My friend and I had an overnight at the 1878 RiverRun B&B as a mutual birthday gift. What a lovely experience!

This place is under new management. Previous reviews are for the previous owner. We've stayed in B&Bs across the country for years, and sadly, this was by far the most unsettling experience we've ever had -- which was deeply disappointing, as we've been visiting this property for over 15 years under the former owner, who was absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, the new owner's behavior was unprofessional and, frankly, upsetting. When we called for help with the front door (which wouldn't open), he responded with hostility, telling us he wasn't our "servant" and proceeding to lecture us for nearly 20 minutes -- without letting us speak. The call was loud, one-sided, and extremely uncomfortable. It escalated further when we were briefly locked out remotely, seemingly as a way to assert control. Feeling threatened, we stayed inside the rest of the evening, watching the door. We also spoke with another group checking in the next day who had their own negative experience. One of them said, unprompted: "This man should not be running a B&B." We agree. I rarely write negative reviews, but in this case, there are much more welcoming, safe, and professional options in Hancock -- I highly recommend choosing one of those instead. read more

We stayed at the 1878 RiverRun B&B last week. This is our third bike trip on the C&O Canal. We have stayed many places along the way, and the 1878 RiverRun B&B is by far the best accommodation that we have ever visited along the trail and perhaps anywhere for that matter. The owners/managers, Quelli and Sid, are the most thoughtful hosts in the B&B business. This is evidenced by the exceptionally clean facility and the well-stocked kitchen. After a 70-mile ride from Brunswick, MD, it was like landing in a cornucopia. Not only do they cover the essentials, like butter, eggs, toast, sausage, healthy granolas, peanut butter, and honey, but they also have an emergency cabinet filled with dinner items for late arrivals. The refrigerator is also well stocked with electrolyte drinks, beer, and wine. There are trail bars, jerky, bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, and an entire shelf of pharmacological offerings for blisters, sore muscles, or indigestion. So thoughtful! The last thing that an exhausted biker wants to do is land in a strange town and have to go on a treasure hunt in order to find these items for a bit of comfort or relief. We did not have the pleasure of meeting Quelli or Sid, but they did stay in touch via email as soon as we checked in. They offered to support us in any way should we need something not already stocked in the house. I would love to meet them someday, because I know they must both be thoughtful, intelligent, and kind, as these qualities are reflected in every corner of the RiverRun B&B. 1878 RiverRun was an amazing place to stay while we biked the GAP and C&O canal trails this October. The rooms and kitchen were well appointed and organized. There was a separate locked area with pumps and tools to securely store bikes. The room we stayed in was spacious and comfortable. We will definitely stay at this location again and highly recommend! read more

We found this lovely B&B to stay at after we discovered a local bike shop would shuttle us to two locations to help us complete two more sections of the C&O canal. We used this B&B as a base. It was the perfect stopping point for both days, with comfy beds, spacious rooms, and fluffy (and extra) towels. The dining area was very well supplied with multiple choices for breakfast and snacks (both refrigerated and pantry). Evenings were spent in the upstairs common room playing cards and relaxing. We were glad to see the bike storage area (and hose to wash off the trail dust). Strongly recommend this for anyone who is visiting the area for any of the recreational opportunities. read more

One of the best places to stay on the C&O. We've been here twice and just love it! It's immaculate, very well stocked with foods/drinks for cyclists or hikers and very comfortable. Sid and Quell always answer their phone, answer questions and are very easy to deal with. My husband and I stayed there in September and came back in October. We are slowly cycling the C&O Canal and highly recommend staying here!! read more

What a gem in this quaint, authentic small town on the C& O canal. Traveling home from the outer banks, we decided to stop in Hancock, MD, our half way point. Already partial to this town after a fall 2016 bike ride, we were delighted by the simple elegance and charm of this B&B. The owners, Susan and Sinclair are experienced Inn keepers and it shows. The Inn was designed by them for the purpose of comfort and quiet. It is immaculate, simply yet beautifully decorated, and includes all the comforts weary travels would need. Our bed was firm and comfortable. Had we been biking, we would have thoroughly appreciated the laundry machines, safe storage for bikes, and WiFi-computer. He view of the canal and Potomac river from the great room balcony was amazing. We enjoyed watching the sun go down and the fireflies can me out. Our breakfast was simple and delicious, with great options for vegetarians. Susan's company and stories of the local area were appreciated. read more

I loved staying here, and would plan any future trips in the area to include lodging here! The house feels safe, clean and welcoming. Sinclair, a co-owner with his wife, is an artist and very involved with the local arts council. Breakfast is basic - soft boiled eggs, toast, Activia blueberry yogurt, granola and Cheerios with dairy milk, bananas and apples, baby bel Gouda and Laughing Cow cheeses ... and coffee and tea of course I wished for juice, soy or almond milk, peanut butter, or a nut butter, eggs scrambled or even hard boiled, oatmeal I was cycling from Pittsburgh to DC 60+ miles a day, and I was hungry! There was just one other guest that night, another woman, and there was just enough served for two women. I was starving and it didn't feel acceptable to eat the quantity I needed to fuel me for the day. I still thoroughly enjoyed my stay though. :) read more

