Come here for the drinks or for their attempt at Latin / Mexican bar food and bring some good company to boot. This is one of those places where a good time depends on who's drinking and who's not. The place has plenty of seating on the inside and quite a section for outdoor action. Folks can smoke and drink as they please outside with no problems. On the inside they have TVs galore, usually broadcasting Mexican soccer / futbol games. The staff is not pretentious and they have provided good service each time I'm here. Don't be nervous about trying to say the words on the menu, chances are the nearly app Nepalese staff might have trouble saying it too. Let's one thing straight: the "Mexican" food here is close to an abomination. Anyone coming here to get their fix of sopa tortilla or the next great mole poblano will be sorry they did. The bar is stacked with versions of bar friendly Mex, which includes nachos, quesadillas, and tacos. Most of the aforementioned is incredibly mediocre, but being that HK is not blessed with quality Mexican fare, the food at Tequila Jack's is hardly a surprise. Do however, indulge on their themed nights. On Saturday nights for example, is steak night for $108 each. It is a 10oz steak with some fixins like fries, veggies, and corn on the cob. I'm usually not terribly crazy about cheap steak but theirs is a slight exception. My steak has been cooked perfectly each time and the marbling / fat actually melts in your mouth. I have been here since the prices were $90 and the steak has been one of the only highlights food wise. On the drink front, they have a legit array of Mexican beers along with a stellar selection of tequila. It's probably the most abundant collection of tequila I've seen in the hood. The prices per shot aren't cheap ($140?) but if money doesn't matter as much the drunks are in their own league at TJ's. Lastly, if you're sitting outside at night: Watch out for our furry friends running around. They have caused quite a stir in the past. And *do not* feed them.

It came with a little salad and sausage and ham (which I didn't realize and would have asked not to have), and a wonderfully flaky croissant. This is a neighborhood place for workers mostly. We ate here because it's very near the Courtyard Marriott where we're staying (Shek Mun MTR). If you find yourself in the area, it's a great choice, and breakfast is available all-day.

That told me enough to at least visit TAP and check things out. Definitely the vibe I was hoping for, with a variety of draft beers available for a multitude of palates. I love how there's a food menu here too so you can snack while drinking! We tried a few beers, but the ones that stood out were the Honey Longan Lager and a sour Lingonberry Soursop Ale! The flavor combinations were great, and also unique finds you couldn't get at other shops! We ordered some food to eat as well - the garlic fries were VERY garlic-y, and we also got the lap cheung spread on bread. Think of pate but made with lap cheung! Super unique find as well. If you're into craft beers, then absolutely stop in The Ale Project if you're in the area!

So when I stumbled across one (the Ale Project) in the middle of Mong Kok a couple of weeks ago, it felt like striking gold. The place had a great vibe, the beer was excellent, and it was full of friendly people just enjoying the afternoon. A perfect little discovery in one of the busiest neighborhoods in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

The flavors of the pork sandwich didn't work well together and the bread came soaked-through soggy. * The lobster broth pasta was well... noodles in strong lobster broth. * For dessert, we decided on the mascarpone donuts. Sad, deflated little puffs. It's worth noting that they are baked with mascarpone, not mascarpone-filled as we had hoped. Overall, food & service was okay. That's a great price, and I figure if even the food is awful, it's still not much more than two drinks. As others said, this place is somewhat a hidden gem. Its entrance is a narrow commercial building entrance on Nathan Road, right by Hillwood Road, closer to Jordan than TST. Located on the second floor, the big windows look out to verdant shades, totally blocking out the hustle and bustle outside. The price of afternoon tea has increased, but at HKD128, still a fair price if no longer a steal. We ordered flavored fresh-squeezed lemonades (or you can choose tea, coffee or soda), and our food arrived on a wooden board: two hamburger sliders, two salmon croissants, bacon wrapped asparagus, mac & cheese, BBQ fries and brownies. All is quite tasty except for the mac & cheese, which I find really bland. Applegreen bills itself as offering Californian cuisine. Their menu has lots of salad, and pasta ranging from carbonara to tequila lime chicken to mentaiko. There are also carne asado quesadilla, Jamaican chicken wings, jambalaya flatbread and more, just to show how international the menu is.

For Hong Kong, this restaurant is quite spacious. I've always been able to grab a seat every time I came in the afternoon. I've tried many different dishes here and usually it doesn't disappoint! What I like the most about Applegreen is that they're not just a salad house. They have a pretty wide array of dishes and drinks on the menu. But of course, if you want to eat "healthier", they have plenty of salads to choose from. Most of their salad has "half" servings, which is actually misleading. Their half portion is enough for 2-3 people if you order it with a second or third dish. Their "full" serving of the salad is humongous. Probably more suited for 3-5 people. Just be warned! Also as a tip, if you order salad you can request FREE banana bread to go with it. For their other dishes, they have your typical pastas, but what I like is their Flatbreads. Think of it as a very thin crust pizza. Quite tasty and large in portion. They also have some more unique items from their varying breakfast menu, such as honey glazed bacon, eggs benedict, or other experimental items. As for their drinks, most of their tea-juices have unlimited refill! Surprisingly an uncommon thing in Hong Kong. Applegreen is moderately priced. But for the portion and quality, its a pretty good deal. Its also conveniently located by the Jordan MTR station.

It was a Saturday night and my boyfriend and I were feeling far too lazy to venture out further…read morethan a few stops from Tai Wai. I did a quick search and found this seafood restaurant around a residential district on the riverside - Garden Rivera in English. Usually, nearby residential areas in Tai Wai and Sha Tin can you find some pretty good local family-run restaurants, and Rivervine was no exception. Not simply this, but the restaurant was super cheap and has now become a worthy contender to some Sai Kung seafood eateries because of its proximity to the abode. Although it calls itself a seafood restaurant, its signature dishes actually consist of: chicken and abalone congee, and roast pigeon. Now, there are a few roast pigeon places in both Tai Wai and Sha Tin that have become renowned across the foodiesphere in Hong Kong, so I wasn't bringing my hopes up about this particular dish - especially since, in conjunction with the congee, it comes at the super deal of 52 bucks. (The congee on its own is $18.... so yes, don't expect real abalone, and don't expect much of the imitation either.) The pigeon was just so-so, not as tender or as succulent as other places, but for how much it cost - a pretty damn good deal, and if you're like me, you're just gonna dip it in the excellently roasted salt anyway so you won't really be able to discern any subtle flavours if there were. The congee was good, mainly because the two odds pieces of chicken were so perfectly salty and complemented the jok well. The abalone imitation, I think sea whelk is usually the textural substitute, was fine - and portioned so that each person had one slice each. What do you expect for $18? As for seafood, the quality of the cooking doesn't really come close to the Sai Kung seafood masters but you're paying considerably less. There is an ongoing deal for $158 - you pick three seafood items on the menu, including scallops with garlic vermicelli, razorclams, and crab with ginger and scallions. The razorclams were so fat and juicy, and we asked for black bean razorclams, so they had onions and red peppers fried with them too. The scallops were fresh, and they served us four pieces (!!!), but the vermicelli was a little overcooked so it wasn't very nice to eat with the scallops. In all, there's definitely a return visit in the works, especially when we can't be bothered to head all the way to Sai Kung for a seafood fix.
