The food is amazing and all the waitresses are funny and respectful! Even when the establishment was packed they payed attention to everyone and when food was taking a long time they were genuinely kind and apologetic and tried to get it out as fast as they could. Road trip eats on our way from Idaho to Washington State. We saw a few touristy things and headed back to town, and stopped at the 1188 Brewing Company. Street parking, no outdoor seating. Nice open space with a variety of patrons and seating arrangements. The menu features standard grill fare, along with a selection of fun beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Fast service, and the food was fantastic. House-cut fries were so delicious, I didn't leave one on the plate! Hubby had fish & chips; it was tasty and perfectly cooked. Definitely try the basil-mint lemonade, it was fantastic! The waitstaff was friendly and made us feel at home. This is on our must-visit next time through list. read more

The best cheeseburger we have had, including homemade burgers. The fries, onion rings are equally delicious. One in our party had a chicken club with a side salad, he ate every bite of his club, yummy. Chantell, our server, was terrific!! Nice young lady who got us in and out without feeling rushed. Busy on a Monday night, but we were quickly seated. I am intrigued by the teas they have, not bagged but loose and specialty blends. I tried one, can't remember the name, and it was very good. The longer it steeped, the naturally sweeter it got. Possibly the licorice? The cinnamon? They also have several beers and ciders on tap, choose from the overhead sign. Dinner was a SW salad, HUGE, fresh, crispy lettuce with tortilla strips, corn, black beans and tomatoes with chipotle ranch and a perfectly cooked chicken breast. The ranch needed more chipotle for my taste,, but that's a preference thing. The burger was a half-pound monster of Wagyu beef. I'm told it was very good. We only stayed in john day 1 night but this was the highlight of the stay. The patio was great since we had 2 small dogs and the food was killer. Now the beer... I have never had a better beer than the db Cooper. The berry and hefe combo was amazing as was the light peach beer. read more

Generous portion and wonderful service! We had dinner at 1188 after a long day of sightseeing near John Day. Overall, this is a wonderful restaurant that serves American cuisine at reasonable prices. Located in downtown John Day, the restaurant is within walking distance of local hotels and on-street parking is available nearby. The ambiance of the restaurant was casual and relaxed, and the staff was very prompt and friendly. For entree, I had the spinach salad with goat cheese, hazelnuts and raspberry dressing. The serving size was very generous, and I requested shrimp as add-on protein for the meal. Others ordered the standard burger and fries, and they raved about the onion rings! The only drawback I found was the large number of flies inside the restaurant. While we were eating, it was a constant battle to swat flies with your hands while trying to eat. I am unsure if it had to do with the region or the restaurant, but it gave me some concerns about hygienic standard. read more

The Jalapeno poppers was the highlight of my day. I never had anything like it. It was so crispy and flaky. The cream cheese filling was amazing and you could dip into any kind of sauce and still be delicious. My hats to the chef who incorporated this amazing recipe. Food is amazing. Grand re-opening today (7/15/23) after a fire next door shut them down for 3 months. Gave this restaurant a go on a recent trip to the area, based on the high praising reviews from my fellow Yelpies and I'd have to hands down agree. If you've never been to the John Day area of Oregon, then you should know it's a very small town (population under 2,000) which means you are darn lucky to even find a restaurant let alone one that could hold its own against restaurants in a bigger city. Decor is trendy and inviting. I didn't get a chance to ask our server, but there must be some kind of connection to yard gnomes because they were multiple sitings in strategic locations all over. They are taking the COVID protocols very seriously which is nice to see. Especially in a smaller community where I've often seen this kind of stuff slide. Menu had a good selection of a variety of wraps, burgers, sandwiches, etc. Easily something for everyone, including GF buns which I always appreciate and rarely find in more remote areas. I had the turkey sandwich which came with yummy jalapeno bacon (so how could you go wrong) and yummy fries with I'm pretty sure house made dipping sauces.. Kids menu had a decent selection and was fairly priced at $5. My younger son opted for the veggie/fruit tray with his Mac n cheese and I must say I've never seen such a nice spread of seasonal fruits & veggies. So inviting I happily ate what he chose not to. Our visit wasn't conducive to beer sampling, so I can't speak to these but they did appear to have a nice selection of different types to choose from. Also didn't have room for dessert, but they had a display case with multiple scratch made desserts that definitely looked like they'd be worth the calories. Staff was attentive & friendly. Restaurant was clean and tidy. Friday at Noonish they were totally full. Not sure when we'll next be through this way, but I'd absolutely come back if we did. Stopped here on the way to Enterprise Oregon. Absolutely worth the visit. The food is amazing and the waitress was very attentive and kind. Chicken wings were cooked to perfection and its the only place that i have been where the serve onle the drumb stick of the wing. Also had the goat cheese salad, turkey club sandwich and fries. I needed a destination for a 300 mile motorcycle run in early September and the town had to have a quality brewery so I picked John Day. Fantastic people there at 1188, they let me spread out the cool regional motorcycle map (they advertise in there and provide them free) so I could plan my route home. my server also recommended the nearby birding mecca of malheur national wildlife refuge. I had a burger which was amazing. this is beef country and the meat was high quality and cooked to perfection. Around The World allows you to sample all the types of beer they have on tap. since I was within walking distance to my motel (EVERYTHING is within walking distance in John Day) I drained all the glasses. they make wonderful beers. if you are passing through the area, DEFINITELY stop in, or set a course for John Day like I did. A small brewery on the main street, you really need to take the time to go and have a beer here. A nice selection awaits . Good beer, Pales to Darks, and friendly service as well as a decent menu. We had the Rueben with fries and a Caesar salad. Delicious. It's perfect for this small town and a good excuse to share your time with the locals. If you decide you like it but have to keep on down the road, they also serve it at the Central Hotel in downtown Burns, on Thursday's on the patio! read more

Companion and I both ordered the salmon and it was horrible. It was prepackaged frozen, very rubbery and tasteless. Served with tartar sauce. Vegetables were also frozen and had no seasoning. Carrots, green beans, bits of red pepper. The" cuban toast" what is a Half inch slice of white bread buttered and fried on one side. The food did not even come hot but that is no surprise since it's difficult to microwave frozen food without overcooking it. After eating at 3 restaurants in small towns of eastern Oregon like this one we concluded just stick to fried food and avoid fresh or healthy alternatives because they will sadly disappoint. read more

Holy moly amazing food alert! I've been on a road trip across the west and lo and behold I think I found the freshest food in this little town! It's so clean and cute inside and the service was OUTSTANDING. Fast, efficient and friendly! First off, try the strawberry or raspberry tea! They actually muddle the berries into the tea! I got the caprese salad with chicken and their homemade bread and it was divine. SO FRESH and you can tell they take pride in their food. My fiancé got the carne asada and beef street tacos and he was raving about them and how fresh they were. If you're stopping through John Day this is THE SPOT to eat. Amazing place in John Day, Oregon. Great space with innovative furniture made from reclaimed materials. Food was great. I loved the Pub Fries and the Nachos. The Tortilla on the Nachos are house made and it shows. The Salsa served with the Nachos was great. I had the Steak Tacos. The Steak comes from local grass fed cattle.
