Tai Cheng used to be a solely owned local small bakery located in Central, they became famous after Chris Patten our final governor of Hong Kong became a big fan of their egg tarts, he even named it the best tasting egg tart in HK. And Tao Heung Group bought the name and the recipes from the original owner a few years ago and turned it into a chain bakery with nearly 30 stores scattered in the city.
Their egg tart still tastes as good as it used to be so as their sugar coated egg puff (it looks like a round doughnut completely coated in sugar, it tastes like a French Cruller with a even lighter texture), as a matter of fact, those sugar coated egg puffs are rarely seen anywhere else nowadays. Egg tart comes in 2 choices of crust - butter cookie or flaky. My choice is always the flaky one because that's how I remember egg tart from the old days tasted like. Egg tarts were always made in a flaky crust - until someone decide to change it to a cookie crust for less work and easier handling. But of course they both have their fans. Other items are regular local bakery's fare, what you find here you can find in other bakery chain.
Go for their egg tarts and egg puff, at $5 each they are a bargain not to be missed. read more
