    Muffler Connection

My 2012 SVT Raptor needed brakes and spark plugs. Muffler Connection was recommended to me by a…read morecouple people so I gave them a try. I was not disappointed. They got the job done incredibly quickly, were happy to let me supply my own parts (because I'm picky) and the price was very very good. They are my new go-to car repair folks.

I don't want to leave a one-star review because I'm conflicted. This guy was not rude, but at the…read moresame time a bit unprofessional. Let me explain. I just moved to the area and lost access to my trusted mechanic back in PA. Also, thanks to YouTube, I have fixed many things on my own, like a brake cable on my old truck, an oxygen sensor on another car, differential fluid, transfer case fluid, serpentine belt, rotor / brakes, and, of course, oil changes. Now I am in the process of replacing my AC compressor. Unfortunately, due to my move to IN, I was busy with all kinds of stuff around the house, moving in, etc. Our Toyota Camry was making loud muffler like sounds, and my wife was pushing me to fix it. I should have jacked up my car, put it on stands, and looked it up on YouTube but I relented. This guy's reviews were good, so I decided to trust whatever he said. Big mistake. He fixed the problem (he said it was a catalytic converter replacement), but then a month later, the problem returned. I brought the car back in, and he said he needed to replace the gasket. After the second fix I picked up my car. On the way home, I looked at my dashboard and noticed two warning icons were lit. I stopped and called the mechanic to tell him. He listened, and I said I would clear the codes with my scanner tool when I got home. I did, but the codes returned. I called the mechanic again to report the problem. He was polite, and we were friendly with each other. I essentially told him he was wrong, but instead of offering a fix, he made no offers. So I told him I would fix it myself. I resolved the "bank 1 sensor 1" problem with a new O2 sensor, and now everything is fixed. However, I am out several hours of work and the cost of the part. This guy charged me $798 (plus he kept my old catalytic converter, which I assume he was able to sell for a sizable profit) for a cheap part, and it seems like he used something like JB Weld muffler seal. He claimed it was the catalytic converter assembly. I cannot tell if he actually replaced it; the part itself is very cheap online. The pictures I took of the bottom of the car show rusted or brownish parts and seems to be nothing new except for a few bolts and JB Weld muffler substance. If he did, my guess is it was a refurbished unit or one that would not pass inspection for smog in other states?? If the part was refurbished or it was not good in other states he should have told me so I could decline. I am not an expert and am not claiming anything nefarious, but I do have bad memories of several shops cutting my old Nissan Sentra's CV joints when I was young and inexperienced. To keep my review balanced (hence 2 stars), the guy did replace my rusted gas heat shield for a fair price. That was good. Note to self: Always push for a detailed estimate. Looking online, this seems to be required by law (I am not an attorney and could be wrong). I should have not accepted a lightly written, carbon-copy bill that is almost impossible to understand. Always jack up your car and educate yourself. Learn the law online before forking out your hard earned cash.
