetly recommend for drinks and apps, but, for dinner, perhaps elsewhere.

The Lemon & Herb Baked Fish was so flavorful and juicy. I tried a Deep Fried Mars Bar for the first time and loved it (I don't know what it reminds me of, but it's crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and hot enough to burn the top of your mouth). The star was definitely the Breaded Haddock. I've had fish and chips around the UK for much cheaper, but at a slightly higher price point you get a perfectly crispy piece of fish with double-fried chips. It's really more about the experience of being in a posh fish shop. It's packed with tourists, so you'll be handed a map of the city at the end -- which I found to be pretty funny given I was living in Edinburgh at the time and came with another local. But it's charming and certainly worth a visit.

It's the oldest public house in Scotland and worth the journey outside Edinburgh to visit. The interior is warm, welcoming and friendly. It's quiet and relaxing. Perhaps the problem is that none of us ordered a roast, which is what they're known for. Personally, the cocktail I got was the best part; a rose and raspberry sort of spritz with vodka. Simple, light, and not sweet, it was perfectly refreshing. The vegan risotto was much less so. I deeply appreciate the ambition to put something unique and more elegant on the menu for plant-based eaters. It was certainly well plated. However, my favorite part was the three cubes of Violife feta on top, as the rest was tasteless. Rice dry enough to be pilaf, zero flavor, and about 5 woody ends of asparagus. I'm grateful that they removed it from the bill, as it was largely inedible. Again, I applaud and encourage the effort to add thoughtful options for people of all dietary needs! I'll assume I went on an off-day based on all the other glowing reviews.
