We recently stayed at this B&B in Berkeley Springs, WV, and would gladly stay there again. It is a lovely Victorian style home which has been restored, redecorated and updated with essential modern conveniences. Redolent with charm of the old days with plenty of modern examples of taste and convenience. The house is filled with little flourishes that delight the senses. The couple who own and run the place have achieved mastery in cuisine, decor, hospitality, and grace. Claire and Greg are a strong and effective team. They seem to have made hospitality the central point of their lives. Greg is easy to talk to, he's a mellow master of ceremonies. Convivial, he keeps cups recharged while he engages everyone in friendly conversation, while he tells stories about the town and local characters. Claire is a Tour de Force and creative focal point of the Mendenhall 1884 experience; energetic, funny, and warm, we were left with an impression of between a frenetic tv chef and a ballet dancer...she seems to dance her way through life, bestowing hospitality and beauty as she glides. After a long drive, we were met with a warm welcome, and Claire served us a charcuterie board customized to our dietary preferences. (Pre-arranged.) We had also ordered a bottle of wine, which they served to us chilled per our request. Technology--The house has no television screens. This may be a drawback for some guests. Not for us. We wanted to escape from the noise. The house has a good wifi signal. The bedroom doors still have antique door knobs and latches, be careful not to let the old lock engage, don't even touch it, but instead use the modern bolt the owners installed above the old. Decor--romantic, each room has it's own artistic theme, with plenty of complementary accents, like the light swtich plates had a floral design that matched the flower mural on one wall. Food- charcuterie board, gourmet breakfasts, accomodates dietary prefs, eggs from their own hens, food sources all local...eating on the front porch, table settings are elegant, Claire's cooking is healthy, organic, and delicious. Location- walking distance of entire town, a block behind main street Comfort- House temperature is nice, beds are soft and comfortable, spring water available for every room in glass bottles, cafe service in every room for tea or coffee Sleep quality- The bed is very soft and comfortable, four pillows, easy to fall asleep early and sleep in late Privacy- you can keep to yourself or hang out with the group Atmosphere-hosts cultivate friendly vibe; it's easy to talk to your neighbors at breakfast or hanging out on the back porch or in the back garden. read more

My wife and I experienced one of the best weekend getaways in our 32+ years of marriage in Berkeley Springs, WV recently (Dec. 2-4). The crowned jewel of our weekend was our two-night stay at the Mendenhall 1884 Inn Bed and Breakfast. Inn keepers Claire and Greg made us feel right at home with their warm and genuine personalities. Our hosts were well versed on the local activities, shops, restaurants, parks, and sights that we wanted to take in while we visited Berkeley Springs and the surrounding area. Greg was very helpful over the phone weeks before our stay offering recommendations so that we could make the most out of our stay. He even took care of making several restaurant reservations on our behalf. Upon our arrival Friday afternoon, Greg welcomed us and got us oriented with the house to include our room and amenities. This house has been impeccably restored that respects the rich history of the home but spares nothing when it comes to comfort and quality. The smallest details were not overlooked. Everything was spotless and in good working order. The location of this B&B was perfect for us to take in the many offerings of downtown Berkeley Springs, most of which we walked to. Our weekend included shopping and sight-seeing, the Cocoa Crawl event, watching the local Christmas parade, enjoying a soak at the Roman bath house, experiencing several wonderful local restaurants, and a fantastic one-hour massage at the Inn by in-house massage therapist Charlene. Each morning, Claire prepares and offers a gourmet breakfast experience like no other. Her food quality and presentation were fantastic. Most of the ingredients and food items she uses are sourced from local farms and businesses where possible. Claire and Greg work as a seamless team covering all aspects of service and comfort for their guests. It was obvious they are passionate about what they do. We arrived at the Inn as strangers, but left Sunday feeling as if we had known this wonderful couple for years. We look forward to the opportunity to return to Berkeley Springs for a future getaway which will include a "must-stay" at the Mendenhall 1884 Inn Bed and Breakfast. Claire and Greg, job well done! We stayed in Bailey's Bungalow at the Mendenhall 1884 B&B for an early anniversary get-away. We were in need of rest, relaxation and down