鉄板焼銀座すみかわ - This is that special salmon I mentioned in my review. Basically like a transsexual male salmon! So delicious!

This is a special sushi experience that also comes at a special price. By special price, I mean it…read moreis expensive. Sushi Ginza Onodera, with the first opening in Ginza Japan in 2013 and other locations in Hawaii, Paris, Shanghai, LA and NYC following since, is a unique, high-end, exclusive, private, sushi or teppanyaki experience designed for those with sushi dollars to burn and an interest in broadening your palette when it comes to what you think you know about sushi and teppanyaki. This also explains the line up of Bentleys we have seen on the street outside this place as we walk by this spot every day. I think Sushi Ginza Onodera and Teppanyaki Ginza Onodera are in the same location, are the same business entity, but depending on what route you are going might determine then where you are seated in the restaurant and are two different experiences. I think this restaurant brand is actually more known for teppanyaki. We made a reservation. We were casually dressed. Restaurant is located inside the bright blue painted Hotel LBP. Take the elevator you see just to the right of the hotel entrance/corridor at the street level up to Sushi Ginza Onodera. You arrive to a quite, intimate spot, very exclusive and simply decorated. We were greeted and welcomed by hospitable staff. We were eating sushi, so upon our arrival, we were escorted to a sushi bar that could seat about 10 people that was constructed of white washed woods and was very clean/uncluttered. There is no case with fish on display at normal sushi bars, this is not your normal sushi experience. A sushi chef and his assistant arrive after you make a selection of one of the three pre-set menu's offered. You do not pick individual sushi, you select one of three menu's that are already put together. We went with the menu in which the chef puts together his best personal selections that night. We ordered sake to get us started. Throughout the evening, we are eyed and overseen by a staff member who is virtually standing at our shoulder to offer a napkin, explain a piece of sushi that has been presented, warm our tea, fill our sake glass, etc. They are dressed in black suits and ties, which seems all very formal and also all very "Men in Black," short the black Ray-bans they wear in the actual movie. Their English is 50/50, but they are all very kind. After ordering our pre-set menu selection, the sushi chef shows up in front of us and starts working. He seems friendly, he speaks limited English, seems like a maestro and is working so effortlessly, so delicately, so precisely on preparing each and every piece we will consume. Delicately prepare, grind out fresh wasabi, make it picture perfect, present to us to eat. One piece at a time. Repeat. Delicately prepare, grind out fresh wasabi, make it picture perfect, present to us to eat...repeat. Drink some sake...repeat. The experience of watching this sushi chef prepare our meal was mesmerizing. He was so exact, he was so caring with each sliver of fish, he was so precise. I could sit there and watch it all day long. It his apparent that he is really an expert at this craft. The experience of eating here takes a bit of time. We maybe had 10-15 different sushi selections and each seemed like sushi items we had never consumed. Silver fish, needle fish, monk fish liver, the rare rare rare trans-sexual like salmon that is like 1 out of every 10,000 salmon on the planet in which a male gives birth to a salmon...we only understood about 10% of what our "Men in Black" host was trying to explain about this, but we took a photo of the license associated with this one fish we were consuming. Each piece of sushi was unique and beautiful and made with our sushi chef's exquisite skill. They make the wasabi fresh by rigorously spinning out the wasbi root right there on a board in front of you and continually does so throughout the night as more wasabi is needed. When he then pulled out the one fancy sword that is used to only cut tuna....I think I might be dreaming and this is not really happening. Just a very interesting, very special sushi experience. I feel like our repertoire of sushi knowledge has grown exponentially since dining at Sushi Ginza Onodera. Our experience for two, including two bottles of sake came to $4750HKD. We are glad we went and absolutely understand how special this chef and this experience is. It is an absolute 5 Star Yelp experience, but more due to quality, experience and exclusivity versus value and quantity. My husband and I indicated that we would come back sometime to enjoy the teppanyaki experience, but we most likely would not be back for the sushi experience. It is a pricey bill for two on a random Saturday where I am in a t-shirt and my husband is in flip-flops (I think you can be super casual or dressed up, either or). We appreciate the experience, but the cotton might be a bit too tall for our preferred sushi expectations.

