It's been a few years since my last time in HKBF. Yeah those were the years where the HKSF was abused by those "young models", selling what they called "books"...
Flashback 10 - 15 years, similar thing happened. People were crazy about comics and queuing for hours just to get to the front of the queue to buy some limited edition action figures. Well, I'm glad they moved the whole thing to the comic-con immediately followed HKBF.
Same goes for the young models. I guess they were fairly unpopular in Book Fair, and this year they mostly disappeared, at least not in my sight. Instead, a lot of great publishers, a lot of actual authors around.
One of the main reasons to go to HKBF is for the local authors, as they are the ones that specifically published their books around the Fair. Also, they are now often with proven popularity and fan-base online (well, and proven quality work, of course...), so it's much easier to pick and buy the right books.
For book shops (like PageOne) that doesn't publish books, they still do a great job selling a lot of popular books at a discount. Nothing wrong with that, really, but some of the books I'd definitely prefer the Kindle version these days. (But some I'd still buy a physical copy, obviously.)
All in all, a very decent experience, no disturbing young models, and loved the idea that they have now extended the opening hours on Fri and Sat to midnight. read more
