There are two major facets of the market: a food counter and a small grocery store that specializes in Mexican/Guatemalan goods. There were some fresh items, like produce, vegetables, and cheese, but most of the stock is shelf-stable. LOTS of ingredients. I'm from California, so the vibe reminded me a lot of home, though the Guatemalan items were new and cool. Like, the frozen tamales weren't wrapped by corn husks, but with banana leaves. We were there to order food to go. Tip: it's probably best to order by phone or online, because they do make everything fresh. We had about a 30 minute wait, which was okay, because it gave us a good chance to study the grocery store. The food is well worth the wait, too. We ordered birria tacos and a birria pizza. Like I said, I'm from California, and then my husband is from New Mexico. We have had... mixed experiences in getting authentic, flavorful Mexican food in Minnesota. This stuff? Legit. Generous fillings, lots of flavor. I'm sensitive to hot spices and this was at a perfect level for me--hot to my judgment, but the kind of pleasant hot that washes away when I have some water. The tears I experienced were from sheer nostalgia is getting delicious food that reminds me of home. We will absolutely be getting food from here again!

It's worth it to know what is good and what is just, meh ok…read more Been though here a handful of times, always order something different. The menu is like 6 pages long, consistent with other Mexican joints there's endless combinations. Fajitas kind of greasy and I'm not a fan of the mushrooms and zucchini in the mix. Enchiladas are saucy, just too much sauce. Not my favorite. Puff taco really good, seems more fresh, has good combination of flavors. I've had Burrito supreme and Burrito California, both have been my favorite items. They are big, it will fill up larger appetites for sure.

The chips were old and not fresh (chewy, not crisp) and the salsa tasted like bottled taco sauce, it was not appetizing at all. My burrito was tasteless, we sat in a booth that has been taped up and obviously needs to be replaced. My friends taco salad was taste-less, ground beef had no taste either. The service was meh--our waitress (fake eyelashes) was so rude (I have had her before and she is never nice, and always acts like she is being asked too much when I asked for a refill.). She could be the owner, but she needs a class on being kind to customers. Figure it out, girl! One another thing, the windows were full of flies buzzing around our booth, it was gross. I do not know what you do with that, but figure it out, gross! We will not be back~

El Tequila is one of my most favorite places to eat- authentic Mexican food. It's about 45 minutes…read morefrom the cities, would I drive there to just eat there? Probably not, but if I happened to be in the area, I would definitely make my way there, even for take out. The exterior is a dated orange building sitting on the side of Lyndale Ave amongst unkept tall grass, a little dilapidated but don't let that turn you away. Once inside you're greeted by familiar faces of the family that keeps the operation going, the smell of freshly cook tortilla chips and more orange walls reminiscent of a Hacienda, decorated with traditional art and pottery. Once sat, complimentary chips and salsa are bought to the table. Pro-tip: ask for seconds. The salsa is made in house, a liquid salsa consistency married together with chunks of onions, cilantro and tomatoes creating this robust umami flavor of goodness! I have drank the salsa before, it's okay. On to the rest of the food, I highly recommend the Molcajete and Burrito de Asada. The Molcajete is for someone who can't decide on their protein (so why not, have it all?); it is a mix of chicken, beef, pork and shrimp comes out sizzling hot in a Molcajete served with rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream and tortilla. It's essentially a DIY burrito/taco/wrap- what could go wrong? Burrito de Asada is also served with rice, lettuce, salsa and sour cream; pro-trip: ask to "spice it up" for an extra kick or on the side if unsure about spicy levels. The Faribault location is the better location so I've heard from those in the area. Highly recommend if you're in the area. Photo cr. to parents- I'm always busy eating chips and salsa.
