Don't expect top notch Japanese food here. With that aside, Watami is located inside the Man Yee Building in Central. The reception is a numbering system, so when your table is ready they will come and get you. The lunch menu felt like it was 50 pages long since it seemed so extensive, but in reality there wasn't a lot to choose. I had the assorted sushi and soba set for $98, since I wanted something cool as I was still adjusting to the Hong Kong heat. Both the sushi and soba were okay. The images in the menu were exactly the sushi pieces you're gonna get, so no surprises there. Again it's casual dining, so don't set your standards too high for this place. Service was poor. A few times we asked for water, but no server ever returned water to us for the first bit of our stay. It was also hard to get someone's attention due to how the restaurant was set up. I likely won't recommend this place since there's better places out there, but I've definitely had worse out there.

My husband were in Hong Kong City checking out the outlet situation (ISA Outlet specifically) when…read morewe decided we were too far from home to make dinner ourselves and so we would just grab something close before we hopped on the MTR and headed home. Looking on Yelp for "sushi," we found Fukumura in the same shopping structure and although it did not have any reviews, we thought we would go. SO GLAD WE DID! My husband eats sushi and I eat sashimi as a general rule. In both situations, we agreed that this meal was fantastic! Not just kind of fantastic, but "holy crap this fish is so fresh I should slap it" kind of fantastic. The sashimi scallops and sweet shrimp were so delicate and sweet and simple perfection. The tuna, the flounder and the salmon were equally perfect and cut in large fat sizes. We sat at the actual sushi bar and were able to see all the cool rolls and items that the sushi chefs were preparing. Quite the art amongst this group of sushi chefs! We ordered veggie tempura and a bottle of cold sake. Cold sake was presented in a cool serving vessel and kept pefectly chilled until the last drop. The staff was so accomodating and on it at the completion of a dish, refilling of tea or reorder of more sushi. A lot of staff, regularly available, welcoming and helpful, genuinely glad that we were there and happy for our business. The restaurant is not large, seating only 50. It does have a small sushi bar that sits about 10 and also a teppanyaki bar that sits about 10 too. Then there is the small dining room and also appeared to have a private back room of some sort. The low ceilings and the llight wooded walls make the place have a warm feel, but there is no sitting on the ground or anything here in some traditional Japanese spots. This is not a bustling area at 6PM on a Sunday, very dead really. We think this place and the restaurants all around it must have a busy work crowd during mid week lunches and such, for again it was dead when we showed up. The whole plaza around Fukumura appeared dead. But don't let this fool you, this restaurant was great and we would defiinately go back. It is expensive, so be warned. We walked out with a bill around $2200HKD for just the two of us, but you get what you pay for. They do have a $600HKD sashimi sampler that included tuna, salmon, shrimp, scallop, toro and something else. We tend to over indulge when it comes to sushi, so our bill can get out of hand. So if you are not getting out of hand, neither will your bill.

Thinking back to this restaurant is making me emotional for some reason. I have nostalgia for a place that I won't be able to go back to for a while. I always am a fiend for goose on rice because of how difficult it is to find outside of Hong Kong, especially in the U.S. I also ordered an almond drink because of my sweet tooth and need for warm beverages that are also hard to find outside of Hong Kong. The interior of the restaurant is thoughtfully decorated and is also very clean and open. In our most recent visit, we came for lunch. Reservations are highly suggested since this restaurant is in the financial district and is often packed for lunch. To start, the green tea is complimentary and they consistently refill your cup. For food, we started with a salmon sashimi, avocado and softshell crab roll and uni roll to share. The salmon sashimi was served on a bed of ice, which was a nice touch to the presentation. It was really fresh and fatty, almost melting in my mouth. The avocado and softshell crab roll was also delicious. It's crispy and flavorful and I like that there's more filling than rice. The uni roll was unexpectedly disappointing, however. It was not fresh at all and the portion was really small for its price. For our mains, I got an eel rice. I felt that this dish was well executed because the eel sauce tasted delicious but it wasn't over powering. I can definitely still taste the eel, which was fresh, flavorful and succulent. We also got two lunch sets, the assorted tempura set and the beef udon set. These individually come with different items as part of the set lunch, such as miso soup, and/or sashimi and California roll. Overall, a solid place for quality Japanese food. Other than the uni roll, there are no complaints! The service and quality has been pretty consistent over the years, so I'll be coming back whenever I visit Hong Kong!

You ever get that feeling when you walk past a place and you're like "Whoa! I can't afford this!"…read more Kikusan is like that. First of all, it's in one of the most expensive malls in one of the most expensive districts in one of the most expensive places in the world (Landmark, Central, Hong Kong). Secondly, it's an amalgamation of some of the more pricey cuisines: Japanese and Tapas, or trendily known as Japas. Thirdly, it looks like a contemporary art museum. But, never would I have imagined that here, I can not only have an affordable meal, but get one of the best valued dishes I've ever had! The signature Kikusan roll: 8 pieces of tuna filled sushi roll, topped with a whole slab of uni, green onions, and lots of salmon roe. All of my favourite things in a generous quantity for HKD $68. According to today's exchange rate, that's CAD $10.94. You usually get 8 pieces of California roll at that price (Kikusan's California Roll is actually $88). The same amount of uni at a supermarket easily costs 2-3x as much. The roll itself is mild, but still flavourful. There aren't any crazy flavour bursts, but it all works together well. The uni didn't have as much uni flavour as I would've liked but hey...$68. Really. The green onions added sharpness to cut through the smooth tuna and the little exploding roe provided bursts of sweetness. The Kikusan Roll was all about balance. By contrast, the Chili Sesame & Peanut Soup Ramen with Minced Pork and Layered Pork Cutlet was very in-your-face flavour-wise, and delicious in a whole other way! The pork cutlet had a hint of sake and the spice was at a perfect level of heat. My theory is that the Kikusan Roll is one of those loss leader things because it definitely drew me to this restaurant. The strategy seems to be working well. At 12:10pm, the queue was making an S in front of the entrance. Everyone was ordering things that range from sushi to dim sum in this Asian fusion restaurant, with dishes on average ranging from $60 to well above $100. It's much easier to get in as a group of 2, so my advice would be to split up your big group if you don't mind sitting apart. They've also got a dim sum takeout counter for those not willing to battle the line. Would you come to Kikusan for the best Japanese food? No, not even close. But it's where you go when you want to impress your out-of-town, non-Japanese friends. It's where you go when you want to feel a little fancier without spending the kind of dollars you usually spend at Landmark. And most importantly, this is where you go if you want LOTS of uni for $68. (69/100) - 2017
