I'm constantly on the hunt for good Vietnamese food in Hong Kong. It almost as hard to find as affordable housing. Coming from California where Vietnamese food is cheap, readily available, and second to none; Vietnamese food in Hong Kong has mostly been disappointing - especially the banh mis.
When I saw a friend repeatedly post about Banh Mi Bakery on Facebook, I knew I had to go check it out. To my surprise, there was no line for this place on a Saturday night at 7pm, in fact, there was only one other table in there. It definitely made me hesitate on whether or not I made the right decision. Fortunately, we sat down in the cute restaurant and was immediately approached by the friendly server which put us at ease a little bit. The items on their menu doesn't feel authentic Vietnamese; it feels more like a Vietnamese and Chinese fusion. There was at least 15 different banh mis on the menu so A+ for variety. Some of them were definitely not authentic, like curry beef tendon. In the end, my friend and I ordered the one with pate, vietnamese sausage, and pork belly topped with pickled daikon radish and carrots. Additionally, we got the "mixed rice" with chicken skewers.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the banh mi. It's probably been my favorite in Hong Kong so far. It's flavorful and the baguette was crispy on the outside and not hard. There was plenty of the picked veggies, which I loved. The pate was a key element that I feel like a lot of the banh mis in Hong Kong is missing. The mixed rice wasn't anything special but definitely edible. For drinks, I tried the iced dripped coffee. I would probably skip this if you've craving a real cafe sua da. It just doesn't come close to the real deal. My friend had one of their summer drinks, an iced passion fruit drink. This was very flavorful and refreshing after the long walk over to the restaurant.
Being in Kowloon City, it's definitely a slight trek to get over here so I'm not sure I would go all the way over there just to hit up this restaurant. If you're in the area and craving a above average banh mi, check this place out. read more
