Sushi Express is a very fitting name for this place. It could be the name of a train zipping you off to sushi land. Here, the sushi zips towards you on a conveyor belt that swirls and winds around the restaurant. It's great for a solo eater like me because you can get a spot relatively easily and you are kept entertained by the sushi going around and around in circles. Haha...I'm lonely (-;
Regardless, Sushi Express isn't my favourite conveyor belt sushi. It's not even my favourite quick and dirty sushi pick me up. And let's be honest, it's just the belt novelty that makes it exciting. But for a sit down sushi restaurant, it is cheeeeeap!! HKD $8 a plate (CAD $1.40), no exceptions. Yellow plate, black plate, sushi, dessert. Doesn't matter. And there's strategy. Fill up with the ones with two pieces rather than one pieces. Sure, one-pieces are better quality fish but are you here to eat well or to eat cheap?
I've tried a lot of things off the belt. Favourites include the buttery yellowtail (1 piece), salmon roe sushi (2 pieces), torched salmon belly sushi (2 pieces), mango pudding, and the chocolate star cake. Remember, this stuff is making its way around a conveyor belt so freshness varies. My advice is to avoid the stuff that mixes fish together with some sorta filling, like mayo. I didn't get sick or anything but it didn't taste all that fresh. I'd also avoid the sea urchin, which I'd normally love if prepared well at a legit sushi place. The one at Sushi Express tastes like poo.
This place is all about self service. but don't hesitate to actually order things off the menu as well. The problem would be actually getting someone's attention. The servers here are whipping around like they're in a tornado. For a place that should be all about self service, the staff do a surprising amount of serving. Kudos.
Sushi Express is half a step up from supermarket sushi, a couple steps down from a specialized sushi takeout place, and about on par with other fast food options. Cheap, fast, and self-serving, Sushi Express rotates people in and out as quickly as the conveyor belt rotates sushi. You would enjoy this place if a) you're in a hurry b) you're a social hermit c) you are the boss of your own life and you won't let anyone make your goddamn choices for you.
