I contacted Jennifer about a pet and she called the foster family immediately. She seems very busy so from then on I communicated with the foster family. They have been wonderful and even checked in on him. The visit from the prior family helped put his mind at ease and he opened up to us after. we are happy with our experience. 1000x better than dealing with the shelter. read more

My Son in law and daughter found the perfect dog for them about 2 weeks ago. Being the grammie, I got to babysit her. I have a 13 yr old "special needs" dog and missed having a puppy around. I found Gia (now named Gidget) and after 5 days of thinking about her my hubby agrees to go see her. It was love at first sight. Kathy (foster mom) was wonderful about answering my questions and she is quickly settling into her new home. Of course she and Bonnie are having fun play dates! I contacted Jennifer from 2nd chances rescue after catching a small dog who was loose and running through traffic. No collar, no microchip, no owner came forward after posting everywhere. I have fostered before but was in way over my head without any way to cover vet costs or advertise and screen for potential adopters. Jennifer was so quick to help, got the little guy vet care and listed him through her rescue right away. She has been so kind and supportive. You can tell she really knows what she's doing and that she cares about both the dogs and adopters. This would be a long term and overdue review... We adopted our pittie from 2nd Chances back in August of 2013 and so far it has been a mostly good and sometimes frustrating experience. Mind you that we just started owning dogs because at that time my kids kept asking for a dog and I wanted to wait at least until the youngest kid was mature enough to be around pets. Jennifer at 2nd Chances was very pleasant and accommodating for us. On the day we picked up our dog, we met the foster and she was in tears saying goodbye- this I did not expect and noticed the rest of my family with welled up eyes, what a touching memory. After the adoption, Jennifer told me that our family was a good match for a dog which was reassuring. Adoption of an adult dog sounded to me the better way to go and I didn't want to deal with puppyhood issues. They named her Diamond because of the white patch on the back of her neck but after a month I decided to rename her Kona because we love Hawaii and Diamond to me sounded like an exotic dancer, let's not go there. The shelter found her as a stray and listed her in RescueMe.Org. I wish I could say that Kona was a turn key pet but unfortunately she had issues. She was not housebroken and was sometimes reactive to other dogs while on walks. It also appears that she was abused by her previous owners because she would freak out with young men in a certain ethnic group. However, in fairness the center never made any statements about these issues since they did not know other than she was submissive. It took about 2 years to rehabilitate/train her with lots of YouTube views on dog behaviors and training to figure things out. I even grew a goatee in honor of Cesar Milan for a while. Today things are going well, she's a sweetheart and my walking companion. We own two dogs, the other one is a white 15 lbs poodle mix named Max and it appears he's the boss Vs. my 55 lbs Kona. I call them my cross gender dogs because Max looks like a pretty 'she' and Kona is a just very muscular. Kona is the body guard for Max when they are let out for breaks against coyotes. It appears true what they say about pit bulls, they are nanny dogs because she loves my kids, a very affectionate dog - her tail never stops wagging. She's a grateful creature. This is my personal story of a beginners journey of dog ownership. Having a dog is almost like raising another kid, it takes time, knowledge, love, and patience. There were many times that I wanted to return Kona but things worked out. I admit that sometimes I like my dogs more than my kids because they mostly don't give me attitude, the key word is "mostly". Yes, dogs sometimes have bad days too but at least they don't cost me a set of braces and college. If your heart and personal situation allows, please adopt a dog. read more

