My girlfriend and I stopped by 220 Café for a late lunch to celebrate her passing an important exam. I had read previous reviews mentioning potential racist behavior from the hostess, so I was a little on edge since my girlfriend is Puerto Rican. Thankfully, we didn't experience anything like that-- we were seated promptly and given menus right away. My girlfriend ordered a Berry Mojito, which she enjoyed, while I stuck with water. I went with the Black-N-Bleu Burger, and honestly, it was fantastic--easily the highlight of the meal. My side of cauliflower mash was decent, not amazing but acceptable. My girlfriend's steak wrap, however, didn't hit the mark. It looked sloppily assembled and didn't have much flavor. Her mac and cheese had a nice cheesy top layer, but everything underneath was pretty bland. So while I really enjoyed my meal, she didn't enjoy hers at all, which made the overall experience feel pretty uneven. Service also played a part in the rating. Our waitress wasn't very friendly and came across as standoffish or even slightly rude. I overheard her telling another table she'd worked there for over 10 years, so maybe it was just an off day--but it still affected the vibe. Overall, a mixed experience. My burger alone was five-star worthy, but the rest of the food and the service were memorable for the wrong reasons--hence the three stars. read more

While here for lunch we tried the 220 chicken sandwich with the mac & cheese as well. It was good and seemed fresh and delicious. I got the buffalo chicken wrap and was very fresh and delicious, only minor concern was it was wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla and it seemed a little dry as it was falling apart. I also got the mac & cheese. This was the real winner here. It was fresh and included sautéed onions which put it over the top. The waitress seemed nice but was only one there for whole restaurant and seemed a little stressed. The food was good, but was a little on the pricy side. I haven't been here in years, and I was super happy to come back because I still remember how delicious my food was on the first visit! We came around 3, so we were pretty much the only ones there and the staff were super attentive and friendly. I'm unfortunately not giving 5 stars because there was a piece of bone in my steak wrap, and it was really alarming at first. I thought I was going to break a tooth. The second reason is that my French fries had virtually no flavor, and were all cut to varying thickness, some of them being almost too thick to enjoy because it was just a mouthful of bland potato. I ended up using a lot of the pepper and salt on the table, and it helped, but they still lacked crispiness that I'd hoped for. My steak had great flavor though and the wrap itself was very good (save for the piece of bone), I know that's not really their fault, but I have to note it anyway. I'd still be more than happy to come back and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone in the area. read more

We met some people for lunch and the place was packed. The servers never stopped working hard and they kept our drinks full. I ordered the Reuben with fries and the portion was large. The sandwich was very good and the fries were average. I'd prefer crispier fries but that's just a personal preference. The food took quite awhile to arrive considering we just had 2 sandwiches, a wrap, and a salad. It was nearly 30 minutes for our food to show up and it truly felt like our order wasn't sent to the kitchen, but who knows. Overall, cool local spot downtown that we will come try again. read more

The service was phenomenal. Our waitress was on top of my issues, and spoke with the chef/cooking staff. I ordered the bone in pork chop, with risotto. Bam! This was one phenomenal meal. Walked in and was warmly greeted and told happy birthday (our reservation notes said we were celebrating his 40th). We were seated and then greeted by our waitress. She was friendly. Service was a little slow but the atmosphere leads me to believe most people hand out and have drinks. We stared with the filet medallions as an appetizer. It was good. The hollandaise sauce was delicious and light. The asparagus was tender. Very good start with flavor, however, it was clunky. It was two small chunk a of steak. The miss for me was the presentation. Slicing the filet into thin strips would have made it soak in more sauce and overall easier to share with the table. I had the seafood pasta with white wine sauce for my entree. It was pretty but just okay. The menu said scallops, shrimp, and mussels. There was a lot of little teeny tiny scallops. I prefer the large scallops so we have was my error ordering it. The shrimp were good. The white wine sauce soaked in all the seafood flavor and was slightly fishy. My boys had the Wagu burger which is slathered in pimento cheese, severed with fingerling potatoes. They both enjoyed. For dessert, I had chocolate mouse cake. Delicious! My son had the crème brûlée. He wasn't sure he liked the Carmel drizzle. Restaurant week and we're out to Cafe 220 on Saturday night. We literally walked in with the evening's mood music: a lightly amplified guitarist in lieu of overhead to accompany dinner. Our server was fabulous taking care of me and the cutest of chicks as we made our way through the short menu... Fried Goat Cheeses were hot and melty cheesy balls covered in a crispy coat of breading that played well with some balsamic cranberries from the broilered Brussels Sprouts which were accompanied by a handful of walnuts and a dose of pleasantly pungent blue cheese. the cheese wasn't especially goaty - which sometimes happens or possibly due to the fryer - but the sprouts were slightly singed and fabulous. Wasabi Tuna was fun! two chunks of pink-centered tunas on a pillow of taters: the wasabi was mild as far as wasabi goes, not overpowering the fish but offering a solid horsey-radishy counter to the not-so-fishy fish. for a change the Shrimp and Grits lived up to the hype. A fairly straightforward presentation that reads right off the menu: white wine sauce with bacons and 'maters and shallot and garlic surrounding some shrimps on an island of grits... so very good! for dessert we selected a berry tart topped with chocolate drizzled vanilla ice cream and a slice of blue berry topped chocolate mousse cake which were both quite good and an appropriate finish to an evening out. yea food! read more

