I worked directly with Mark Raskin as a first-time homebuyer, and unfortunately my experience was…read morevery disappointing. The most frustrating part was not my credit score itself, but the lack of proactive guidance. Before my mortgage application, I believed my credit score was much higher than it actually was. Once my credit was pulled, it became clear that there was a significant gap between my expectations and reality. However, I was never proactively informed about the situation, its impact on my mortgage options, or potential remedies that might have been available. I later learned about rapid rescore through my own research rather than from my lender. Given my credit profile, this was something I believe should at least have been discussed. Instead, I remained unaware of important information that could have affected my decisions during a very time-sensitive period. When I later reached out with questions, I did not feel supported or educated as a first-time borrower. Conversations often felt rushed and dismissive, and I was repeatedly told that I could simply refinance later. While refinancing may be an option in the future, it is not free, effortless, or a substitute for helping borrowers understand all available options before closing. As a first-time homebuyer, I expected more proactive communication, guidance, and attention to detail. Unfortunately, that was not my experience.

We used Austin Mortgage Associates for our home refinance. This is the 3rd home we've owned, so…read morewe're not babes in the woods. James Copeland worked with us to make the deal happen. He personally took charge of pulling together our paperwork (not handing it off to someone else), making sure we had everything needed and coordinating the process. I asked some fairly tough questions that James handled well. We were evaluating 3 mortgage brokers at the time. The two other brokers were our current mortgage holder and the previous one (who sold the thing). We have no complaints about the other brokers. They all had competitive deals in the new "inflation related" mortgage finance world. James stood out because of his personal energy, his seeming commitment to our story, his willingness to listen, his keeping the process going (and not stagnating at some point), and the fact he was local, not in an office hundreds/thousands of miles away. After the closing I let James know I hadn't received a copy of the appraisal as I should have. I don't know why I hadn't received it earlier (spam folder?) I got one from James 5 minutes later. The other brokers would have gotten a 4 star rating. James Copeland and Austin Mortgage got 5.

On Tuesday, June 18th at 8am I called to notify the. That we had completed the course, and because we were on a timeline I needed them to get the certificate over to the lender. They told me it would be sent that day. On Wednesday, June 19th it still hadn't been sent. I called an could not get an answer at any of the extensions until I chose the President of the companies extension. When he answered he was very rude. He said, "No one is working today because it's a national holiday." I asked what holiday. He then smarted off by saying, "You must not be from Texas." I informed that I was, and what did that have to do with it. He then told me it was Juneteenth. I asked, "What does that have to do with being a native born Texan?". I told him that I was told that the certificate for the course would be sent, but it was not. I told him we needed it for the lender. He then rudely told me that I would have to wait until the following day and hung up. I have owned businesses. This is not how a true Texan, if he is one, treats people. I would have gone out of my way to fix the issue. Obviously that is not how he does business.