Ok. I know that there are many "Unhappy" People with their experiences with certain individuals with 2nd chance rescue. But let me tell you something. These people spend THEIR OWN MONEY and LOTS of their personal time really taking care of these dogs. They have seen so many horrible things during rescue missions of abuse and neglect. They use their personal cars, their personal leashes and many unpaid volunteers to rescue these precious babies from hoarders, drug addicts and abusers. They have also dealt with people that give up on their dogs just simply because the dog is too big or too old which is ridiculous. These people are passionate and protective about the dogs they rescue. So please be understanding and patient. Another point. EVERY CENT you give as an adoption fee is for the dog you adopt (vaccinations & spay/neuter) and other dogs that need medical attention, food etc! They don't pocket the money. I have adopted my boy Whiskey (Rhino) from a wonderful woman Kathy. She takes in all kinds of rescues and spends HER OWN MONEY in her OWN HOME and takes care of them on her OWN TIME! These babies she rescues are so blessed to have her. Jen, the "owner" of 2nd chance rescue is passionate about finding the right home for her dogs. Sometimes she comes across, as people describe, rude. But it's because she cares. So before you get frustrated or quick to anger, think about what it takes to actually save thousands of dogs, care for them, feed them, take them to the vet, and find them homes! So I don't give 5 stars because I just don't. I read the poor reviews prior to calling and went with 2nd Chances anyway and I will go back and I will recommend 100%. (a) I wanted a small dog and she had over 8 at the time; (b) I was drawn to a particular dog and went to the picture over and over which is how I found my first dog; (c) She picked up when I called. Many of us found out that finding a dog during COVID was impossible. It's a difficult emotional journey. Now - - I read the reviews and called anyway because I am in an emotional business where people do not want to hear what I have to say. So I took the reviews with a grain of salt. I know how it feels to tell someone what they don't want to hear only to have them yell at me. So I remained open minded. It happens regularly and I'm never used to it but I'm always getting more and more used to it. Having found out that COVID makes adopting impossible plus filling out all these ridiculous applications where you don't even get a response -- well - I feel that many people project their emotions onto the rescue, rather than just be frustrated. I have no idea what these people went through but what Jennifer does is amazing. Driving all over this huge city / counties to rescue, foster, adopt, drop, pick up, retrieve when situations do not work out. This is a different way to adopt than say 20-30 years ago. We went to a shelter and saw dogs and grabbed our favorite! And when you have to fill out app after app from different rescues with rejection after rejection b/c the dog had 100 apps -- well it gets frustrating. Anyway, Jennifer was responsive and blunt. Not rude at all in anyway. And completely on point with her descriptions of both dogs. I got two fantastic dogs and for various reasons decided to give them up almost immediately. Due to personal emotional circumstances. I was embarrassed and horrified but I had to do "the right thing." She was understanding and had time to chat. She went out of her way to retrieve the dogs and arrange for their relocation. When the time came to relinquish the second dog -- which was the original dog I wanted -- I could not do it. I just couldn't. I was on an emotional rollercoaster but realized how much work I had put in to find the perfect dog and I did it and didn't know it. I did not want to make her look bad (Jennifer) and was horrified to cancel but I canceled the pick up from a third party. Jennifer was fully understanding and I did not make her look bad. Even the third party said "we understand, that dog is a sweetie" - they were VERY understanding. It was a rollercoaster created by me ;-) I have no regrets. I LOVE my pupsters. I have two precious people dying in my life and that is what made this such a rollercoaster. Jennifer was understanding and sure -- some of the questions can be intrusive and annoying but that's from ALL RESCUES. I believe a lot of them work on a shoe string and I have donated and wish to donate more. They are protecting dogs at a level we have never seen. I try to look at the big picture and we-- as a society -- should be ashamed of the level of kill in america for dogs. It is shameful and reflects on us as a society. Anyone driving all over LA / Riverside / everywhere trying to save these animals should be given a bit of slack. So I will adopt again from 2nd Chances. I have referred several people to this rescue and we should try to do what they do for one day before being so harsh. These precious animals mean a lot to us but navigating adoption is not always easy. I am happy to have my Charlotte when I was literally 50 minutes from giving her up. She was feral and in three short months has made RIDICULOUS IMPROVEMENTS! NOT THE SAME DOG. Can't WAIT to get her a companion from 2nd Chances Rescue. read more

