Steak and Cheese Sandwich
Erin S.

My husband and I have been meaning to stop by 290 Maine as we heard nothing but amazing things about it from our friends and family. The service was excellent, and our lunch was amazing. The steak sandwich with curly fries was a very generous portion. My husband got the breakfast burger which had a perfectly cooked runny egg on top.

"Buffalo chicken rangoons"

Always come here. Local. Order the buffalo chicken rangoons tonight. No buffalo. No chicken. Just cream?? I think? Maybe crab? I'm not sure. I called to ask and clarify, the lady was pretty stern and ended the conversation in an odd way... she says it is a buffalo chicken dip.... Where's the buffalo? Where the chicken?? You tell me? Working in the restaurant business for over 8 years and I would not have turned down a customer saying that an item is not what they listed it as. Not to mention my steak and cheese has mushrooms all through it. Glad I'm not allergic thanks. Do better 290.

Recommended. Highly recommended. Yummy. So friendly the service. Lovely brick walls. The right kind of lighting and great beers on tap. And they let you taste it if you're not sure. Wow.

Six happy patrons tonight. Typical casual Maine vibe, with dining options inside and picnic tables and patio seating outside. The menu is pretty extensive, with mostly bar appetizers, burgers, and sandwiches, but also some surprising entrees. Service was friendly and attentive, with lemonade and Arnold Palmer's promptly refilled, and a small but nice assortment of local beers on draft. Burgers offered with a lot of toppings, including tasty tender pulled pork, and several fries, including hand cut, thinner rosemary seasoned fries, crinkle sweet potato fries, tater tots, etc. The triple decker club was done just right. Nicely buttered toasty bread, with tender turkey and ham, and enough mayo and bacon to stand up to the three slices of bread. It's a very filling meal. The wait time for our food did seem a little long, but our server proactively kept us apprised of the status. This is a region with few fine dining or ethnic restaurants, but this casual pub stands out from others with similar offerings. We'll be back.

Service was excellent. Ordered the crab Rangoon dip for an appetizer, it was tasty and very generous size! Ordered a chicken club sandwich and it was also good! Definitely recommend going if you're in town.

On road trip that took us through Maine and thankful to find some good food along the way. Saw a few reviews very positive and took our chance. Lucked into some good food, nice vibe and great service - thank you Lauren. Had the fish and chips which were light and crispy and the lobster roll (mkt price $22) which was fresh and accompanied by some amazing fries. Sorry we're just passing through because this place is worth another visit.

Pretzel appetizer with beer cheese- so good. Crunchy outside with a warm soft inside

Never have I finished a meal and had an urge to thank the cook/chef. Well it happened today. Our usual stop in Norway closed about a month ago so we checked Yelp and and came across 290 Maine St. we have driven by every weekend leaving our camp but have never stopped. That will change. Clean, nicely appointed, lots of things to look at and think about hanging or written on the walls. The door which is surprising to me swings in versus the expected and I think required swing out. I'm sure it's grandfathered due to the building age. Not handicap accessible from front door as you have two steps to make. Bathrooms were clean and spacious (only one person at a time though). They have high top tables and low tables along with a bar along the back. There is an outdoor seating area which looked super cute but it was too cold for us today. Service was incredible, friendly attentive but also left us alone enough to enjoy our own company. Noise level was a bit higher but it's part of the charm. There was one woman that had a high pitched piercing laugh that was getting louder as she enjoyed her cocktails. Husband ordered a vodka drink that came in a pail and he loved it. Absolutely loved it. I had soda and my son chose lemonade which he really liked. We ordered the pretzel appetizer and it was fantastic. It came with beer cheese and that was also great. My husband ordered a Reuben and said it was one of his favorites he has had. Fries appeared to be freshly made and were solid fries. I had chicken fingers and it's clear they are homemade and all white meat. They were battered perfectly and were not dry at all. I ordered rings for my side and those were exceptional (also prepared in house). My son ordered a Cuban and ate it in its entirety. He said it was outstanding. Due to reviews I wanted to try the Big Mamma cookie sundae. OMG. The cookie was massive. I was afraid it would not be cooked through due to the thickness and I was so wrong. The cookies are some of the best I have ever had. Per our server the owners mom makes these cookies each week. Hands down they should sell them to go. I can't say enough of how fantastic this experience was. I absolutely cannot wait to try them again.

Big fan of this place! They have a sports bar pub type of atmosphere and they haven't disappointed with the food service or drinks! Spensor at the bar is super kind and calm while being swamped with orders! I highly recommend getting the fried pickles and Philly cheesesteak sandwich!! I cleaned my plate!

