Walking out of room 70
Heather S.

Room 70 was clean and the hotel is quaint. We paid 295 after taxes and fees. I could not afford the extra 50 to check in before 2pm, and we were fine with that. The air conditioner ran loudly all night and the bed springs screamed my name once or twice. Even with paying $40 for parking I was still ok because it's only one night and it was the cheapest place around. We would return if we were inclined to revisit gorgeous Laguna again.

The only highlight of the room was the floor to ceiling window.

The uncomfortable beds could be improved. The cleanliness and room damages could also be improved. It's in a convenient location but very rundown. We wouldn't stay there again.

The good: I felt transported to New Orleans with this wrought black iron French-style hotel with a courtyard pool and fun plants. I stayed here recently and enjoyed the location. It's walking distance to the beach and to downtown and a lot of restaurants and shops. I'd stay here again because of the location. I liked that my one bedroom suite had a separate living room with a pullout couch so that my two kids could sleep separately and not wake one another. There were two TVs, a fridge, coffee machine and microwave. There was even a fireplace. There's a Ralph's grocery store across the street so it was really convenient to get snacks. The bad: The listing said the pool was open all year around but it wasn't. You have to pay extra for parking. They forgot to charge me for parking so they called me after I already checked out to charge me. My room was supposed to be ready for an early check-in at 2 but it wasn't ready so I was given a different room. The jacuzzi tub jets didn't work. The interior is quite old. The interesting: The included breakfast was limited to toast, bagels, coffee, tea, danish and packaged oatmeal. The Mexican spot across the street is delicious.

This hotel gets a bad rap, some of the reviews on various sites nearly scared me away from booking my solo trip here but I'm so glad I did! Yes, building is old, rooms are dated (although it appeared they're renovating - this caused zero disruption in my stay), but the character of this property just can't be replicated in the newer chain hotels. My room was clean and comfortable and the grounds were well maintained. The location was so convenient to the beach, restaurants and shopping that I didn't spend any time at the pool but really enjoyed the ambiance the beautiful courtyard offered as I was coming and going. My check in experience was excellent, lots of great recommendations for plant-based options for food nearby. I didn't have a vehicle so didn't pay for parking but was convenient for those who took advantage. Will be back!!! Two things to note - courtyard noise was evident (not much to muffle it from the exterior entrance) and no microwave in the room (but one in the lobby).

Don't waste your time here. Stayed here for a wedding and my rooms temperature defaulted to heat throughout the night, unable to turn on the A/C, or turn off the heat all together. I went down to the Lobby multiple times looking for assistance, where ultimately there was nothing they could do to fix the A/C or even put me in a different room. I was woken up multiple times through the night with the temperature getting as high as 87 degrees. Unfriendly and unprofessional staff all around. Please if you are looking for a get away with your family or friends look elsewhere. I tried to mend this with the front of house staff, they said sorry no reimbursement can be provided, but here's $100 off your next visit.... I'm here for a wedding visiting and would never stay here again. I have provided photos with the time the photo was taken in the photo.

This is with adjusted lighting.

They are so kind and made sure our stay was a pleasant one. The hotel itself is right on the sand. There's beautiful views all throughout the hotel and from the rooms. The location is perfect and close walking distance from many great dining spots. You want to walk whenever possible because parking is a bit stressful and walking allows you to enjoy all that Laguna Beach has to offer. One of my favorite things about the room was being able to open the windows and sliding door to the beautiful ocean breeze. It's the best! (We couldn't do that for a portion of our stay because a couple of the neighbors continued to smoke. Not the hotel's fault because it is non-smoking but we were bummed that we kept smelling it in our room.) The room was nice, quaint and clean in general. For the price per night, I would say it might be due for some up keep just from normal wear and tear, such as new pillows and things like that. It wasn't super fancy or anything but the location of it offered beautiful views! The hotel and staff are lovely overall. We would genuinely stay here again.

