#ThrowbackThursday - Remembering Hong Kong…read more.. Conveniently located at Nathan Road near the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, we decided to have our final meal in Hong Kong at Daikiya Japanese Restaurant. It's a very solid all-you-can-eat option with two thick notebooks of pictured items to choose from. The raw and the cooked, the fish and the meat, the meal and the dessert... Sashimi - The usual suspects abound (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, etc.), but they also have hokkigai (surf clam), amaebi (sweet shrimp), Hokkaido hotate (scallop), and nishin (Japanese herring with roe). Served on a bed of ice and decorated with artificial flowers, each platter was well-plated... and delicious! Nigiri - There are plenty of winners here, but let's focus on the one that topped the list - Grilled Scallop with Crab Oil and Garlic. Seared enough to give that burnt flavor, dabbed with crab oil, then topped with roasted garlic... Need I say more? This was the highlight of our meal and, yes, my younger daughter and I had this over and over and over! Worthy runners-up - Grilled Flatfish and Prawn with Black Fish Roe. Rolls - An assortment of maki (sushi roll), temaki (hand roll), gunkan-maki (ship roll), and sashimi rolls was on the menu as well, but we were able to try only a few. The Mango and Soft-Shell Crab Roll was too small and had more cucumber than anything else. There simply were better options to be had. Grilled - Surf and Turf! Shrimp, scallop, oyster, lamb chop, beef, chicken, pork, and even pineapple. The best dish was the Sautéed Diced Beef with Garlic. Perfectly seasoned and cooked medium, these beef chunks were so tender and tasty! Dessert - Gotta save room for some (or all) of these - mochi, macaron, ice cream, tiramisù, brownie, crème brûlée, fruit, nut, and so on. We indulged in their special Milk Top, which had a limit of one flavor per person. We tried the Romantic Moment and Green Tea Harmony, which had soft-serve ice cream, red bean/paste, mochi balls, jellies, and rice crispies. The only way to cap off an AYCE! After restocking on calories, we were ready to head back to the hotel and then to HKIA. Daikiya was just what the doctor ordered to fill up our bellies before leaving. We totally enjoyed our stay in Hong Kong, but we had to wrap up our adventure. It was time to say goodbye... for now...

OHHHH MYYY GOOOOD... It's one of my best meals in HK, amazing!!!! I've never been to an AYCE like…read morethis, putting Vegas buffets to shame. No wonder HK is the paradise for foodies! 1) The menu was extensive, almost overwhelming (there are 2 books), including sashimi boat, nigiri, tempura, seared fish, hand rolls, California rolls, desserts, anything you can think of! My eyes lit up when I opened the menu like I saw gold. 2) The food quality was very good for the price we paid. Everything raw was fresh and chilled and the rest were all served hot and steamy. 3) Service was super efficient and courteous too. They tried to fulfill all your requests. 4) It can be packed so book an early table. 5) You won't break your bank here to be able to enjoy a quality AYCE. We were all so full at the end. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in HK! I hope they stay in business for a while and keep the quality up! **** I heard the other locations don't taste as good so not every Daikiya is the same.

This is the first time I try this location as it is close to my hotel…read more I was there in a weeknight and there is no wait. This chain store sushi is a bit different. It doesn't offer any ready-to-eat sushi. You order your sushi through a QR code. The sushi is fresh and tasty. However, one star being deducted is the water fountain where we get hot water to make green tea, which is rusty. The service is attentive.

So, I guess it's safe to say that all Genki sushi are not created equal?! I've eaten at every one…read morein Hawaii, a couple in Japan and now, in Hong Kong. At first glance, the menu is quite limited compared to the other Genkis in the world (thus the minus a star), but what they do serve is quality. The fish is so fresh and the cuts are larger. The menu is different and so is the pricing, but this Genki was a nice and refreshing break from all of the Dim Sum and Chinese cuisine here, lol! As the sushi usually comes out on the different colored individual plates, at this location when you order it, it comes out on a large platter... it looks nicer, but is a bit harder to share? We ordered a bunch of sushi and Fried chicken. The sushi was good, but I'd have to say the fried chicken was especially great... probably the best I'd ever have and I'm not kidding! It was light and juicy, cooked to perfection without any dark or chewy pieces (from being over cooked). I could've eaten chicken in lieu of the sushi and would've been super happy! All in all, everything was good. If you're in HK and need a break from Dim Sum, eat here!

My go-to robatayaki/yakitori place…read more It was crazily busy in the early days, but now I can quite get a table on a weekday just by calling them an hour ahead (usually). The quality has been top-notch and I got no complain with the food at all. When you first arrive, the greeting may feel subpar - when I am ALWAYS greeted by servers (locals or actual Japanese) with "irasshaimase" in literally all Japanese restaurants, I'm pretty spoilt. Here they would greet you with "do you have a booking?". But as soon as you are seated, the service is actually good. Food - to maximize the number of dishes we can try, we often go for two separate dinner sets, and we share between us. Their set is very decent and will not make you feel like missing out anything in the a la carte menu. My picks? Foie gras, ox tongues, chicken wings, porks, pretty much all the meats they make are good. The BBQ sauce maybe too salty for some of you, so some times I'll just have the skewers without the sauce. Usually I'll be like 110% full for the full set, so skipping the miso soup is not too bad a choice (and miso soup in HK is never as good as those in Japanese anyway). The sake selection here is pretty good too. But I'll recommend a 300ml bottle instead of a 750ml bottle, as you are guaranteed to be too busy eating. If I have to nitpick a bit, you can't really call the seating comfortable here. It's more a traditional Japanese robatayaki spots, tiny and tidy, but nothing fancy.

After coming here for a few times, we never even had to look at the menu. We always ordered the same stuff... beef, beef tongue, chicken wings, pork with asparagus, grilled corn, etc. Occasionally, we would order some specials that are listed on the wall. One of the items that I always order if the skewers aren't enough is the grilled rice ball with eel. (Make sure you order it towards the end, otherwise it might fill you up!) The quality of the food never disappointed me. If you're feeling up for some drinks, order some Asahi or some sake! The restaurant does not have many seats and they're often fully booked during dinner hours. Make sure you call to book in advance!

You start by queuing the noodle line and tell them which what number you want (from the menu). They only serve udon here but they have many types to choose from. You can pick from udon sets (basically the broth + topping) and order single or double amount of noodles. After you get the noodles you can grab side items such as fish filet, tempura, drinks, Etc. After you're done, you pay and add seasonings to your noodle. It's basically like a cafeteria line with self seating. Sometime there are huge queues here but from experience the line always moves fast. I've tried a few different sets here and they're all pretty good! My favorite is the sweet tofu. Simple and pure! They also accept the Octopus card, which is a plus.

I really like this place. It's cheap, it's convenient and it tastes good…read more I came to this place first as a friend recommended it. You line up and pick which udon and what size you would like. Then you can pick from a variety of add on tempura (chicken, vegetables, fish cakes etc.. The best was the egg but it seems to have gone from their menu). Then you can pick some rice balls, desserts and drinks if you like and then pay. You can then add spring onion/green onion and bits of fried tempura batter and pick up your cutlery. If you just want water then just around the corner is cups and some jugs of water that you can help yourselves to. Then you get to find a seat. The place can get pretty busy at peak times and they will stop serving when there are no seats available. They make the udon on site and it is fresh that day (you can see them making it behind the counter which is pretty cool. I really love the basic udon which I think is number 3 and recently I tried their seasonal beef sesame paste udon. Both very delicious!