We bicycled down the C&O canal and this was the best lodging we stayed in. Really convenient to the trail and town. Nice rooms and a really nice reading room. Kitchen is open for your convenience any time. A real plus for a town in decline. read more

I stayed at the Riverrun B&B in August, 2017 while on my bike trip on the C&O/GAP. Very nice place, updated, clean, washer/dryer, and a very short walk the restaurant. Right on C&O/Western Maryland Rail Trail. I give this place an A+. Todd M Mentor, Ohio read more

Riverrun B&B is where we stayed on our bicycle trip along the C&O from Cumberland to Washington DC. It was ultra convenient as the inn is literally between the 100 feet or so between C&O canal and the Western Maryland Rail Trail! So as soon as you get off the trail, you're "home"! There's also a bike shop nearby in case you need any repairs. The front door is the WMRT; Canal is at the back door so we were able to wheel our bicycles into the basement which appears to double as a gigantic artist's studio. So it meant our gear was all secure overnight with no hassles whatsoever. Upstairs, the rooms are all unique, each with a private bath. The inn is a historic building but much of it has been updated so most everything on the inside is all new and clean. Since we were doing the entire towpath, we were quite dirty but that didn't bother the innkeepers at all and they let us use the washer/dryer to clean our clothes. They also have a phone, computer, and high-speed internet available in the common room plus WiFi throughout and we made use of this to set up lodging for the later part of our trip. The B&B is nicely situated in the middle of downtown Hancock so it was a 5-minute stroll later to walk around and check out the restaurants for dinner. But it's protected from the main street so there's no noise whatsoever which made for a wonderful night's sleep. The innkeepers are both very nice and very knowledgeable about the area, and gave us recommendations for other things to see and do on our trip that we hadn't seen described anywhere else. In the morning, they made us a hearty breakfast and bade us farewell. We definitely recommend this place! read more

My best friend and I stayed here on our second night of our bike adventure from Washington DC to Pittsburgh. It was fantastic! We arrived after a long day of biking and were ready to hit the hay. Waiting for us was a beautiful yellow B&B perched right above the canal in the center of Hancock. When the Inn Keeper, Sinclair, came to great us he made sure we were able to order a pizza from a local spot before they closed and he also offered us all we might want from the fully stocked fridge. That was an incredible extra touch we didn't encounter at any of our other hostels or B&Bs along the way. There was ample storage along with a hose and some rags for our bikes around back, so for anyone traveling by bike you will find this to be incredibly convenient. It was also a locked basement so we didn't have to worry about the bikes at all. Our room was on the first floor and it had a gorgeous stone fire place. It was clean and really well decorated, but by far the best feature was the Hyatt Hotel sized bathroom with fresh white towels to match. It is obvious the entire building has been updated recently, so unlike some other B&Bs it has all modern appliances. Our breakfast the next morning was also great. They even offered vegetarian options so as a veggie I was super pleased. I highly recommend this place! read more

My son and I stayed at the Riverrun B & B heading north on the C & O Canal Towpath just this last week. I called three times before Sinclair, the owner, returned my call (I believe he said he was out of town for the day), but I'm so glad I persevered and kept at it because our stay was wonderful! First, this B and B is literally 50 feet from the towpath. When you've run (my son) and ridden (me) 45 miles in a day, the very last thing you want to do is stray from the path for accommodations. Second, Sinclair is incredibly kind and friendly, and made us feel welcome from the start. The home is spotless, the beds very comfortable, and there was a washer and dryer available for our use (much appreciated after a day riding in the rain/mud). Sinclair even allowed me to lock my bike in the basement. My son and I were the sole guests that evening; Sinclair asked if it was okay if we helped ourselves to all of the breakfast foods provided in the frig/freezer (quite a large selection-yogurt, eggs, bread, sausage, jams, almond butters, protein patties, etc, etc), which we were. Coffee and teas (as well as chocolates) were also provided. Our stay was above and beyond what we had expected. Many thanks, Sinclair for an exceptional visit!!! read more

Three of us were on a bike trip from Pittsburgh to DC. This B&B is right on the trail and set up for bicyclists. They have a storage room for bikes with hose, rags, tire pumps and minor tools. Rooms were clean, well decorated and you have your own spacious bathroom. There were snacks in the kitchen along with a washer & dryer upstairs, wifi , and a computer that you can borrow if needed. The deck overlooking the canal is a nice space to discuss the day's ride. Breakfast was excellent with soft boiled eggs, toast, english muffins, fresh fruit and other breakfast foods. I highly recommend stopping here if you are riding the C & O trail. read more

This 5 bedroom B&B was a gem along C&O canal trail and Western Maryland Rail trail. We really enjoyed staying in this bright, clean and simple B&B that is conveniently located along the canal. It has a beautiful view of the canal, off of major street thus very quite. The owners, Sinclaire and Susan were very polite and resourceful. They made us feel at home, use of the kitchen and laundry machine were very convenient after 4 days of biking from Pittsburg. I particularly liked the fact that I can get up early and able to enjoy cup of coffee, Greek yogurt and donuts without having to wait for someone to prepare breakfast while enjoying serene view of the canal. Susan came and prepared breakfast that included fresh fruit. Also enjoyed meeting fellow bikers and sharing biking stories and drinks in the dining area. read more
