I come from a family where sport has always been a priority, and I strongly value structure, respect, and learning through example. From early on, I felt that Coach Craig's approach can be quite harsh for children of this age. While young students need order and discipline, they are still learning and developing. Some days they will follow instructions well, and other days they may struggle. That is part of childhood. This stood out to me even more knowing that his own daughters attend the class. I fully support clear rules and disciplined training based on respect. However, I do not feel the coaching style always reflects the patience and child-focused approach needed when working with very young students. On several occasions, I observed my children being pulled by their kimonos in a rough manner. On another occasion, when one of my sons hesitated to follow instructions, he was spoken to in a forceful and intimidating tone. More recently, during an incident between my two children, one of them was shouted at in front of the class, which I felt was humiliating given that they are 6 years old. Structure, discipline, and consequences are important for everything. However, correction through shouting or intimidation does not feel appropriate for children of this age. In my view, discipline should build confidence, respect, and self-control, not fear. Because the emotional wellbeing and safety of children should always come first, I believe this situation deserves careful review.

On more than one occasion, the head coach addressed my children in an aggressive and intimidating manner. The tone, volume, and language used felt excessive for young students and created an atmosphere that seemed driven more by anger than constructive discipline. Working with children requires patience, emotional control, and professionalism. While correcting behaviour is necessary, children should never feel frightened, humiliated, or emotionally overwhelmed in a learning environment. At one point, the intensity of the interaction made us feel that our children's emotional wellbeing and sense of safety were at risk. No child should feel unsafe or intimidated in a place meant to build confidence and resilience. Martial arts training is meant to foster confidence, self-control, and respect. When communication feels harsh and intimidating, it undermines those values and can negatively affect a child's confidence and trust. Parents place trust in coaches to provide a safe, supportive environment. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend this club to other parents.
