Great burgers and the cherry cobbler a la mode is to die for . There's excellent camping nearby at Bates State Park. Closed on Tuesdays & Wednesdays but open from 11AM-8 PM. Great place, highly recommend it . read more

Have eaten here several times, the food is always really good. Last night we stopped in for the Egg Foo Yung, and what a surprise. It was unlike any I'd had before and so very good. My wife had the smoky tri-tip chili, it was so good we got a container of it to take home. We topped off diner with some of the home made pie y, we left Austin House full and satisfied. Give them a call to let them know you are coming, so then can make sure they have plenty of whatever special they are serving. read more

Okay as a convenience store if you get a good clerk. However, this time we stopped in for breakfast and ran into the single worst clerk I've ever experienced. Older women with short gray hair and glasses, who seemed like she was probably the owner. But holy cow she was the rudest, most unwelcoming person, so much so I legitimately hope this business fails so someone else can give it a try (it's a cool building/location). Just clearly hates people. We are very mellow, low maintenance folks, but as we tried to order she became increasingly more rude and aggressively impatient, especially with my three kids (aged 12-18, and very respectful). The whole interaction was so awkward and unpleasant we eventually just walked out. Honestly, drive the extra distance to eat in Prairie City or even the market in Unity. Not only was this disappointing, it put our whole family in a real funk for hours after. Avoid at all cost! read more

The food and service was fantastic! Desserts are homemade and just like my Mom used to make. The prices are very affordable. A real cheeseburger for $10. I highly recommend the smoked tri-tip sandwich on sourdough! And the dinner special will leave you full. read more

Delicious Ice Cream served with a smile. I was at the end of an 80 mile bike ride from Baker City to Bates, Oregon on a 97 degree day. The Ice Cream Was especially welcome. I came in for the buffalo burger, as advertised outside, but they were out of baffalo, oh no! Instead I had a regular burger, sweet potato fries, and a huckleberry milkshake. The burger and fries were pretty good. The milkshake was delish! Seriously good. As in, I will never drive by this place again, without stopping for a huckleberry milkshake. Even if I'm not hungry/thirsty. That good. Staff was friendly, and they had a very interesting collection of dry goods, native american artifacts, and books for sale, for me to peruse while I waited for my food (it was not a long wait). This place is pretty awesome! Husband and I stopped in a couple times after scouting the mountains. We had an Austin burger with fries, deep fried pickles and a huckleberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Everything was fresh and delicious! After several less than stellar experiences here...day before yesterday I was served what was possibly the oldest piece of cheesecake in existence...hard, dry, stale, tasted like freezer burn. There is NO WAY the owner woman who served me did not know exactly how old this was and she still gave it to a customer. As we were "just having dessert", we were not allowed to sit at a table. We were told to sit at the bar. On a previous visit we were seated at a wobbly table intentionally..."you're not having steak, so you'll be fine" ...the owner said to us. It was breakfast time. All it would have taken was a little shim...our coffee spilled over multiple times as the table was extremely wobbly. Annoyingly so...you couldn't even rest your wrist on the table. The owner actually scolded me for not eating all the mushrooms in my omelet... Apparently they were her last and she wasted them on me. I, unfortunately, could go on, but I've wasted enough time (and money) with Austin House. ++ read more

We were driving to John Day from Salt Lake City and drove by this very appealing cafe on the side of the road. We did a u-turn at the weigh station and came back to check it out. So glad we did! Met the owner and her grand daughter came out and played with and entertained our 4 yr old daughter. Real down to earth people. The reason most people read reviews is for the quality of food and service. Both are 5 stars here. Stop by, you won't be disappointed. read more

The waitress took some warming up to but by the end I really liked her. The food was excellent. The bar was awesome and the photos of the area on the walls were great. I had a burger and it was so good that I wished I had tried something else just to know if all the food was that well done. Gem of a place: general store and restaurant along with ice cream, bison burgers, select books and greeting cards. Great stop just outside Prairie City OR on US-26 (on the westbound side). Food was really good at a great price. The place is worth a look and a stop for a meal, snack, rest, refresher, visit. If you're between Bend/Redmond and Boise, make a point to check out Austin House. read more

Drive on by. The lady working had the personality of an downtrodden fish. Very cold and off putting. Me- "May I please use the restroom please?" (without looking at me) Her- "it's only for customers so by something first".....we bought my dad an ice cream, as we had intended to do, and my mom some caramel corn which turned out to be extremely stale. Helping someone with their most basic of needs ought not come at a price. With the possibly 3 visitors a day I feel rather certain my request wasn't really putting the poor dear out all that much. Also, she waited for me to order before telling me where the toilet was. The personality of a bull frog. Awful little place and awful woman. We'll drive on by next time. No doubt. read more

We were staying in Prairie City and there was not anything open for dinner on a Monday night. At the suggestion of the hotel receptionist we drove about 15 miles to Austin House in a beautiful forested area with little else around. Service and food were both quite good. Other people there commented that they too enjoyed their food. read more

We stopped in for a late lunch after the awesome Sumpter Valley Railway. The owner was not friendly upon arrival, kind of grouchy. There is no kids menu, just a verbal offer of chicken strips or fish and chips. Our three kids ordered a cheeseburger and grilled cheese to share from the regular menu and we were charged an extra $2 to split the grilled cheese. We asked for small kids' sodas for which we were also charged $2 each for little cups of soda. Overall the food, while simple, was good (I had a BLT, my husband the Cobb salad). The cold welcome and extra charges that seemed unnecessary clouded our lunch however. We've felt very welcome in other local eateries so this stop was disappointing. The place itself is charming with a beautiful wooden bar and lots of local books to explore. There are no other options right there so it's worth a stop if necessary but we found the restaurants in nearby Prairie City much friendlier and equally charming. read more
