It is a "Take Away" sushi spot (no seating and a grab-n-go place). I eat primarily salmon sashimi and this is my bar on all quality of any sushi spot. For a "take away" local option in Sheung Wan, I think the quality and freshness compared to the Fusion grocery up the street where I most commonly "take away" is pretty similar if not a touch better. Prices are in line with what I would pay at Fusion too. In addition to sushi or sashimi, they have rice's, maki, hand rolls, sets, tempura, snacks...maybe 200+ options on their menu. So although both are pretty good in the "grab-n-go" sushi options in Sheung Wan, I would say Ninoen beats Fusion by a sliver...the quality is a touch better.

In fact, when the chef here walks into Dragon-i, they give him a table with bottles and celebrity treatment. Such is the stature of the patrons and this establishment over the years. All the sashimi dishes are amazingly fresh and well-conceptualized, the plating is aestheically-inclined and a bit Western in fact. You won't just get the basic silced sashimi here, it will usually come plated and sometimes with a tangy sauce or complements. I cannot single out a single sashimi dish but I am a big fan of the lobster congee with is wonderful near the end of a cold meal and before dessert, very moreish, very flavorful. It's around HKD 1,000 per head for omakase, and may be more expensive depending on what you want. But a good thing is you can tell them your budget and they can also figure out if that's doable. It's definitely a place for a business lunch or whoever you need to impress because it's a classy place - of course, in the Island Shangri-La. But I felt like I paid for the location and the ambiance more than the actual food, which I am generally not a fan of. The food tasted good, but the value wasn't that good. We're talking about almost $500 (~$60 usd) for a lunch set so it'd better be amazing and unforgettable, right? The sashimi was fresh, but nothing too special. It's good they gave us fresh wasabi, but for this type of place it's pretty much a standard. Their rolled beef slices stuffed with vegetables were delicious but a bit underseasoned. Codfish was good but nothing stood out. Same for the fried rice. It's just when food was put in a cute, small container, and served in a fancy environment, they'll trick our brains to think they taste better, but when I thought about the actual taste, it wasn't anything special. It's cool to see the chef cooking in front of us on the teppan, but he wasn't too friendly and mostly just did his own thing and cook in silence the whole time... The staff didn't check on us regularly. It wasn't easy to track a server down. I'd say overall the food was good but nothing so special that you couldn't find in another Japanese restaurant in HK; and there are so many of them. It's cool we came here for a nice brunch for a special occasion, but I'd be hesitant to come back again especially for the kaiseki - it's a big commitment!

Still, if you're staying in the hotel it's convenient. I wouldn't make a special trip just to dine here, though.

However, the vibe here is really chill and not at all pretentious, so I think living up to the name is the least of the staff's worries. The space is tiny and fits about 16 people at most. The only side I didn't like was the tempura; thought it was a bit overdone. Fish quality isn't mind blowing, but the pricing is very affordable (and I didn't get sick!) so a solid 3 stars it is.

Sushi Kuu is a fairly standard high end Japanese restaurant, of which there are MANY in Hong Kong. It is essentially Hong Kong people's favorite type of cuisine, so it's a really competitive space. The ambiance is quite nice here, so I would recommend it as a place to come after work with colleagues or with an SO or even your family. I've had a lot of things here and most things are pretty good, though fairly pricey, such as the sukiyaki, the sashimi, the sushi, the cod... the cod is probably my favorite. Recently, Sushi Kuu has seen the effects of shrinkflation. For those of you not familiar, this is kind of like inflation, however instead of increasing prices, they keep prices steady but shrink portion size.
