I dropped by mid afternoon on a weekday and there was only 1 person ahead of me. Service was not great - they didn't seem that interested in taking orders and I had to wait a bit until they were settled and ready. To their credit, the bubble waffle came out quickly and hot - the first few bites were crispy on the outside but almost a bit too hard. I only ate about 1/3 of it. It was nothing special. Too bad because it is a local joint and my go-to when I visit Hong Kong as I generally stay in the same area.

After eating 永華麵家, we ended up coming here to continue our Wanchai food crawl. There was no lines so it only took around 10 minute or less for my order to be ready. I love that freshly prepared smell. Crispy on the outside and soft/chewy on the inside with just a hint of sweetness.... and of course the aroma of egg! Just the way I like mine!

They are known for their tomato soup base and you can choose the type of noodles and there's various toppings to choose from. I ordered their tomato macaroni soup with beef and spam. The soup is on the sour side and I would have liked it to be a little more savory and hearty. The macaroni was a little overcooked but that's basically Hong Kong cafe style. It came with 2 half pieces of spam, one of it was overcooked and dry, the other one seemed undercooked. The beef was decent texture wise but it didn't have much flavor. We also ordered their toast with condensed milk and the toast was over toasted and too crunchy to my liking. Overall, it's an unique experience but don't be expect the food to be superb. You also won't get over the top service but everyone was very courteous and friendly.

They have benefited greatly from the Central crowd and serve to be a destination for locals (and tourists). However, DPDs are endangered and it's important that we keep them alive. Expect a wait during most mornings and afternoons, as folks are here to enjoy their unpretentious food. Most folks are here for their tomato soup, but specifically the tomato macaroni with beef (蕃茄鮮牛肉通粉) and their crispy buttered up buns (奶油脆脆). Often times I like to switch their classic dish up with instant noodle (蕃茄牛肉麵) and the crispy lemon honey buns (檸蜜脆脆). Together they go hand-in-hand with a milk tea or lemon tea for a complete meal. If tomato is not your thing, than skip this place. Even as an authentic DPD / Hong Kong cafe, they lack a lot of variety. For the non-tomato folks, they have breakfast items like ham, eggs, luncheon meat, and corned beef for around $30HKD. It's not a bad option, but it's not worth waiting in line for just that alone. Even though the staff is not the most well versed in English, there are plenty of expats here who have made it work. Their menu is in both Chinese and English and the seating is extremely tight, outdoor (#1) only, and not conducive to groups. While the lines are fierce in the morning, they are usually moving quickly since many folks are doing takeout. At most, it's 30-35 folks at a time. Even though they are technically in Central, the best way to get here is to get off at the Sheung Wan MTR station and walk directly from the A2 exit. They close at 4:30 every day and are closed on Sundays. Expect to spend around $40HKD for a bowl of tomato'y goodness and just know it's cash only. __________ (#1) It is a dai pai dong after all.

Hong Kong cart noodles probably dates back to a long time ago but it is definitely a historic, cultural food that is a staple of Hong Kong. I imagine back in the days, people would roll out their carts with options as toppings on their noodles and people will line up to eat it. It's so popular that there are cart noodles everywhere in Hong Kong. In Cantonese it is called che zai meen. Literally translated into, cart noodles. The particular store I love is located in causeway bay on Jaffe road. You can smell the toppings brewing from the kitchen. You sit down usually sharing a table between strangers given space is limited, (these joints are always packed,) and you are given a piece of paper to choose your toppings on your noodles a la carte style. Kind of like dim sum! There is everything from vegetables to pork blood, intestine, curry fish balls, beef tendons, tripe etc. These toppings all have their own flavour and is added on top of your noodles of choice. You can choose either wide, thick or thin, rice or flour noodles and your soup base is also an option as well. Usually spicy, clear or beef broth. Everything is picked to your preference and then it is served in a hot bowl with your noodles piping hot with exactly the toppings you chose in the soup base you wanted. Doesn't that sound lovely! Love cart noodles. It's the Hong Kong part of me and I am proud of it!

Located conveniently across the street from the Wanchai MTR, Exit A Lockhard Road, there is a 7-11 right across from it. They have different servings during the three periods of the day. And since it's a street stall with street snacks/food; it is really very cheap and cheery! -- The morning has your typical congee, street food (curry fish balls and other fried stuff) and fried vermicelli (2 variations: 1 is soy sauce based vegetarian, the other has ham). -- During mid-day, they will offer a lunch option with rice or noodles with an assortment of stir fry toppings. -- Evening/night snack is the morning stuff revamped... and you can also get these freshly made delish waffles with peanut butter, condensed milk and sugar topping. Simply the best here, others in Causeway Bay, Mongkok and TTS has not done a good job like Ada. When Ada was closed for 5 days during the Chinese New Year, I was really sad, so this place does really make you look forward to street snacks! So what if the ladies here (all ladies, my brother noticed and said that's probably why the food is so good) can be rudish when you appear you are not ready? That's HK street food style in general - don't waste my time and when you know I am there for you, and don't take it personal.

It's conveniently located covering a full corner, just across the MTR Exit C, and the end of the 'red part' of Lockhart Road. They close at around 11pm so it's the place to grab something quick before or after a drink in Wan Chai. First time I saw the place I was walking towards Causeway Bay and it reminded me of the ones I had seen on the Kowloon side. I tried to think of similar places around this district, or the ones close by, and couldn't come up with any but the one on the corner close to Times Square. Ada is in fact one of those last street food stalls that remains in this area despite it being turned into big chains propriety for the most part. That's why it's unique. The food, as a proper street food 'restaurant' is nothing special but you know what you get. Actually, you see everything on display and even being cooked in front of your eyes. Appearance wise, I find it charming. Okay, it's a little run down, looks dirty and old but charming nevertheless. It's definitely not the place to have a snack every day and I wouldn't recommend it for its food, but I hope it will stay around for a long time and keep that part of Hong Kong spirit a little more alive.

Sheung Kee Delicacy Restaurant is located in the Happy Valley cooked food market. Like most dai pai dong cooked food markets, it is a possibly less than sanitary cluster of communal tables surrounded by individual kitchens. However, if you stick to my two rules of; number one, always rinse the cutlery, and number two; never look in the kitchen, you'll find the food here absolutely excellent. Luckily, the last time I visited, we had a large group of twenty, which means we can have a good range of dishes and try many different flavours. However, with this large group, the McDonald's style bolted down tables for four didn't quite work, so the restaurant had to improvise by putting large boards on top of these tables and surrounding them with stools. Yes, classy I know. Dishes worth a particular mention include the clams with black beans sauce, the scallops with garlic and rice noodles, the garlic roasted chicken, and the sweet and sour pork. In fact, the sweet and sour all at Sheung Kee is probably the best sweet and sour pork that I've had in Hong Kong. Amazingly, we had approximately 20 dishes for 20 people, so one dish each, and a copious amounts of Blue Girl beer, and yet the bill still only came out at around HK$150 per person. The staff, despite speaking very little English, were brilliant. Then made sure to stop us from ordering too much, and also made excellent suggestions when we started to order dishes that were too similar. I'm a big fan of this place. I recommend that you get that as soon as you can for a good feed.