We had a really nice time for a date night with some friends. We've been trying out the Statesville area more regularly and our friends are more familiar so they suggested 220. We ordered an array of food. My boyfriend and I started with a salad, I enjoyed filet medallions with asparagus and fries, he experienced the duck. We ended up with dessert for the table. A couple of drinks as well! Service was really nice and inviting. It was Halloween weekend and everyone had super fun witches hats. The space is smaller so it was an intimate evening. I read the reviews as my family and I were passing through Statesville on our way home to Atlanta. It sounded like a great place to stop and eat during a long road trip. But I guess I will never know how the food tastes because the hostess leaned past me, my 20-year old African American son and my 20 year old African American and Latino nephew to ask the WHITE couple behind us if they had a reservation! Excellent!!! We came here for lunch today, and I was so glad I found this wonderful place on YELP. We had to circle the block to find a parking place, but even if we had to have walked a mile to get here, the food is worth it. Everything looked so delicious. I kept staring at other people's plates. The chef does such an amazing presentation of the dishes. I had the ham and cheese sandwich with some kind of tomato and Parmesan soup. Very good! My husband had the Fish Tacos and Sweet Potato Fries. The waitress said the fries were the best in the world and I think she was right. I wish we lived closer so we could come back. Went there tonight for quick bite. Fairly crowded but was seated quickly and server came by soon thereafter. All downhill after that. Ordered the Thai Beef salad medium rare and Ribeye sandwich with sweet potato fries. Took a long time but they were busy. Meals came out. Thai beef salad was a bowl of lettuce with two pieces of burnt meat on top. Ribeye was full of gristle and sweet potato fries were cold to the touch. Absolutely miserable food. read more

Hungry and stumbled in for dinner... We quickly got seated and were able to able to order shortly after. Food: We got shrimp and grits and I got the 220 salad. They also had chicken tenders and fries for my 9 year old daughter. The shrimp and grits was rich and creamy and one of the BEST we have ever had - definitely recommend! The chicken tenders were also deemed as super yummy by my daughter. I loved every bite of my salad. The grilled asparagus and roasted red peppers definitely made the salad! Ambiance: Such a sweet place! It is a very romantic location for a date night or intimate group gathering. The decor was beautiful and I love how integrated they are with the community. If you're in Statesville, NC you must dine at 220 Cafe! We were greeted by our server, Brittney, she was so welcoming and hospitable. We started off with the Tussock Jumper Pinot Noir then we had the brussels sprouts, shrimp and grits and medallions of beef with asparagus. I ordered the beef medium rare. It was cooked perfectly. My colleague had the shrimp and grits. He hails from Chicago and had never had fries in his life and he said it was an absolutely delicious dish. We opted for the crème brûlée and Keylime cake accompanied by two scoops of vanilla bean. All in all it was an incredible dining experience. The food is authentic with great textures and flavors. It was the kind of meal that you didn't want to rush through because you wanted to savor all of the flavors that the chef creatively prepared for your enjoyment I highly recommend this little gem on broad Street. read more

