If you are looking for a used car in Hong Kong there are a couple of major "centres"- Emax at…read moreKowloon Bay, Wanchai Convention Centre and one more in Mongkok. these are all individual dealers grouped into one location and there are no blanket warranties made for cars sold there- buying a car from one dealer may give you different warranties from buying from the next place. That's where DCH actually differs. DCH is a trading group in HK with a huge motor division; they are the official importer for a number of brands with one of the biggest service centres. In the past they had sold their trade in vehicles through smaller dealerships but this practice has changed with the introduction of this Used Car Centre. These are all vehicles which have been either taken part-exchange or used by the DCH group, with that it comes with warranties that differs depending on the vehicle but it is their guarantee that matters. Their guarantee is that the vehicles have not been clocked and in anyway masked for problems- this is a breakthrough locally as in the past buying used always had its inherent dangers and nothing was ever guaranteed. The cars do vary in brands, so they stock not only the brands they deal with but other vehicles too. One of the apparent things that should hit you is that the cars have not been prepped in anyway, they sit there the way came in which depending on how you look at it may be a good thing or bad thing. The prices are also on the high side with no room for negotiation, but again you are buying a peace of mind that money can't buy else where. One major criticism with the place is that its a big place and its difficult to get to speak to someone if you are interested. Again, that may be a good thing in the sense that there is no one to bug you whilst you take your time. To sum up, if you are in the market for a second hand car you should go take a look here.

Cyclon car wash in Tsuen Wan is one of a rarity in Hong Kong: its both a car wash and full service…read moregarage at the same time. They may even organize your MOT testing for you. Whilst this may be a common feature overseas, in a land where space is a premium this car wash certainly sets itself apart. Judging from the number of customers on a weekend you will see that they do their job well (note: it is not recommended that you go at the weekend as the queues are long and the quality does tend to suffer). The car wash for a saloon currently costs 138 which is a fair price given how labour intensive the process is- at one pointed I counted over 8 people working on a car. They also go above and beyond the car where they would clean not only the visible parts, but the panel gaps as well as doing some very rudimentary checks on water levels and tire pressure. They offer other cleaning and waxing services which again from past experience is well worth the money they charge (they are a little bit more expensive than their competitors). Maintenance wise they have a full workshop that will do both emergency repairs and routine maintenance. The staff are helpful and certainly better than what I have experienced elsewhere where most people simply try to fleece you to part away with as much cash as possible.

A few days ago I was filling up here and I cast myself back thinking: when was the first time I…read morecame here to fill up? Fact is: I don't remember. Why? Well a) its a petrol station there really isn't anything to remember and b) its one that I come to most frequently. The second one demands more elaboration, I have been coming to this station for some 12 years now and there is a good reason why I come here all the time: I reckon this is one of the best filling stations in town. Its convenient: Its situated in Prince Edward on Boundary Road- this is the main thoroughfare from West Kowloon to East Kowloon so you really can't miss it. Moreover, it is very well connected to road going northbound (Shatin) and southbound (TST) so you really can go anywhere from here. Its big: Hong Kong is a small place and filling stations can sometimes be one that's been carved into the side of a building complex. This one is a proper size one, with some 4 lanes of vehicles that could fill up simultaneously. It has a proper shop that sells everything from washer liquids to bags of rice so it will feed both you and the car. It has everything: You can take your time and pump up your tires here; plenty of space to do it too and there's a tap down the back so people come and wash their cars here. Need I say more?

I had called around the area for quotes and this was better with everyone else's plus a friend had his car fixed here before so I picked this one. They immediately knew where the problem was when I explained. He explained everything he was going to do and made sure I understood and agreed with. Honest, fast, knowledgeable and easy to deal with. I appreciated that he didn't try to up sell and just said exactly whats needed to be done and nothing more. Its a family owned garage and their service was great, they came and picked up the car in the morning and returned it when I was going home after work. I didn't even need to get to their shop! I would recommend this family owned business as the place to go if you need to have some car fixing or service. Its an overdue review, so sorry for late review but better now then never.

Carparks are actually quite difficult to comment on in the sense that there is very little to talk…read moreabout- they are functional buildings and rarely is there any particular flair that goes with something as bland as rows and rows of spaces. This is no different- the no.4 car park at Chep Lap Kok International Airport is, as its name suggests, a car park. So why am I writing about it? That's because this is the carpark that less people know about. Everybody usually heads to the no.1 and 2 open air ones because that's the first one you come across when you leave the highway. Its only for short term parking though and in most cases it is filled with people doing quick pick ups and on busy days its chaotic to say the least. This multistoried one is different in both sense- its covered (great for Hong Kong's rainy season), it has a lot more spaces and this is the one you have to go to if you are parking long term. I have had to do a lot of pick ups this summer because of travelling family members and the advantage of using this carpark is that on the (2) level there is a pick up point that leads you directly (via a short walk through an air conditioned passage) into the arrival hall. That spares you having to wait for the lifts which you do at no.1 & 2. Its also a much shorter walk if you have to pick someone up from arrival hall A- those who fly from CLK will know what I mean. Just remember that if you have to park long term you may have to approach the parking attendants first.

At one point in time this carpark was the focal point of people coming onto the island- that's…read morebecause the Star Ferry pier used to be right across the road, with Queen's Pier right next to it. These days its does feel a bit isolated in the sense that its in the middle of nowhere (without nothing around it anyways) but this has long been one of the most popular carparks for those coming to Central. You might not know it but this building was actually built in the 60s along with the structures around it like the City hall and if you look carefully it bears the hallmark for post war design (just like the City Hall). Compared to modern carparks the parking spaces are a little tight here as they were designed before the days we all started jumping into SUVs. The roof of this carpark is also sight to behold- this is the best place to truly appreciate how far Hong Kong has come in becoming an international financial heart- you will be able to see all the buildings in Central surrounding you like a canyon and many films, magazines have shot scenes from here. In a sign that its moving on with modern trends, a number of spaces on the G/F are now fitted with plugs for electric vehicles- that's something they certainly would not have thought of back in the 1960s. The parking fees here are steep though they are still the cheapest in Central- that means I will still park here as long as they don't tear it down.

There are a couple of factors that makes a good carpark: good access, wide spaces and good signage. This place doesn't do well in any of those factors despite the fact that this place only opened its doors around 15 years ago. The carpark is spread over some 4 levels with 1 level dedicated exclusively to monthly pass users whilst another level is now blocked off as a used car sales area. The monthly fees have been rumored to be exorbitant so much so that monthly owners have been scared away by and large; leaving this carpark largely under used. Further controversy was brought when the management company leased out the carpark as a used car sales area without permission from the Lands Department. The sales floor is quite small and it focuses on older and cheaper cars as opposed to the other used car centres in Hong Kong. The access to the carpark is through two chopstick narrow bridges which is counter-intuitive at best. On every level you will find that the first swaths of parking spaces are out of use because there simply isn't enough space for two lanes of traffic to pass. Signage is poor and you are always trying to find your way in and out of the place and the wait for elevators down is glacial at best.
