Hong Kong University Press has been one of the most useful local resources for me. The HKU Press…read moreis, and has been since the 1950's, an authority on Hong Kong Chinese history and cultural studies. It works hand in hand with the university, obviously publishing professors from their own departments, but also engaged in dialogue with professors overseas, to compile a respectable collection on HK scholarship. When I was at university in London, I did a lot of research on Hong Kong history and politics, and 'HKU Press' would always come up in the best articles or journals. Now that I'm back in my favourite city, I can order off HKU Press ONLINE with 20% off web orders, shorter delivery times, and delivery cost only the price of the local mail courier!! For scholars and students to your every-day, run-of-the-mill Hong Kong citizen, the HKU Press online store and shop offer over 50 new titles every year (mostly in English to meet the demands of international readers). It is one of the few portals one can order off textbooks on Hong Kong contemporary politics, including my most recent acquisition: "The Dynamics of Social Movement in Hong Kong" (ed. Stephen Wing Kai Chiu and Tai Lok Lui). Very interesting read. The Press also have some incredible book series covering Hong Kong history, law, politics, economics, and so on, pushing the boundaries of Hong Kong scholarship for decades. Particularly pleased with their Queer Asia book series, which analyses non-normative sexualities in Asia - one of the first series to look from this non-West perspective. Huge fan, thanks for the books and keep them coming!

I am reminded of the Asian guy meme, "Had one night stand...but too many books to fit on it." Who…read moregoes this crazy over books? Hong Kong people, apparently. Every year, the HK Book Fair attracts literally a million people to the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre, making it one of the most popular events of the nation. Moms and dads queue for hours to buy the best high school level practice books for their 5 year olds. Media coverage is extensive, creating strange attractions like a celebrity couple bringing their baby for photo ops and some random cosplay models. If you take a venturous step into this giant, crowded convention, you'll soon realize that books represent about 70% of it. It's actually an event dedicated to the pursuit of culture and learning, but the portion dedicated to books is still shockingly massive. You've got books covering every topic, from cooking to politics to adult colouring books, in every medium, from paper to electronic to multimedia. Adjacent to the main area, you have pavilions dedicated to showcasing different countries with decorated booths and reps with pamphlets. Next to that is a giant room filled with homemade stationary and trinkets. If books aren't your thing (or you can't read Chinese), the stationary area is almost like a flea market of handmade crafts and is worth your time. HKBF 2017 happened concurrently with Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo which housed multiple sports-related vendors, including a giant water station by Watsons. With books and sports under one roof, the Convention Centre was practically a nurturing pod for the ideal child. Despite not buying anything, getting claustrophobic, and queuing for over an hour in the summer heat just to get inside, I'm glad I went to check it out. HKBF is truly a cultural phenomenon and a real eye-opener. I probably won't go again but I definitely enjoyed feeling more scholarly for a couple hours. (4/100) - 2018

It's been a few years since my last time in HKBF. Yeah those were the years where the HKSF was…read moreabused by those "young models", selling what they called "books"... Flashback 10 - 15 years, similar thing happened. People were crazy about comics and queuing for hours just to get to the front of the queue to buy some limited edition action figures. Well, I'm glad they moved the whole thing to the comic-con immediately followed HKBF. Same goes for the young models. I guess they were fairly unpopular in Book Fair, and this year they mostly disappeared, at least not in my sight. Instead, a lot of great publishers, a lot of actual authors around. One of the main reasons to go to HKBF is for the local authors, as they are the ones that specifically published their books around the Fair. Also, they are now often with proven popularity and fan-base online (well, and proven quality work, of course...), so it's much easier to pick and buy the right books. For book shops (like PageOne) that doesn't publish books, they still do a great job selling a lot of popular books at a discount. Nothing wrong with that, really, but some of the books I'd definitely prefer the Kindle version these days. (But some I'd still buy a physical copy, obviously.) All in all, a very decent experience, no disturbing young models, and loved the idea that they have now extended the opening hours on Fri and Sat to midnight.