The service was excellent and can see that staff takes great care and attention to making sure everything is taken care of. We very much appreciated all the amenities this inn had to offer such as the welcome drink, evening cookies (delicious!), sauna, sunblock at the pool, towels, lovely breakfast.. all complimentary (breakfast with resort fee). We also appreciated the 10% military discount. We stayed in room 23 which was a standard queen bed with garden view and liked that spot because it felt central, private, and quiet. The room is on the smaller side but it was fine. It does not have a fridge but they provide an ice bucket. We ended up putting our bottled waters on top of the AC box and that kept it cool. Being that the inn is beautifully historic, there weren't many outlets inside the room. The bath robes were very plush. Both lamp shade knobs didn't seem to turn properly but we made it work somehow. Otherwise, we felt well taken care of throughout our stay and so glad we came. Aside from the inn, there is a walk to get to Victoria Beach. We walked south along Coast Highway to Victoria Place and found the underpass from there. We also took the free trolley outside of the hotel to get around town. It could be quite a wait for the trolley as we waited 30 mins. There is a QR code on the sign to track the trolley locations.

I had the tomato risotto, which was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The fish tacos were also very good. One pleasant surprise was the salsa--it was fresh, flavorful, and had an authentic homemade taste. The mango turmeric lemonade tasted fresh, healthy, and refreshing. My room appeared to be next to what sounded like a utility or service room, and there was loud equipment noise running throughout the entire night. Sleeping was nearly impossible. I reached out to the hotel by both text and email after my stay and was told the matter would be looked into. It has now been over a week with no follow-up or resolution whatsoever. For the rates Surf & Sand charges, guests should not be placed in rooms with constant overnight noise issues, and concerns should certainly not be ignored afterward. Very disappointing experience from a hotel that presents itself as a luxury property.

I researched every hotel I could find that was within walking distance to the beach in Laguna. I was not sure what to expect since reviews were a little inconsistent. I was very impressed by the ambiance of this hotel! It's gorgeous! It's warm, tropical and beachy. Very unlike a chain hotel. There were a lot of beautiful details that made the hotel unique. The bed was very comfortable too. Our room had direct access to the pool and that was a nice feature. Other reviews mention the high cost, I agree, it was costly with additional fees. However it's not an economy hotel. It's directly on the beach and I expected to pay a premium rate because of that. A welcome note and fruit were left in the room upon arrival. The staff were great, Sam checked us in and he was very sweet. There was another young man with long hair that was also very kind (I didn't get his name, he gave great direction on some local shopping). Maria made an amazing champagne spritz and she was also very hospitable. Would stay at Casa Loma again 100%. It was a very pleasant experience!

Lovely ocean view and can hear the rolling waves with the sliding door open. You can easily walk to the main street and beach front. - Comfy beds - Clean rooms & cute california style throughout lobby and rooms - Check in woman was very friendly, and explained everything about our stay - Welcome drinks - Pet friendly ! Cons - Our room was not serviced for our 2 night stay. We removed our dnd sign from 11-3 and no one came. For $600 a night this is wild to me that our mats were still wet and no coffee refilled, I didn't see the cleaning staff once throughout our stay. - There is no true restaurant at this hotel. Bites and drinks but no substantial meals. Wasn't surprising to see takeout bags all throughout the halls. - As others stated $75 a night parking fee is wild but you can take your car out as much as you like since there is no Valet - zero amenities in the room -- you have to pay for toothbrush, no water bottles or even carafes of water. Overall the staff, outside of the lovely check in woman were essentially non existent. No cleaners, and even in the morning there were 2 men but they didn't greet or acknowledge anyone. Again for $300 it would be fine and expected but for $600 and on some days even $1K a night on the 4th of July this is wildly overpriced for what you get.

My room was extremely clean for the duration of my stay. The gentleman who checked me out at the end of my stay was very pleasant. However, I am only giving three stars because first impressions are lasting and the woman who was working the Office check-in desk when I arrived made me feel like an annoyance who was interrupting her work. She was efficient but less than welcoming during the check-in process. Unfortunately, I had to interact with this woman two more times during my stay and each interaction was equally unpleasant. My goal in staying at The Tides was to destress but she made me feel like "Bad Dog". Soon after checking in, I had to return to the Office to ask for assistance with accessing the WiFi and a day later, I had to ask for assistance with accessing the pool. I assumed that I needed to use my hotel key to open the gate to the pool. The Office woman made me feel like a fool when she rolled her eyes and said in a tone that I interpreted as exasperated, "There's a latch at the upper top corner of the gate." She was right. There was a latch but it was painted the same color as the gate and I didn't notice it. I only noticed the key hole. My bad. As I floated in the pool, I said to myself, "You are Bad Dog." Someone needs to explain to this Office woman that without these pesky visitors, her business will have no customers and she will have no job.