Our family has been looking for a rescue dog since my beloved George passed away. It's not easy seeing all the dogs in need and applying and missing out on a dog. Going the rescue route takes time and commitment. Especially when it's so easy to jump on Craig's List and buy a puppy or go to a breeder. Believe me, I was tempted after missing out on a few dogs through different rescues and shelters. I diligently checked 2nd Chance's website for a dog for months. My husband is allergic to some breeds. We didn't want a puppy but a dog 1 year or older. Then there she was! Our Daisy! She was perfect! I submitted my application and the rescue responded right away. They were very responsive and accommodating. They lead me through the process and within one week she was ours! We got our two fur babies from Second Chances Rescue. If you want to have a dog make sure to adopt and not buy. We got our 1st rescue dog last Sept. 2018. Fast forward, we got our 2nd rescue dog last month September 2020 after 2 years. To adopt a dog is like having a new baby. You have to potty train & be really, really patient as the dog will be making a mess plus it is expensive since you have to buy supplies & pay for check ups & health care such as immunizations. I have always been a dog lover so I know what it's like & was prepared for it & waited for my 2 girls to be responsible enough to help taking care of the dog. For our 1st dog, Lucky, it was quick since his previous adopter gave him up since he was allergic to him. But for our 2nd rescue dog, Oreo, it took almost a year to find since after the pandemic, it felt like everybody wanted to adopt a dog. Big thanks to Tina from 2nd Chances Rescue who patiently helped me to find the right puppy since I am sensitive & needed a hypo allergenic dog. I want to give this rescue 5 stars for Tina. Big thanks to her we got our 2nd fur baby. 5 Stars also to 2nd Chances Rescue. They rescue animals, help find homes for them & they are volunteers. God bless their hearts. Before the pandemic I always make it a point to donate items for the 2nd Chances Thrift Store so in a way it also help save other animals. We experienced, straight forward, busy, companionate professionals in Jennifer, Monica and the foster mommies we spoke to. We are amazed by Jennifer's desire to ensure a great home for each of the dogs she rescues; she drove about 100 miles to meet my husband and me and to do a home check. The foster mom welcomed my family into her home the same day as our home-check and allowed us to stay and find the right pup for our family. We are very happy with this rescue, who's number one focus is the dogs. We are in love with our new puppy (of whom's entire litter was rescued from the desert, vaccinated, fostered, and socialized). Several years ago I found a dying dog at the Carson shelter. A pocket Pit whose kennel cough had turned into pneumonia. She only had about 3 days before it was too late. The vet at the shelter who is now gone was hateful and because the dog had been abused and used for backyard breeding she has a lot of pain in her spine, hips and knees and will snap if mounted so at the last minute the vet put her on rescue only status. I frantically called every rescue in Los Angeles I could find no one would help. By accident I got Jennifer out in Riverside. No questions asked she drove out on a Sunday (her day off) and pulled the dog saying "here's your dog" after checking my home and me out. I'm her biggest fan. She gets hundreds of emails and phone calls a week. How dare people who do nothing to help animals criticize her. She has to be blunt and strong to do this heartbreaking job but make no mistake, she cares deeply. How about you donate some money and time to her amazing group (any idea how many thousands of dollars they spend on medical rehabilitation?) instead of writing an unkind review because she didn't return your call that day. Just dropped off my 2month old, beautiful beloved white Doberman Storm. Devastated that I could not afford the costly vet bills for her health problems...her hernia and worm infestation was just too much for me to handle. I dropped off my pup sobbing in tears but I take comfort in knowing that she is in good hands. Jennifer was upfront, honest and very reassuring. What an ordeal!! From the reviews below, it looks like others have experienced what I did. Here is what happen: We had dogs for 17 years and they passed away. Our two girls have been wanting a dog. I wanted a cheapy Craigslist dog, but my wife wanted to give back and adopt one. So by chance, 2nd Chance was having adaption day at Petco in Eastvale when we drove by. We stopped by and we liked one dog. We filled out the application and we got talked to by a 2nd Chance rep, which told us it will be $300 for dog, fees, neutering, and microchip. I thought it was weird they wanted to see our house first, but we agreed. Made arrangements for their rep to come to our house in 1-2 hrs. She texted me at 3:16 asking if I was home. I said yes and expected her to show up in a few minutes. She calls me again at 3:28 telling me that she relooked at application and that she was concerned that I did not have a dog. I told her Yes, I do not have a dog, hence the adoption. That our plan was to get another dog later, but one right now. I thought that was weird again, after we made all arrangements...And this is what pursued after!! I get a text from the 2nd Change rep about 50mins later telling me, and I quote "I'm really concern about dog being an only dog. He truly needs another dog. If we can work on finding him a friend, I would be more comfortable adopting him to you". WHAT!! I wrote back "So you want me to spend more $$ on another dog?". I than pretty much explained again that we want to ease into two dogs, not two at once, to eliminated being overwhelmed. I told them that if they found another family they think is better than my family, just say it, instead of getting my two kids all sad that they might not get the dog. She wrote back saying, and I can't believe the quote, "It has nothing to do with your family, it has everything to do with the dog and he loves other dogs very much." Than she went on telling me they wanted me to foster another dog because they didn't want the dog we selected to be alone and if that didn't work for me, she was sorry. She than said "I'm not here to judge people. I"m here to make sure that the dog gets the right home and he would be unhappy alone". I was than flabbergasted and was like, WTF is going on here!! I wrote back to her saying that I believe that a good loving family makes dog's lives good, regardless of one or two dogs. At the end, we told them to go suck a nut and that we were not interested anymore after about an hour and a half of going back and forth in texts and judging us as a good family for this dog. They than should no signs of empathy never responding back to my text. They totally blew me off. Jesus...it was like I was adopting a human child. It's a dog in a shelter that needs a home. We wanted to give it a home. When we were there, we told them we didn't have a dog and they made my wife hold, hug, pet, and walk around with the dog. We both agreed it would be a good indoor dog for our kids, but at the end, these people gave us the run around, and we had to see the look of sad eyes in our kids that we did not get the dog. So unprofessional and no signs of empathy for our family. Will never go back and I will tell everyone I know to avoid this place like the plague..... read more

