#ThrowbackThursday - Remembering Hong Kong…read more.. Conveniently located at Nathan Road near the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, we decided to have our final meal in Hong Kong at Daikiya Japanese Restaurant. It's a very solid all-you-can-eat option with two thick notebooks of pictured items to choose from. The raw and the cooked, the fish and the meat, the meal and the dessert... Sashimi - The usual suspects abound (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, etc.), but they also have hokkigai (surf clam), amaebi (sweet shrimp), Hokkaido hotate (scallop), and nishin (Japanese herring with roe). Served on a bed of ice and decorated with artificial flowers, each platter was well-plated... and delicious! Nigiri - There are plenty of winners here, but let's focus on the one that topped the list - Grilled Scallop with Crab Oil and Garlic. Seared enough to give that burnt flavor, dabbed with crab oil, then topped with roasted garlic... Need I say more? This was the highlight of our meal and, yes, my younger daughter and I had this over and over and over! Worthy runners-up - Grilled Flatfish and Prawn with Black Fish Roe. Rolls - An assortment of maki (sushi roll), temaki (hand roll), gunkan-maki (ship roll), and sashimi rolls was on the menu as well, but we were able to try only a few. The Mango and Soft-Shell Crab Roll was too small and had more cucumber than anything else. There simply were better options to be had. Grilled - Surf and Turf! Shrimp, scallop, oyster, lamb chop, beef, chicken, pork, and even pineapple. The best dish was the Sautéed Diced Beef with Garlic. Perfectly seasoned and cooked medium, these beef chunks were so tender and tasty! Dessert - Gotta save room for some (or all) of these - mochi, macaron, ice cream, tiramisù, brownie, crème brûlée, fruit, nut, and so on. We indulged in their special Milk Top, which had a limit of one flavor per person. We tried the Romantic Moment and Green Tea Harmony, which had soft-serve ice cream, red bean/paste, mochi balls, jellies, and rice crispies. The only way to cap off an AYCE! After restocking on calories, we were ready to head back to the hotel and then to HKIA. Daikiya was just what the doctor ordered to fill up our bellies before leaving. We totally enjoyed our stay in Hong Kong, but we had to wrap up our adventure. It was time to say goodbye... for now...

No wonder HK is the paradise for foodies! 1) The menu was extensive, almost overwhelming (there are 2 books), including sashimi boat, nigiri, tempura, seared fish, hand rolls, California rolls, desserts, anything you can think of! My eyes lit up when I opened the menu like I saw gold. 2) The food quality was very good for the price we paid. Everything raw was fresh and chilled and the rest were all served hot and steamy. 3) Service was super efficient and courteous too. They tried to fulfill all your requests. 4) It can be packed so book an early table. 5) You won't break your bank here to be able to enjoy a quality AYCE. We were all so full at the end. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in HK! I hope they stay in business for a while and keep the quality up! **** I heard the other locations don't taste as good so not every Daikiya is the same.

Last call is 2:30 and we got there around 2pm on a Sunday. We had wait a little for the bar to clear up. It's a very small restaurant with only maybe capacity for 20 people or so. We ordered a sashimi lunch set and a tempura set and man it was such a great deal! My sashimi set includes almost 10 pieces of assorted fish like yellowtail, maguro, salmon, imitation crab (don't care), but hey they put amaebi and toro on my plate too and that was quite a nice surprise! Not only the sashimi was plentiful and amazing, my set also came with the steamed egg, miso soup and some pickled vegetables! The tempura was pretty good too and I liked the fried fish, very flavorful and tender! The sashimi set cost around $220 and the tempura a little less than $200. The prices are reasonable for the portions and the quality! Very great deal! Just come here earlier and be prepared to wait.

Boyfriend and I wanted to have a more pricey dinner so we are on vacation…read more This is a really cute, small restaurant. They closed at 10:30pm and we showed up at about 8:30pm. One of the waitress approached us and apologized that they were busy and no seats available. She walked around and came back to tell us that there should be seating at 9pm, and so we told her, "no problem, we will be back then." We walked around the block and went to the mall to kill time. When we got back about 8:50pm, we waited another 15 minutes, which was fine. We could tell it was busy and every seat in the place was taken (they had group celebrating a birthday-- they offer birthday cake!) By the time we were seated, half the place was getting up to leave. Every staff member starts their sentence with "I am sorry.." which they have nothing to be sorry for!-- but just could be their way of being polite. The waitress who took our order was an older lady. She's the one who approached us when we first arrived, who seated us, and took our order. Her English was pretty good, with a very thick accent (of course) but you can understand her. If you couldn't she will repeat herself or try to say it in a different way. She offered many great selections!-- including which needs to be dipped into their special soy sauce and regular soy sauce. We had sashimi of: baby tuna, tuna, salmon, sea urchin, yellowtail.. and a few others I can't remember. And one tuna roll. Their wasabi is delicious! Everything is fantastic! They offer coke, sprite, and orange juice, along with different types of alcohol. The staff is always busy, literally hurrying along. They come over and wipe down the soy sauce drops that are on the table. They switch out your plates once they start to look a little too used, and always makes sure your drinking glass is full. One of the best services I've ever had! I did have to ask for the check, but maybe they do that so you can enjoy your stay and not feel like you need to leave. Our bill was just a little under $250 USD, but that was expected with all the sushi we had, and just what we were looking for. We highly recommend this place!