Great food, service and ambience. Live music on the weekends makes for a nice place for dinner and drinks.

My family…read moreand I decided to eat out to celebrate making it through Maine winter and general struggles. Our first two picks for restaurants were unexpectedly closed. We had a hungry toddler in the car who had just started repeating "I eat" so we decided to try this place despite the reviews. The parking lot had cars which we saw as a good sign. We entered with a "How bad could it be?"attitude. The front door opened into a dark foyer. There were no signs of life in the visible area but we could hear people in an adjoining room. We stood there for a minute or two deciding what to do when we were approached by the most beautiful chonky grey and white pitbull. He seemed like a goodest boi and he came to say hello to all of us and let out some barks as greeting. We peaked around the corner into the bar and saw several people sitting around. They all turned to stare directly at us. It felt like breaking into someone's double wide when they had company. The old men at the bar drilled us with stagnant gazes and the women smirked knowingly. Chills ran down my back as my husband went to asked if they were serving dinner. We were told to seat ourselves in the dining room. We entered the dark and empty dining room. We stepped carefully past the boat, an arrangement of children's toys and clutter nestled between the tables and chairs. The only light came from the windows to the back and the kitchen and dining room remained dark. We chose a booth that seemed to be "the best" and we slid past the ripped and jagged naugahyde lining the bench. "Can you get tetanus from a restaurant?" I wondered as plastic grabbed denim and skin. Big Doggo was the only one to accompany us into the room. He continued to be nice but sidled right up into the seating area with the family. When one of us almost stepped on him we started thinking about what it would take for him to not be nice anymore when in striking range of limbs and faces. After several minutes a woman walked by and said with an irritated tone "We'll be with you in a while" and absentmindedly clicked on some lights. I glanced around to the nervous faces of my family and we collectively decided to leave. We looked for the server to apologize but there was again only silence surrounding us. Stephen King, if you are reading this please use this spot in a future story, it's definitely cursed. I have no idea how the food was, could have been amazing - I am unsure.

TLDR: Linden + Front does neighborhood new American better than anyone else in the midcoast…read more L + F is easily the best restaurant in city and they consistently knock it out of the park on all fronts. The staff are some of the kindest, most accommodating people in the business--the bartenders in particular are always willing to work with you to find exactly the cocktail you're in the mood for. The food is fresh and local. In particular the partnership with Bath's local butcher shines through in their meats, but there are plenty of options for vegetarians as well. They're also one of the only restaurants around where I feel confident I can bring my partner who has celiac. He's eaten here multiple times and the staff have always been understanding and able to accommodate him. The atmosphere strikes a lovely balance that feels sophisticated enough for an event or special occasion, but just as welcoming if you want to sit at the bar after work and have a French onion burger and drink.

I did a similar meal at street & co as I did scales - oysters and scallops. I enjoyed the scallops slightly better at scales but this was still a win. And the octopus! Don't be afraid of that order, it was outstanding. We also sampled desserts and I was blown away. I wish I could go back more often, another phenomenal meal in Portland.

What an amazing dinner! Everything was perfect from start to finish…read more The space is beautiful. It's down a cobblestone alleyway, and the interior is cozy and rustic. It feels like a secret, but I know it's not a well kept one! Our server Nico (apologies if I've misspelled that!) was wonderful. He was friendly and helpful when we made our dinner choices. The other servers were also always on top of keeping our table clear and our water filled. The food was absolute perfection. We started with a salad and grilled octopus. The salad was bright and acidic which paired perfectly with the best octopus dish I've had. It was so tender and delicious, I've never had octopus that was that tender. The grilled flavor came through immediately, but never overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the octopus. For mains I had sole francaise and my husband had bone in monkfish. The sole was melt in your mouth good. It was lightly breaded and cooked in a pan with brown butter. It was so toasty and nutty and coated the green beans and simple, but perfect, red potatoes it was served with. My husband's monkfish was fresh and perfectly toothsome, served with fluffy Roman gnocchi and romesco sauce. My only regret is not having enough room for dessert because I'm sure it's incredible as well! I can't wait to return the next time we're in Portland. Just to note: this is one of the least accessibility-friendly areas of the city. The old cobblestone road that it's located on is foot traffic only. The closest approach is if you're dropped off at the end of and it you would still have a short distance to travel. There is a brick footpath on the sides of the cobblestone road that is slightly smoother, but still not ideal. Earlier in the day I was able to navigate the street okay on foot so it will depend on your capabilities. That being said, I took my motorized travel chair down there in the evening and Street and co were happy to let me fold it up and store it near the door.