Our family is so happy we were able to give a forever home to our newest family member thanks to 2nd Chances Rescue. We had been looking to adopt a dog and seeing institutionalized dogs with permanent homes at our local no-kill shelter was heartbreaking, so knowing we helped keep our dog out of a shelter system and seeing the work 2nd Chances does in taking dogs from neglected or dangerous situations is so rewarding. When we 1st contacted 2nd Chances we received a call from Jennifer who then introduced us to the Foster who had the puppies at her home. Apparently there are a few Fosters who volunteer for 2nd Chances, some have older dogs and Kathy takes the puppies. We scheduled a visit with Kathy to meet the puppies and spent a good part of the afternoon getting to know the dogs available for adoption and each other. It was a lovely way for 2nd Chances to know what kind of home their foster pup would be going to and for us to learn something about the dogs in their care and what their history was. Once we knew which puppy was best for our family we arranged for Jenn to do a home visit to confirm the adoption. We were a family of 4 by the end of the day! Kathy is the sweetest foster mom a pup could ask for, with lots of love and good doggie care all around. Jenn is concerned for the future welfare of all their dogs and is committed to vetting adoption families but is very easy to talk to and efficient at getting our application and adoption finalized without hassle. 2nd Chances provides a great service to dogs and humans in bring families together. read more

I just read some of the reviews on here and wanted to comment. We moved to the area and wanted to adopt. I remember being a little unsure about this rescue when we were first trying to communicate with them, but my advice to anyone having a hard time with either getting a response or feeling challenged by the initial stages of their adoption is to remember that (1) they are a rescue, and probably understaffed, and (2) they are definitely more concerned about the animals than your opinion. Which is how it should be! Once we got past the initial hurdles we found the perfect dog for our family, adopted him with his brother (we couldn't leave him behind!) and because we have so much room over the past year have adopted a third dog from this rescue. I respect 2nd Chances Rescue immensely and am so happy that they are taking care of these dogs! It's very easy to give them a five star review. They are the best kind of people. read more

The phone operator "Jennifer" who claims to be the owner of the organization is very unprofessional. Tone of voice was not pleasant and rude remarks were uncalled for. I advised her that I am in the military and tried to help take care of dogs that were going to taken to the shelter anyways, but due to the job, I was unable to help in this situation. Just tried to due a good thing. The response I received from this owner was "I thought they trained you guys to be responsible" (referring to military personnel of course). When I asked her for her name, she asked "why?" Had to ask her for her name several times. Before she can give me her name, she asked me for my name. Immaturity is clearly there for this owner. If the owner is so stressed with her job, or doesn't like it, they shouldn't have signed up for it in the first place. Or at least quit. I don't go to war and start being rude to everyone for it. There are pros and cons in the organization you chose to work in. read more

I recently became a foster for this organization. I'm caring for a great dog that barely survived a form of canine hepatitis. He was so seriously ill other rescues may not have even tried to save him but Jennifer at 2nd chances did! My eyes have been opened to a lot that goes on in dealing with people who can't or won't make the kind of commitment and choice being a dog owner requires. This group and all of the volunteers involved work very hard to provide all that's needed to rescue and rehome dogs. This is a very rewarding experience and I've been treated well by all I've encountered. read more

If I could give her no stars I would. I called asking for help because I couldn't keep my pet any longer. I had a breakdown when talking to her and it just felt like she wouldn't take no for an answer. I desperately needed someone to take in my dog ASAP and then solutions she "offered" were not the type of help I needed at the time. I explained to her that I needed to find a job, that I was moving, and that the place I was moving to did not allow pets. She insisted I should have my pet registered as an emotional support animal and also gave me information to a woman who could have helped with my job however, she just wasn't not understanding that I couldn't keep my pet and she was trying to make me keep him when the choice to let him go was already extremely difficult to make. People try to adopt a dog and this place is giving the runaround. They had questions but never called. No home check was ever done. Not sure why they would tell someone one thing and then make excuses. I thought this was a 2nd chance rescue but they seem to not want to place dogs in a loving safe home. Jennifer has lack of communication and full of excuses. If the situation changes I will revise but so far, not an adoption foundation I would personally go to in the future for myself nor recommend. I started working with 2nd chances about 3 years ago. They take exceptional care of the dogs in their facility and for years post adoption. From clean kennels, enrichment activities for mental and physical stimulation, play time, high quality foods and treats, and training. Far more than many other large dog or bully specific rescues I have encountered. No dog is deprived of veterinary care I'm talking NONE OF THEM and each dog is loved until it finds its forever home.