What really sets this place apart from other omakase restaurants is their service. When you walk in, you really feel like you are back at home. They even helped me charge my phone! Atmosphere: cozy, 14 person joint. There are 6 seats at the chef's bar, and another few tables. Casual, relaxed, and very intimate. Food: WOW. So special. Let me start with the first course, which was a seaweed with sashimi dish in a delightfully sweet soy based sauce. Next came the sashimi course, full of fish I never even heard of, but was pleasantly surprised at the fresh, and delightful texture. Third course was an amazing mackerel dish in a sesame sauce, straight from the chef's home town. Let me say, this was the highlight of the evening. Our next courses of sushi were on point, with tuna, toro, Uni, kampachi, etc. just amazing! I would definitely come back, especially for this fantastic food at a reasonable price for this experience. The couple make this experience even better, they're so welcoming you could come by yourself and be happy! In fact, a Japanese man came by at around 9:30 to start his dinner and they seemed like the oldest of friends!

They will show you different bottles, tell you about the different tastes and of course the price. I like this concept. Food here is excellent, very fresh and innovative, watching the Chef at his work is always a treat. You can always order a la Carte but I prefer the Omakase. Having the Omakase will set you back HK$ 1000 which is really good value for money, taking into account the high quality!

The sashimi and sushi are ordered as you go. But what was odd is that it's for each piece versus two pieces per order we get in the US. So it surprised us that one piece came out on a plate. We saw other guests with a large bowl or platter of sashimi so they must have ordered a quantity of 6 or 10? Anyway all the ordering is done via the app and you can see what you've ordered. They only let you order so much at a time. You can place an order but it will be paused until you queue comes up again. A bit getting used to. We lost track of wha we ordered, what we ate and what is in queue. The food is good, the price is good so no real complaints otherwise. Place was busy so make a reservation to be safe.

It is everywhere in the island, yet so few are at the level of Deluxe Daikiya (極尚大喜屋日本料理) where most everything is surprisingly good. And by good, I mean AYCE good. But for the untrained palate who is willing to pay 200HKD, it may as well be an omakase of young chefs shucking every raw oyster and dicing up the cuts of seemingly fresh fish for the masses to enjoy. For a place that commands unlimited quantities a la carte, they have done a great job of hiding the fact they operate as one food wise. Unlike it's sister restaurant (#2) just around the corner, the scenery here is oddly more upscale and intimate. Everything from the lights to the contemporary decor feels like this is truly a more "deluxe" version of the Daikiya family. The only disruption of course, are the loud mouthed patrons, which is then followed by equally loud if not louder wait staff, who are moving swiftly to keep up with the pace of food coming in and out. From sushi alone, there is a lot to appreciate. The cuts of sashimi, in particular the salmon, mackerel, and hamachi are super tender and have no hint of fishiness. I was and still am surprised at the creaminess of the uni, which is really tasty in handroll form as well as nigiri style. I was also reasonably impressed with their cuts of raw scallop and their sweet ebi shrimp. I won't lie and say I enjoyed the tuna as much, but no decent grade of tuna would ever come out of a place like this without costing at least $400-500HKD a head. Another surprise: Their handrolls. They arrive nicely packed with just enough rice to add to the palate, but also feature a lot of great items (shout out to the soft shell crab!) that make them stand out. The crispy nori on the outside is a nice bite, especially when it's freshly made. Don't wait till it gets cold, that's a straight newbie mistake. In terms of the cooked food, there is so much that I couldn't possibly cover all of it. But the highlights would include their garlic sizzle, faux-wagu beef cubes served with a side of dashi infused soy. The creamy seafood mentai pasta is also tasty, but should be left for people who are not into the raw as it is a lot more filling than the portion shows. Also, get on the bandwagon for their tuna and/or hamachi jaw / collar, which is grilled and quite succulent given how little meat there is. The AYCE experience in HK is far from the Todai / Minado buffet auras of the US. Instead, it stands on its own for good execution on a unlimited scale and is worth the money ($198-298 for lunch/dinner) for anyone who is crazy about Japanese cuisine and a seafood addict. Someone, like me. __________ (#1) For you non-gluttons: All you can eat. (#2) Daikiya of Nathan Road: https://www.yelp.com/biz/SZEeyBhHE3NaistN-Plogw
