There is the Welcome Center there that we went into and the women were total sweethearts. It didn't appear that they got much business because they were very glad to hear that the three of us were all from different cities in Florida so when we signed the register book it was three different cities along with three different names. These women were totally in character for this part of the country and you could feel the butter melt with their warmth and kindness. The National refuge was really unexpected and quite beautiful. It was informational and educational. This was one of the best stops we unexpectedly made on our road trip. Just goes to show you never know what you're going to find when you pull over and stop in to someplace new, no matter where it is in the country. What's a girl to do? Hey, when you're on a road trip you want to stop and see and do everything so take your time and see as much as you can.

The restrooms are in one building and the Visitor's Center is in a nearby building. Both buildings were clean. A family restroom is available, too. I was immediately greeted upon entering the Visitor's Center and provided with the information I was looking for about Tyrell County. I was pointed in the right direction to get to the boardwalk and downtown, and some places were suggested to stop. I enjoyed the quilts and North Carolina items to view in the Visitor's Center. I could read about the area and its unique ecosystem. The Visitor's Center has travel information for the whole state. I was allowed to stay parked in the parking lot while I went on my walking journey. The tips and insight helped me have an enjoyable stop in Tyrell County. Although many of the businesses I had hoped to visit were not open, I can't fault the Visitor's Center for that. They might be open on my next visit.

From the 18th century onward, the seat moved from Brook Field to Relfe's Point, then Winfield, Nixonton, and finally Elizabeth Town in 1800 which was renamed to Elizabeth City. Waterside Resort…read more Just like previous reviews I read it really is in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't like any other property I have stayed at. Normally you go check in at the front desk and there's someone there to help you whenever you need it. At this location the office is not open 24/7 and I think one of the apartments was converted to be partly the office. They do provide an after hours number. There are a lot of bugs. They have a couple bug traps around the property, but it really isn't enough. We saw a lot of gnats and spider webs. The trolley carts to take your bags up to your room were rusty and you couldn't put too much on it or the tires would go flat. We were worried that this was going to be a mistake. When we finally got our keys and went into our room It was completely different. The space is a generous size. The kitchen is huge. I wish my kitchen was that big. The first bedroom had a separate shower and tub. The tub had jets, but I didn't know how to work them so I couldn't get them to come on. The towels aren't very soft. We usually bring our own so that wasn't a big issue. Maintenance had to come to help with our remotes because they weren't working with the TVs. Apparently dish network remotes have to stay in the same room as the box. Maybe a suggestion on that would be to label the remotes with what room they go in because they are all the same. The beds. Were comfortable and everything was clean. They provide a washer and dryer, however our dryer wasn't drying the clothes. The office was closed that day and I called after hours and maintenance came over quickly. He did his best, but wasn't able to fix it. They offered to let me bring my clothes to the office to be dried and maintenance was very nice when we had to call. There is a large balcony with chairs and tables where you can sit outside and enjoy the view. The view is spectacular. The water is so calming and beautiful. The pool was cold, but I think that is to be expected in October. Not all of the jets worked in the hot tub and the water wasn't very hot. We didn't use the fire pit but they do have that as an option and they also have a BBQ with utensils. There is a cute gazebo with chairs that you can sit in and just enjoy the quiet and the water . There is a small town across the bridge called Edenton. A lot of places were closed during the week. We didn't get to go into the lighthouse, but we went into one of the other houses that had a bookstore. The people in there were really friendly and told us some history about the town. I do recommend checking it out. It does have its own little history. They have a couple of restaurants that aren't too pricey, and have decent food. It's not the best I've had, but it's also not the worst. We drove over to a Piggly Wiggly, which was about 20 minutes away in Plymouth I think. That area was pretty scarce. They did have some fast food restaurants. I bought two packs of meat at the store so I can make two meals in our room. The meat went bad after only a day. I recommend going to the Food Lion instead . They have a Food Lion in Edenton, which was nice and convenient. There is a Walmart about 45 minutes away and the best way to tell I'm not a country girl is my excitement to see a Starbucks lol. If you are looking for a place to go relax and be left alone, this is the place for you. It's perfect for sitting outside and reading a book. We played games every night and it was a really nice place just hang out with your family. I don't think it was worth 215,000 points though.

The Barker House in Edenton, North Carolina, is a storied landmark that blends architectural…read moreelegance with deep historical resonance. Built in 1782 for Thomas and Penelope Barker, the home originally stood two blocks north of its current location and began as a modest Federal-style parlor wing and half hall. Penelope Barker is best known for organizing the Edenton Tea Party in 1774, a bold act of protest in which 51 women signed a petition against British taxation--making it one of the earliest political demonstrations by women in America. Unlike the Boston Tea Party, these women signed their names and sent the petition directly to King George III, drawing international attention and criticism from British newspapers. Since relocated (yes, they moved it two blocks), it now serves as Edenton's Welcome Center and the headquarters of the Edenton Historical Commission. Stop in for information about Edenton sights and history. I wasn't staying long here, but I was helped by friendly folks who clearly love their town.