After waiting 25 minutes for a burger with fries and a cold wrap with fries, the burger was overcooked and the fries a squishy mess. I waited for 10 minutes with no visit from the waitress. I flagged down the bar tender and as I attempted to explain the issue, she turned around and walked away from me. Her excuse was that she had to set down a single menu to pick up my plate. She didn't ask what was wrong or listen to any concern as I called her out for walking away from me mid-sentence. After advising I didn't want it remade, she returned and placed two checks down. One for a sweet tea, which I had, and the other for the second meal - of which only one bite was taken because the fries were bad and the waitress didn't return to resolve our issues during the time we had for our meal. I advised I wouldn't be paying, and the waitress returned to our table for the first time since placing our food. When I asked who I could speak with about the issues, she stated there is no manager. I began to explain my issue again and she loudly stated "Well I'm sorry my service wasn't good enough for YOU today" and began reacting far over the top. When I mentioned the food she nearly shouted "well I don't cook around here! Let me get you the chef!" She spun around shaking her head and screaming to the back before crossing the dining room. We stood up and told the bartender we would not be paying. Had the issue only related to the food, that would have been redeemable. Unfortunately, the god awful attitude of the only two people in the front of the restaurant has done nothing but encourage me to share my experience with everyone I encounter. I've gone out of my way to tell people not to spend their money on these absurd entitled employees. Great little cafe in downtown Statesville. The interiors have soaring ceilings and great picture windows providing light and a view for the restaurant. I visited today at 1:30 and had the place nearly all to myself. I sampled a Cuban sandwich and a side salad with ranch dressing. The salad was very fresh with tomatoes, red onion and carrots and the dressing was homemade and tasty. I did enjoy the sandwich, but the bread was not what I expected: it was a hamburger bun. This is one of our go to restaurants. It is a great meeting place between Winston Salem and Charlotte. Food is delicious!

We initially came here on a Friday night with no reservations. The host seemed concerned and said that we would not be able to be sat for another 30-45 minutes. Someone who appeared to be the owner/manager quickly came up told us to wait five and she would have a table for us. Service was personalized and friendly! Quaint cozy spot for date night. Interior is very eclectic. The menu is on the smaller side which we prefer. The food came out prompt. The portions were a little small for the price , but everything was delicious. Excitedly, we ordered the pumpkin crème brûlée. It wasn't that great sadly. No pumpkin flavor and the egg seem to be cooked in the custard. Texture wasn't good. That is our only complaint! I've been here 4 or 5 times in the last couple years, and every meal has been good to great. The beef and beet salad is probably my favorite so far, and that little glob of fried goat cheese is perfect in it, but the Thai beef salad, ribeye sandwich, mac and cheese, and shrimp & grits all deserve mention. Nothing ever seems rushed or perfunctory, whoever's in the kitchen wants your meal to look and taste great. I read the menu online and what drew me in was a picture of the filet appetizer with asparagus.. my fav. Well, it took nearly 30 minutes to get the appetizer and it looked NOTHING like the picture. Very poor presentation as you can see in the picture. The flavor of the bordelaise was good but the steak was over cooked and cold. I ordered chicken as my entree and it took over an hour, although it was very tasty. This is a small establishment and it wasn't busy that evening, so I'm not sure what the hold up was. I have been to this restaurant a number of times, and the food is very good. However, I have criticize the manager and staff on a recent visit. We came to the restaurant for a quiet lunch and were seated next to a table of four very loud ladies, who had been drinking. it made the meal unpleasant with their yelling and laughing loudly. I could see other patrons were getting upset. My suggestion for the restaurant: if you know you have a rowdy table, sit new guests coming in as far away as you can. Or have the guts to ask loud or drunk patrons to quiet down. In this case, one of the rowdy foolish patrons said to our waitress ", I hope we are not driving customers away." We visited this Cafe while staying nearby. The meal from start to finish was excellent. I enjoyed shrimp and grits. Very nice presentation. Salads were all served on chilled plates. Mixed greens with appropriate toppings. All in our party enjoyed the meal. Craft beer on tap is a real plus. This place is quiet and conversations could easily be heard. I'm so upset that I didn't take pictures. Dinner was absolutely superb. Kelly the owner waited on us, it's owned by a female, which I love to support. We started with mussels and stuffed mushrooms, the mussels was in a Lightly spicy red sauce. The mushrooms were amazing they were portobello mushroom filled with sausage and cheese. My mom and sister split the seafood pasta and salmon. They were outstanding. I got a chicken dish that I really enjoyed. Then we got a key lime tart which was the die for.
