Part of a Chain German Style Restaurant in Hong Kong, "King L" has several locations, mostly in touristy locations. This one that we frequently visit is located in the New Territories of Hong Kong, which is equivalent to going to the country side in a Canadian or American town. From my home the drive takes about 30 to 45 mins. which is really nothing in N. American standard, but in Hong Kong, its considered an outing! Being out in the "country" has its advantage, and that is the main reason we would drive out to this location rather than going to the ones within town. They have ample parking right outside the restaurant, for us its a plus, as we have many seniors in our family and that really makes it easy for them! Just step out the car and you are there! Food wise, its good quality food, don't be too picky with their "Germaness" (if there is a word). They do have all your popular German items, but still with a twist to suit the Asian palate. One item that is very popular in Hong Kong, its the Schweinshaxe (Bavarian Ham Hock), most prized part of the ham hock is the very crispy crackling!! The meat is still tender and not dry, pared with a tall mug of German Beer, and you will have a great party dish! As you can see from my many photos (btw this is a compilation of my many visits over the years), they have a good selection of items for their buffets, (served during weekend for lunch, so please call ahead to confirm availability). They also offer special price for Seniors 65 and over! So if you want a mini outing to the "countryside", why not try this unique restaurant that brings a little bit of Bavaria to Hong Kong!

Today, I would like to introduce you guys to this Taiwanese food stall. I suppose I would just call this 5 Degree as there was not any English name for this. One of its specialties is the Chinese pancakes and some prefer calling it flaky scallion pancake. It is a savor flatbread folded with oil and scallions. It originates in Chinese culture and it is huge in Taiwan. For western pancakes, they are made from batter but this is made from dough. The pancakes were very crispy and freshly made in front of you. So beware. You could taste the scallions right away and the entire pancakes were just so satiny and smooth that you could eat that all day. I remember when I tried that in Taiwan, some of them were always just a little too chewy but not from here. Apart from the Chinese pancakes, try the bubble tea a.k.a. tapioca milk tea, which is also one of the signature Taiwanese drinks. You have to line up in the the check out area which is outside the restaurant of where you pick up your food. You select the food options you want and you pay by cash, credit card, or your octopus card. What's an octopus card you ask? Good question. It's a card that you use to pay for the public transportation in HK. Apparently, some restaurants always use it as a form of payment. Since I'm from San Francisco, CA, this octopus card is similar to a clipper card haha. Make sure you know what you're getting because the line moves quickly and you wouldn't want to be holding up the line. Once payment is completely, go inside the restaurant and lineup to pick up your food. You provide them with your receipt and they grab your items for you. This is an express food shop, kind of like Panda Express. It probably takes a minute for them to grab your items. I ordered K2 which included preserved eggs and minced mest congee, one egg, one egg roll, and some noodles. I paid $27.5 HK which is equivalent to $3.52 USD. The portion size was great for the price! I was really satisfied with my food and the price I paid for it. This place is really good people want a cheap bite and want their food ASAP! Haha.

This location has a little bakery on the outside that sells egg tarts and typical bakery food. On weekend mornings, you'll see a long line at the bakery section because the pastries taste great and are really affordable - hk$7 for a pineapple bun and hk$10 for a pineapple bun with a slab of butter, which is a hk staple. They also sell Mexican custard buns, which I realized are really popular at these chain hk cafes, but I've never tried them. I did try the egg tarts here for just hk$6. They're so good! Flaky just the way I like it, but not as sweet as nyc egg tarts. Mind you, these bakery items are available not only as to go orders but to stay orders. They make great breakfast food or even an afternoon snack. The first time I ate here was for breakfast and I ordered one of those set meals. I got the beef with pasta in tomato soup. The set included a hot drink and two buns with egg and ham. The meal wasn't that memorable but I came back for dinner cause the food pics looked so good. I love hk baked minced beef over rice/spaghetti, and the ones here are unbelievably good. I love how perfect the egg they add on top looks and it's runny! I'm not a big eater but I'm usually able to finish the whole dish because that's just how tasty it is. I've also had their soup noodles here before and the portion is huge. Honestly, you won't regret coming here. There's a wide range of items on the menu to suit everyone's tastes and budget.
