I've worked both in emergency ambulance services, as well as the hospital side of things. I'm giving this a 3-star review for lack of a better opinion. I come to HK multiple times a year for business and this time I happened to get sick with a lung infection, and suddenly in the middle of the night I lost my ability to speak and started coughing vehemently. Looked up emergency services and this was one of the closest. It's a huge hospital and the facilities are pretty clean. But the emergency department nurse told me there's a wait time of AT LEAST 8 hours. That's really the longest I've seen someone have to wait. I understand an emergency department needs to triage, and yes, of course there were cases that were more critical than me. But I also expect a public hospital to be staffed well enough to not have patients waiting for over an hour or two. The nurse suggested that I try a private hospital, which I did, not wanting to wait (at least) 8 hours and miss my next day's business meetings. So I took her advise, and waited about 10 minutes at a private hospital close by, got examined for less than 5 minutes from the on-duty physician, and was on my way out of there with medicine in hand (antibiotics, cough medicine, and masks to avoid getting others sick) in under 1hr. I'm sure having a couple additional on-duty physicians to take care of cases that are quick and simple will go a long way to quickly solve this issue.

Got antibiotics and pain Med with instructions to return the next day. Had to pay my bill. I returned the next day and had to be admitted due to finger not any better. I was seen by an orthopedic surgeon . He did surgery that same day! I had to stay two nights for IV antibiotics! Great vegetarian meals! I was released And had to pay my bill. I continued taking oral antibiotics and pain Med with instructions to clean and change dressing daily. Went back for a follow up and my finger was healing! Dr Lam and hospital staff are caring, friendly and wonderful. Good skilled nurses. I was in a three bed room and I think it's wonderful that they let significant others stay with their loved ones through the night.

The fact that you seem to find them everywhere also gives me a sense that its medicine on the cheap. So you might be wondering why I actually bothered to go in the first place. That's because for one of my jobs I actually had to go to their centres for a pre-joining medical check. Needless to say their centre was big and clean, felt more like a showroom rather than a medical centre if I'm honest. I was led in to conduct the tests and they were extremely careful about what they did the whole way, despite the fact that they must all have to go through plenty of these humdrum tests all day long. The tests were completed very quickly and I noted that they had a dental practice at the same location. I thought to myself that since I'm here I might as well get that done as well; they actually had a place for me immediately and by the next hour I had it cleansed and looked at. All this brought to me the reality of the situation: we may all want a family GP who talks to us for half an hour and attends family weddings. The thing is though, nowadays we want good, cheap and quick medical service and UMP is right up there.

He was in our hotel room in 1.5 hours and saw my husband there, without us having to get in a taxi, travel to the medical center, register, and wait to see a dr there. This was SO much better for my husband, who had a fever and did not want to get out of bed. Dr. Kung was efficient yet thorough, and gave my husband some antibiotics as well as fever-reducing and anti-nausea medication. He also left his card for us to call him directly if my husband got worse. It wasn't cheap but it was so worth it to have a house call in our hotel room. We were very pleased with Dr. Kung and the house-call service offered.

This is made worse in HK if you do need GP help, and are an ex-pat. It can be daunting to go to an Chinese doctor, or difficult to find an English speaking doctor. If you are in this situation, I would recommend OT&P. They are primarily a family practitioner service, with a number of specialists doctors, running four clinics across HK Island. Think of them as your GP back in blighty, but with more doctors, more appointment availability, better healthcare. To be fair to the UK's NHS, OT&P are private, so you will need to pay or produce your medical cards. Dr Trodd at the Wan Chai practice is particularly good, I have always found his patient care excellent and recommend him highly. He also has an amazing view out of his office, so if you are uncomfortable being prodded and poked, you can always have a look out of the window across the harbour to TST. Just a few details for your digestion; the clinic is an hours clinic, as in they only work "working" hours. If you need out of hours care, you'll have to call 999 (there is some out of hours care for obstetrics). They are a dispensing clinic, so all the prescription meds are on site. No trip to Mannings for you then. There is also a lot of on-site testing that they can do. Personally, I have always found it very easy to get an appointment, but fortunately, I very rarely go. They don't look fancy at all but, they are sanitary inside the wards and keep it very clean and safe. For skills- since this is a teaching hospital, they are 2nd or 3rd best in all the world. ( I got this info by word of mouth - check into it yourself ) If you decided to give birth at Matilda, but something goes wrong, you send up at Queen Mary Anyway. This is because the private hospitals don't have the materials to deal with such situations. Now, in my opinion, the bedside manner is just awful. Every exam is so "routine" for them that you are just a number. So when you go to appointments, have your list of questions, and be ready to take quick mental notes or make chicken scratch on paper. But if you go in there knowing this, and politely but firmly tell them your way, they will be fine - usually. Most doctors and nurses speak great English. Some, not so much. So find someone to communicate with well. Some doctors are nicer than others. Getting them on the phone is horrible. Just visit. You will NOT have the same doctor each time so get yourself a private doctor or midwife for piece of mind. The labour ward is horrible. Women moaning due to contractions - 8 beds per space separated by curtains. It's not horrible in terms of care. To me, it's horrible because you're there alone without your friends or company to help you cope. You can't move to the delivery ward until 3cm dilation. The delivery ward is efficient. You finish your dialation and you have a baby. My delivery doctor was like "Don't touch my towels" LOL Post maternity ward is what I like best. You may have too many people in the room but the food is better, and you feel much better after labour and delivery. It's like the labour ward in terms of set up. You are expected to take care of your own child so you are "bedded -in" with your baby unless there's a medical reason that he should be in the nursery. So in this ward, there is almost always a baby crying somewhere. You stay here for 3 days after. Anyway, that's generally how the maternity ward works at QMH. The medical centre at Wan Chai is particularly good, primarily due to the excellent service from Dr. Yiu. Whilst this is quite a "local" feeling practice, Dr. Yiu's and his staff's English is perfect, so don't feel intimidated to come here as an ex-pat. I always find it very easy to get an appointment here within a couple of hours of calling, and once at the surgery, the wait to see the doctor is usually short. The consultations are thorough, so you can be confident that you are getting the best care. The services they offer include; general and specialist consultation, health checks, some minor outpatient procedures, inoculations, and travel health advice.On site, they also have x-ray facilities, and a dispensing pharmacy, so you don't have to go elsewhere for your prescriptions. Should you require any other specialist care, Dr Yiu will refer you as required. UMP accepts a number of medical insurance schemes, both personal and employer, so it is possible to visit and have the costs paid directly by your insurer.