Looking on Yelp for "sushi," we found Fukumura in the same shopping structure and although it did not have any reviews, we thought we would go. SO GLAD WE DID! My husband eats sushi and I eat sashimi as a general rule. In both situations, we agreed that this meal was fantastic! Not just kind of fantastic, but "holy crap this fish is so fresh I should slap it" kind of fantastic. The sashimi scallops and sweet shrimp were so delicate and sweet and simple perfection. The tuna, the flounder and the salmon were equally perfect and cut in large fat sizes. We sat at the actual sushi bar and were able to see all the cool rolls and items that the sushi chefs were preparing. Quite the art amongst this group of sushi chefs! We ordered veggie tempura and a bottle of cold sake. Cold sake was presented in a cool serving vessel and kept pefectly chilled until the last drop. The staff was so accomodating and on it at the completion of a dish, refilling of tea or reorder of more sushi. A lot of staff, regularly available, welcoming and helpful, genuinely glad that we were there and happy for our business. The restaurant is not large, seating only 50. It does have a small sushi bar that sits about 10 and also a teppanyaki bar that sits about 10 too. Then there is the small dining room and also appeared to have a private back room of some sort. The low ceilings and the llight wooded walls make the place have a warm feel, but there is no sitting on the ground or anything here in some traditional Japanese spots. This is not a bustling area at 6PM on a Sunday, very dead really. We think this place and the restaurants all around it must have a busy work crowd during mid week lunches and such, for again it was dead when we showed up. The whole plaza around Fukumura appeared dead. But don't let this fool you, this restaurant was great and we would defiinately go back. It is expensive, so be warned. We walked out with a bill around $2200HKD for just the two of us, but you get what you pay for. They do have a $600HKD sashimi sampler that included tuna, salmon, shrimp, scallop, toro and something else. We tend to over indulge when it comes to sushi, so our bill can get out of hand. So if you are not getting out of hand, neither will your bill.

There are bar seats as well as regular tables, but none have the actual teppan tables in front of you and there is no chef cooking directly within eye sight unless you are at the bar seats. My group of four came for dinner and decided to hop onto the bar seats. Our server was friendly and didn't mind explaining some of the menu items to us. There are set dinners as well as a la carte options. We opted to mix and match so that the four of us could share everything ordered. It was a good idea because there were just so many things that looked appetizing! With premium cuts of steak, scallops, seared foie gras, vegetables, fish, + chicken, our stomach was thanking us. The chilled tomato with citrus soy sauce was our favorite appetizer while the mixed greens salad had a delectable creamy and slightly spicy dressing. We had no room for dessert but will consider it next time. Overall a nice casual restaurant that knows how to grill.

All sets come with a salad, rice, soup and a choice of teppanyaki meat (salmon, shrimp, scallops, various beef, chicken, pork and etc). They also have really good dipping sauces here! This place is always busy since it's in New Town Plaza so I just come on weekdays. On weekends, you'll have to wait a while to get a table and it's not that worth it. I usually get their beef and their shrimp since they do it quite well here. Everything is very flavourful and don't forget to get the mushroom rice instead of the plain one!

The menu is kinda restricted and the sets start at $700 per person! They all are very heavily seafood oriented. I'm not such a huge seafood person and I try to avoid beef so I decided to save a little $ and make my own a la Carte dinner - with chicken. Steak, tofu eggplant, veggies and special mintaku salmon roe fried rice. Later on I found out since everyone else ordered beef the chef shared the beef with everyone even though two of us didn't order beef and did a la carte. That was nice, so I got to sample a tiny bit of Wagyu as well as a bit of beef roll. Nothing else was shared though. Highlights; - that Wagyu beef is ... phenomenal to say the least. Just amazing amazing meat. - the onion crunchy sauce they serve the beef with is also really good - grilled chicken steak is really good, tender, and the green onion crunchy garlic topping really works well. - the special fried rice is worth it. - the tofu ... was amazing. That was the surprise. It comes with six huge pieces and they put something that seems like gochujang and green onions on it. Everyone wanted some. - veggies and the eggplant were both good too I would say this place is for very special occasions when you want to go all out and price is absolutely no objection.

You might feel a little lost, a little disorientated by the light maybe, because for the last few hours you've been on a food journey unlike anything you've ever experienced before. But don't get me wrong, it's everything you've wanted to experience and more. First off, a little context: Wa San Mai is huge - it's like its own world on the 22nd floor, covering over 10,000 square feet. There is a teppanyaki side, and a sushi/standard dining side, and another area for settling the stomach. A really wanted me to try the flying fish sashimi here first - mainly because they use the bones and head to make 'chips' more than the sashimi itself - so he asked the server straight off the bat. The server said that the fish hadn't been flown in from Japan yet, but should be arriving in less than half an hour. I'm not sure whether this guy was making Wa San Mai seem more decadent than it already is, but it worked - I was impressed. Of course, we ordered this on top of the mountain of food we had ordered in our set, and were not disappointed - incredibly fresh, and with bone 'chips' that offered a completely different texture to the smooth sashimi. As for our set... hedonism at its gastronomic extreme. To start, we had an abalone and shrimp amuse bouche. Followed by teppanyaki scallop, wagyu steak, sake clam soup, and lobster two ways - teppanyaki and soup. Everything was a masterful show of knifeskill and grill in front of us, by an expert teppanyaki chef. He later refused our cheers of Sake because he said he would be driving a motorcycle home that night, but we made sure to tell him how appreciative we were. After all this, how could we do without the totally unnecessary but traditional ending of fried rice? After fried rice and nearly collapsing onto the hot steel into a food coma, we were taken to another room where we were allowed to indulge in green tea and sesame ice cream for as long as we pleased, accompanied ten minutes later by tea and coffee. This gave A and I a good chance to talk about how delicious and ridiculous that meal was. Sidenote: they've also got those Japanese toilets that have warm up the seats and... um, intimately clean.
