If you're in the middle of planning a trip to Killarney, you should know that at any time of the year, but particularly now, it's a pricey area! It's expensive to get there, eat out and to spend the night....but believe me, it's worth it for the spectacular mountain and lakeside location. And if you are doing your research on the best places to stay on a budget, then 3 Lakes Hostel will doubtless have popped up in your search engine. If you choose to stay here, be prepared for the following:
- As will most hostels in Ireland, a completely pathetic excuse for a breakfast. And really, take my word for it on that. I'm not even winging about the quality of food. I choose the word pathetic specifically because I really don't think that you can advertise "breakfast included" for a few loaves of the cheapest quality sliced bread, butter, literally 2-week old cereals in plastic containers, and watered down juice..and you pay for the coffee machine. It should be advertised as "there's some stuff in the kitchen!" Preemptively, I'm not having the whole "you get what you pay for....you winging prat. Stay in a more expensive place, then!!" argument that people throw around when anyone complains about the shortcomings of budget accommodation. There really isn't an excuse for laziness on the breakfast front in these kinds of places...Every other country I've been to does this better, and people from abroad who i speak to always complain about hostel breakfasts, even when they pay more. Very bad form.
-Only a good location if you're driving. If you are coming down by bus or train, stay somewhere closer to the city centre, otherwise you are up for a 2km walk to get there.
But other than those con's, it is good for the money you pay. It's clean and quiet. So, overall, i'd recommend it for a one night stay. read more
