One of the staples is always the cheung fun (rice rolls), lathered in soy sauce, peanut sauce and sweet sauce, with a sprinkle of sesame. Their stuffed "3 treasures" are good as well. That is another classic dish consisting of green bell pepper, eggplant and tofu, each stuffed with a generous amount of fish paste. It's a difficult dish to get right. If not floured well the fish paste will not stick to the vegetables, and the veggies can get overly soggy due to the deep frying. But not here! They are generous with the amount of fish paste, and the vegetables were fried to decent crispiness. This is food that seems like they should be everywhere but is slowly getting replaced by trendy foods. It's also very difficult to get decent versions of these outside of Hong Kong. I highly recommend just stopping by and trying a few things as breakfast or afternoon snack.

Shatin is famous of it's chicken congee, Tai Yuen being in Fo Tan, (which is also a part of the greater Shatin district) is also celebrating its chicken congee. Whenever dining in Tai Yuen, you will first be greeted with a hefty pot of chicken congee, if you are lucky, the pot might be free of charge and refillable. For the food choice, just as any sik siu places, "trashy" is the word, the mantra and the golden rule. Imagine an oyster omelet with the rim so puffy and crispy that could only achieved with the excess fat that the omelet is fried in; deep fried mouth part of squids with every morsel crunchy on the outside, chewy and succulent in the inside. How about "roasted" baby pigeons that is actually deep fried to crispy perfection? All of them are sinful but undoubtedly good; especially served alongside with a bottle of ice cold beer, that is how most university students get wasted for the very first time.

It came with 2 half pieces of spam, one of it was overcooked and dry, the other one seemed undercooked. The beef was decent texture wise but it didn't have much flavor. We also ordered their toast with condensed milk and the toast was over toasted and too crunchy to my liking. Overall, it's an unique experience but don't be expect the food to be superb. Expect a wait during most mornings and afternoons, as folks are here to enjoy their unpretentious food. Most folks are here for their tomato soup, but specifically the tomato macaroni with beef (蕃茄鮮牛肉通粉) and their crispy buttered up buns (奶油脆脆). Often times I like to switch their classic dish up with instant noodle (蕃茄牛肉麵) and the crispy lemon honey buns (檸蜜脆脆). Together they go hand-in-hand with a milk tea or lemon tea for a complete meal. If tomato is not your thing, than skip this place. Even as an authentic DPD / Hong Kong cafe, they lack a lot of variety. For the non-tomato folks, they have breakfast items like ham, eggs, luncheon meat, and corned beef for around $30HKD. It's not a bad option, but it's not worth waiting in line for just that alone. Even though the staff is not the most well versed in English, there are plenty of expats here who have made it work. Their menu is in both Chinese and English and the seating is extremely tight, outdoor (#1) only, and not conducive to groups. While the lines are fierce in the morning, they are usually moving quickly since many folks are doing takeout. At most, it's 30-35 folks at a time. Even though they are technically in Central, the best way to get here is to get off at the Sheung Wan MTR station and walk directly from the A2 exit. After eating 永華麵家, we ended up coming here to continue our Wanchai food crawl. There was no lines so it only took around 10 minute or less for my order to be ready. I love that freshly prepared smell. Crispy on the outside and soft/chewy on the inside with just a hint of sweetness.... and of course the aroma of egg! Just the way I like mine!