time and that's exactly what we got plus some unexpected treasures! Claire and Greg are top-notch hosts making us feel welcome while showing a genuine interest in us as well as the other guests. Claire outdid herself with the amazing breakfasts; so delicious and equally beautiful! She is so talented! Greg was the epitome of helpfulness, and his knowledge of the town was impressive. They provided info on happenings about town each day, restaurant recommendations as well as other things to do and also helped us with reservations. Our room is the smallest in the house, I believe, but full of charm and the best sheets and bedding I've ever slept on. They have little touches of hospitality in the room like a pour over coffee set up, little fridge/cooler, fresh water from the mineral springs, comfy robes, books and games! We reserved 90 minute massages at the Inn that were beyond amazing! Best we've ever had. Upon their recommendation, we also got reservations for the mineral bath which was equally amazing and relaxing. They have a quaint front porch and lovely garden in the back yard with plenty of seating for relaxing any time of the day. Claire and Greg are a dynamic duo; warm and friendly with a true gift of hospitality. We highly recommend this Inn if you're looking for an inviting place to stay and be rejuvenated. Spent a long weekend at Mendenhall 1884 with a group of friends - the experience exceeded our expectations! The property is beautifully maintained - from the colorful gardens to the sweet details in each room. Out time spent on the front porch and in the gorgeous garden patio was my favorite and I look forward to returning. The setting is wonderful and the location within steps of the heart of Berkeley Springs is second to none. All of the above is reason enough to visit the Mendenhall 1884, but what makes the experience out of this world are the amazing innkeepers Claire and Greg. They were attentive and gracious hosts who went above and beyond to make our visit special. Their passion for what they do was clear and I was struck by how supportive they were of the town and their fellow business owners. Claire impressed us each morning with delicious creations that were as tasty as they were beautiful. Greg was a fountain of information and never grew tired of our questions about the town. A must for your Bucket List! Mendenhall 1884 is a treasure, centrally located in Berkeley Springs, W Virginia. This Bed & Breakfast is very well maintained and professionally managed. Breakfast was comparable to dishes featured in Food & Wine magazine, and the service was ON POINT! The inn keepers (owners) Greg & Claire are personable and well traveled, thus you never run out of things to talk about. The beds were so very comfortable with white puffy bedding, plenty of pillows, and the perfect weight comforter. Organic snacks-including dark chocolates, high quality teas and coffee were abundantly available in the rooms and throughout the house. Oh, and any visit should include a massage by Charlene! She is very well trained, has over 20 years of experience, and knows what she is doing! Overall, Mendenhall 1884 is spectacular. Every now and then, you stumble upon a place that takes you completely by surprise. A place so charming and inviting that you can't wait to return for another stay. That place is the Mendenhall 1884 Inn Bed and Breakfast. The hospitality extended to us made our small group feel as if we were visiting old friends. Mayor Greg and Claire Schene, Innkeepers and owners of this lovely inn were both gracious and attentive. Each room is uniquely themed and beautifully designed. The special touches and the minute attention to detail, from the "handwritten" welcomes in the blankets to the early morning disco party made us feel special from beginning to end. Breakfasts were delicious; beautifully and elegantly served on the front porch. And when you book your stay, do yourself a favor, order the charcuterie board. You won't be disappointed! We had a delightful stay for four nights. This five-star B&B exceeded our expectations in a small town. The home is lovely and well appointed. We loved the personal touches with the birthday card, balloon, and bottle of wine. Claire and Greg were gracious and the most friendliness hosts. Our room was spacious and the bed was perfect. The on-site licensed massage therapist was wonderful. The organic gourmet breakfasts were delicious! The teas and coffee were sourced from a local organic shop just steps from the B&B. Also, their evening restaurant recommendations were superb. The Old Roman Bath House, summer concerts venue, farmers market, and State Park were a short stroll from the B&B. It was a memorable stay and would highly recommend the Mendenhall 1884 as the perfect stay when in Berkley Springs, WV. We had a wonderful stay here. The home is beautifully restored and decorated with great attention to detail. The rooms are beautifully decorated, clean and have the absolute