On the land side was traffic, laundry hung out high rise windows, and folks walking their kids and/or dogs. On the water side of the surrounding Hong Kong real estate were fishing boats, house boats, luxury yachts, a colorful abandoned old restaurant, a funky dry dock complex, and other rustic tour boats such as ours. Gayle and I really enjoyed our peaceful time out on the water, while wondering who could afford to live or work in a place with so much history and character.

Cheung Chau 長洲 is one of those fisherman village and island . The words mean " Long Island " that probably describes the length of the few beaches on the island . We visited it in January 2026 . It was a beautiful day with blue sky and cool breeze from the ocean. We tried the home made fish balls and beef tendon with noodles in soup ( shop name is 偉記麫家 Wai Kee noodle shop " . The noodle soup , deep fried fish skins , beef tendons , milk tea with evaporated milk were all tasty ! We hiked a short hike like one hour , toured all the famous sits on the island . Please see the photos for the hill top view , Cheung Chau hotel , dessert house , Bao Mountain 包山 martial arts school , ancient craving in giant rocks . It was a pleasure trip !

Cheung Chau is apparently a popular place to eat for locals. I did always try my best to eat as good of food here as possible. The first time I visited here was the day I decided to end things with an ex. It was a difficult day for me but I was at least able to enjoy a beautiful day at the beach with friends. Be careful though where on the beach you are. Some parts of the beach might be cleaner than others. The second time I came here, I was with a new friend who showed me a place on the cliff where we could I watch the sunset. We were getting to know each other, but for some reason by the end of our day together, I decided to confess that I had a crush. It was perhaps the combination of the sunset, the music playing, and the nature of our conversation. That's how romantic a beach cliff sunset is! This is all to say, this island is beautiful and worth a stop by if you have time in Hong Kong.

The Shelter Cove Marina (otherwise known as Hong Kong Marina), is one of a handful of places in Hong Kong where you are park/ moore your dinghy or yatch in Hong Kong. I say a handful because this is afterall still quite a fancy and expensive past time here, despite being surrounded by the sea on 3 sides. Coming to the marina itself is a bit of an out-of-town experience, leaving the Sai Kung highway you will find yourself twisting through country lanes and village houses, before suddenly heading down a hill and discovering that you are literally right on the side of the cove. The view is magnificent but you have to be careful if you were driving here in the evening. At the end of the path you will find a wide opening and you have arrived at the Hong Kong Marina. You park on the side of the marina and several jetties jut out to the different yatchs and speedboats which have been parked here. Behind you will find the pinkish/ brown looking club house which has a restaurant called "The Terrace". It has both inside and outside seating and depending on the weather I think sitting outside is a must. The menu isn't exactly a huge one but the choices are quite wide- on one hand you will have paellas but on the other you will have local offerings like baked pork chop rice. I am happy to report that the food here is extremely good and fitting for the wondering setting you find yourself in. I haven't tried the wine as I was driving was told it was ok. Bring CASH- they don't take cards and you will not find an ATM machine anywhere here.

The pier provides ferry rides to lei Yu mun fishing village, which is a popular place to go for…read moreseafood. The ferry comes at 30 minute intervals and is really inexpensive (less than 10 hkd). It's a good experience to ride on the ferry and is one of the most cost effective ways to see Hong Kong on the Victoria Harbour. I suggest riding both during the day and evening. The view of the Hong Kong skyline is a completely different experience during the day and during the evening.

The hike is short if you just keep walking non stop, it will be around 75 minutes (5 km) or so, but there are pit stops that worth visiting along the way. GETTING THERE You can catch a 20 minute or so ferry ride from Central Pier中環碼頭 You can go to either Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan piers. For my hike, I started at Yung Shue Wan because the ferry was there when I got to the Pier STARTING POINT: YUNG SHUE WAN PIER/VILLAGE This is where the local residents actually live. This section is less touristy and quiet. The restaurants here is a lot smaller and have more traditional HK street style food PIT STOPS: 建興亞婆豆腐花 Ah Por Tofu Pudding Hung Shing Yeh Beach 洪聖爺灣泳灘 Hilltop Pavilion Lo So Shing Beach 盧鬚城泳灘 Sok Kwu Wan Tin Hau Temple 索罟灣天后宮 Sok Kwu Wan Business Area 索罟灣 ENDING POINT: SOK KWU WAN FERRY PIER 索罟灣碼頭 PRO TIPS: Please wear comfortable shoes. I know this is not real hiking. But it is just painful to see people wearing their heels doing the walk. Bring or buy bottle water so you will stay hydrated. Remember to bring your bathing suit if you want to have a dip. VERDICT: This is a safe route for me as I was by myself and I am not really a hardcore hiker. There are so many little places to get a snack so perfect for me more like a food crawl away from the City.

My friend and I took the ferry to Lamma Island one late afternoon and it's one of the best decisions I've made. The sunset that day was absolutely gorgeous (and I have been to many beautiful places and saw my beautiful sunrises/sunsets). My friend lived in Aberdeen so the view is her daily usual (so jealous!) Anyways, I prefer the ferry ride from here to Lamma Island than the one from Central. The boats are smaller and more intimate. You could even go on the deck on a beautiful day such as this one to appreciate nature's gift!

There's a lot of vendors selling knick-knacks and stuff on the promenade. There's a pier. There's boating. It's nice to take a walk here. My mom said she went hiking around here a while ago. My absolute favorite place in Hong Kong!…read more The hike to get here is not easy, but it's not hard. It is a well-defined path and parts of it are shaded. The hike has lots of trees and vegetation along the way. The beaches though are fantastic! White sand and clear water! I am from San Diego, California, and these beaches are way better than any beach here. We came during the week, and there were other people in the trail, but very few. Once we got to the beach, we walked passed the first ones and stayed at the third beach (the one with couple cute tiny restaurants in the back). We were the only ones in the water. My fiance grew up coming to this place several times per year, so these beaches are something special to his family. I am very happy they took me here :)
