I wandered into 116 Pulpito entirely by accident. As a vegetarian, I was en route to Maia, next door, which is reputed to have extensive vegetarian offerings reflective of culinary mastery. Alas, when I arrived, Maia was closed. It looked shut down -- though perhaps it's being remodeled? There were no signs posted by management informing anyone of a date of re-opening, and the windows were covered with paper. Your guess is as good as mine.
So, right next door stands 116-P, a tiny, friendly place with a handful of tables inside, a smaller handful outside, and perhaps five seats at the bar. 116-P also has quite a variety of vegetarian selections, so I accepted the fate that had befallen me at the late hour (after 10p) and joined the party that most likely occurs every night in this adorable space. The server suggested it would be 30-45 minutes for a table, so I figured it was time to order a mojito (with Havana Club 7 Year rum, my fav) and settle in. 116-P is in Olas Altas (Old Town), which is a gay-friendly, gay-open part of Vallarta. Two gay men sat at the bar enjoying a pizza and one was giving me eyes. I struck up a conversation with them while I was nursing my mojito, knowing all the while they were dying to know whether I was of like persuasion. (Eventually, I just asked if he wanted to know if I was gay, because it was obvious that he did. When I disappointed him, he persistently followed up with what I imagine is a common question in the community to ferret out those in abject denial: "Have you ever had sex with men?"). Let me be clear: this was hardly threatening and all done in good (and, for him, flirtatious) fun. I was happy to pass the time talking to friendly folk.
Let me be clear upfront: this rating is inflated because I liked the energy of 116-P. I liked the servers; I liked the bartender; I liked the patrons. The food, in my opinion, was just okay. The pizza looked great and it may very well be the best item on the menu, but as a vegetarian -- belieeeeeve me -- one gets more than his fill of pizza in Vallarta (Bella Napoli, which for some reason is not on Yelp, is the standout). I wanted to try something different. These are smaller plates - kind of like tapas - and priced accordingly. Everything was about US$4.
I started with the Greek Salad, then had the tempura vegetables, and finished with the veggie sliders. The standout was the tempura, and that may have been because of the delicious homemade sweet and sour sauce that accompanied it. The Greek Salad was just okay - a bit uninspired - and the veggie sliders were mushy and flavorless. The Havana Club 7-yr mojitos, however -- of which I had two -- were the best I've had in Vallarta (the mojitos at La Bodeguita del Medio, a Cuban bar and music venue on the Malecon are terrible). The total bill, before tip, was MXN$406 (exactly $20) - a bargain any way one slices or dices. To be sure, this is quality food and quality ingredients. Perhaps some tweaks are in order for vegetarian items? I don't know. I'd go back, though. I'd try the pizza. I'd perhaps try a different salad. I'd re-order the tempura. And I'd definitely enjoy those mojitos. read more