most cozy and comfortable bedding. Claire prepares exquisite gourmet style breakfasts. We enjoyed a charcuterie board prepared by Claire that exceeded any expectation. It should have been called a gourmet dining experience as it included smoked salmon, cauliflower cheese casserole, grilled slider burgers as well as cheeses, fruits snd veggies. Claire and Greg make you feel like you're at home with old friends. Mendenhall B&B is a gem in Berkeley Springs. Caring and personable hosts, Greg and Clair are always anxious to see how they can make your stay more comfortable. Claire is an excellent cook who went out of her way to accommodate our plant based diet with her delicious cooking. The house is impeccably kept and the decor is beautiful with attention to its historical past. No small detail has been overlooked from fresh spring water in your room, to fine linens and towels to breakfast served on fine china with silver utensils. Greg has never met a stranger and is apt to join you on the large porch for easy conversation. We planned on a massage while there. The parlor in the house has been turned into a cozy spa and the certified massage therapist is excellent! We look forward to our next visit!! read more

It was our distinct pleasure to visit the charming Mendenhall 1884 B&B recently. It is a magnificently restored historic home in the center of Berkeley Springs within easy walking distance of shopping, galleries, restaurants and the tourist attractions. The innkeepers, Claire and Greg Schene are delightful hosts, knowledgable in the local history and attentive to any and all needs. Our room was super comfortable with amenities such as refrigerators and a supply of the Berkeley Springs drinking water. Breakfast was another treat, incorporating local fruits and vegetable and Farmers Market selections. Our stay was relaxing and fun. My husband and I got a spur-of-the-moment reservation at Mendenhall, and were treated to first-class service from start to finish. Since it's difficult to get the Berkeley Springs spa to return your call, Greg went down the street and got us a Roman bath scheduled at the exact time we wanted. Using their resource binder, we were able to get a reservation for dinner at Lot 12, an amazing restaurant! Our room was luxurious and comfortable, and the breakfast, out on the porch, managed to be pretty, nutritional, and delicious at the same time. The warm glow of winter decor and lights greeted me for this girls' weekend with my sis-in-law. Beautiful home and wonderful weekend! We stayed in Pearl's Library. The ambiance was soft and inviting. The hosts were so welcoming and accommodating to our dietary requests. The food prepared was truly artistic in its display and tasted as amazing as it looked. Claire went out of her way to buy and use local produce and salts/oils. Greg took care of details such as our morning coffees and nurturing the flower garden. We enjoyed a night of cocktails on the porch with other guests. This is such a sweet bed-and-breakfast! The room we were in was just lovely and quiet. Everything was very clean and comfortable. Claire's breakfast was absolutely delicious, I've never had a broiled grapefruit before it was awesome along with the other goodies she served, fantastic! Greg and Claire are both just delightful and very personable. We realily enjoyed chatting with them and learning about the town. This is truly a 5+Star B&B! Every detail was taken care of. I stayed in the Courtyard View room. I had my own courtyard and parking space. The room and courtyard were clean, beautiful, and perfect for rest and relaxation! The food was prepared and presented on a perfectly set table with linen napkins, candles and good china. We just had our second stay here, our last one being two years ago. Amazing! Such an excellent stay. Comfortable accommodations and very gracious hosts, they go out of their way to make it a special experience. Claire makes incredibly delicious breakfasts, focusing on organic locally sourced ingredients. We stayed in Pearl's Library this time, a large room with a king bed. I slept so well in the comfy linens! We have family in the area and plan to stay again when we come to visit! Great place to stay! Half block from the mineral bath house and treed park, shops all within a block or two--great browsing and small owner-run restaurants. The Inn is a restored older building exquisitely appointed in country casual by Claire and Greg, who are both lovely kind, attentive, and accommodating. I needed rest badly and got it--mineral waters, best massages I've ever had by Charlene, a comfy clean high-toned bed with pillows to die for, and super breakfasts laid out on small tables in plain air on the front porch. Two years ago, my husband and I had the most relaxing and amazing time at Mendenhall Inn over the 4th of July weekend. I couldn't wait to return, so this year I brought a close family friend's mom along to experience it with me. We had an absolute blast!
