The problem was a bit of a mystery, after Ray had tried all the basic stuff (fuel pump, relays, etc) and took a lot of work to resolve. Ray showed up very quickly, brought parts, tried some stuff, bought a few more parts, tried a few more things and... after some more parts-buying and stuff-trying (keeping us in the loop the entire time about why he was doing this or that thing and giving us the option to not keep going) he was able to fix the problem, explain what he fixed in simple terms, and give us "things to look out for" as my partner drove home. He made it home with no issues! Ray's prices were super reasonable considering he was doing the work on a Sunday afternoon in the road in front of my house. He was tenacious about getting to the bottom of things and his knowledge of cars is encyclopedic. Apparently only a "walk around" estimate is free of charge. If they open the hood and actually look at the engine, there is a $150 charge. Seriously? One way to overcharge customers is by working on two cars simultaneously and charging each customer individually. Another is to round up labor charges at the margins. The dealer charges a 4% credit card fee and $100/hour for labor. But as the above examples illustrate, my concern is not about the de jure hourly rate, just the basis on which they were applied. If you're not price sensitive--and this is the only auto dealer that I believe is currently operating in Jeffersonville--I would not hesitate to recommend this dealer even if you are an easy mark. As for the recently closed other auto repair shop in Jeffersonville, my family used him for many years and never had such an experience.
