This is far, far better, and not just because it's closer to my house by a few blocks (although that helps). Selection at this liquor store is better than average for this otherwise underwhelming corner of Portland. At times I can score Rittenhouse and other desirables, but it doesn't come close to some of the downtown outposts like Pearl. Good enough, It gets me what I need and goes beyond the usual major brands. Price? Same as every other Oregon liquor store. OLCC rules. Service? Some of the old practices from the 102nd location survive, such as backpack-check requirements. Kind of annoying but NBD. To be expected east of 205. Parking? Once again, an upgrade from 102nd, but this lot is notoriously annoying. Thank the developers for odd angles, inopportune planting strips and weird blind corners. Fortunately I can walk here if I need (less than a mile) so whatever for the parking. Solid 4-star Oregon liquor experience. Yeah.

This is a rather stable, regulated industry. I'm not in the market for distilled beverages often. WAY less than most folks, but each time I've gone no matter what store, I found sales, specials and Rebate forms, and at Gateway staff helped me find a variety of inexpensive decent quality Vodkas to stock up for a long winter of hosting, and a possible Tasting Party. I did get a rebate Check for $15 for the Pinnacle Vodka I bought that day...which made it: Free. WOOT! The men staff were approachable and professional. When purchasing vodka I let them know what brands I typically purchase and then I ask if something similar happens to be on sale. They offer a great selection of mixers here. The last margarita mix I purchased was fantastic! (I don't recall the name) . It wasn't super sweet and full of syrup like many of the ones I have tried in the past. Do I sometimes wish the bottles were not behind the counter? Sure, but using the staff to help me with my purchases probably ends up saving me a ton of time because I tend to be very indecisive. When I entered this shop, I doubted they'd have this item as it's a fairly small store, but I asked the lady behind the counter and she immediately said they had that and, even better, it just went on sale last night! Wow, that never happens to me (usually I miss any sale by a day). And I saw they had a whole line-up of flavored Smirnoff vodkas. Tons of flavors here. Nice! The lady was super nice and we chatted for a bit. Noone else was in the store. She helped me calculate my allowances re: how much alcohol I can bring back into Canada while being exempt from duties and taxes (I was considering getting two bottles but, as it turned out, that would've exceeded my allowance. Bummer). Anyhow, she was very helpful and friendly, and whenever I visit my kid in the future, for sure I'll come here to get our cocktail spirits - and another bottle of my flavored vodka, too!
