Dr. Charles has provided caring, informed support from whatever I may be needing. From a simple stomach bug, to yearly health checks. The nursing staff are all so kind. Today, Pauline was extremely helpful and provides great service. Finally, Jenny at the front desk is always a joy. She is informed, ready to help and always kind on the phone. Thank you to the full central health team for years of great service in Hong Kong, and many more to come.
Central Health was originally a obstetrics and paediatric health care service, but has since become…read morea full GP/family practice care centre. In fact, many patients are probably there for general practice health concerns now anyway. However, the practice has continued its excellent reputation in obstetrics and child health care, as if evidenced by the number of pregnant ladies and kids running around! Nearly all (I think bar one) of the doctors are trained overseas, UK, US, Oz, and are excellent healthcare practitioners. I wouldn't go if they were not! They cater heavily to the ex-pat crowd, with the entire practice operating in English. Whilst the practice is a general care centre, they do continue to specialise in obs and gyny, and paediatrics. They also extensively cover psychiatry, psychology and counselling concerns. Unlike many of the practices in HK, Central Health unofficially runs an out of hours service. Of course if you need emergency care, you should ring 999, but if you need "emergency" care from your GP, existing patients can get it from Central Health, depending on the goodwill of the doctor. Appointments are usually quite easy to get at the Central clinic. There are also two other practices in Disco Bay and Southside. As with most HK health care, you will have to pay or produce your medical insurance.

This is made worse in HK if you do need GP help, and are an ex-pat. It can be daunting to go to an Chinese doctor, or difficult to find an English speaking doctor. If you are in this situation, I would recommend OT&P. They are primarily a family practitioner service, with a number of specialists doctors, running four clinics across HK Island. Think of them as your GP back in blighty, but with more doctors, more appointment availability, better healthcare. To be fair to the UK's NHS, OT&P are private, so you will need to pay or produce your medical cards. Dr Trodd at the Wan Chai practice is particularly good, I have always found his patient care excellent and recommend him highly. He also has an amazing view out of his office, so if you are uncomfortable being prodded and poked, you can always have a look out of the window across the harbour to TST. Just a few details for your digestion; the clinic is an hours clinic, as in they only work "working" hours. If you need out of hours care, you'll have to call 999 (there is some out of hours care for obstetrics). They are a dispensing clinic, so all the prescription meds are on site. No trip to Mannings for you then. There is also a lot of on-site testing that they can do. Personally, I have always found it very easy to get an appointment, but fortunately, I very rarely go. Super healthy me - yeay!
I should fair in saying this but I have never really had faith in chain medical service providers…read more They give me the feeling that they don't really care about their patients and they are just trying to bolster their coffers in asking you to go through absolutely unnecessary tests and so on. The fact that you seem to find them everywhere also gives me a sense that its medicine on the cheap. So you might be wondering why I actually bothered to go in the first place. That's because for one of my jobs I actually had to go to their centres for a pre-joining medical check. Needless to say their centre was big and clean, felt more like a showroom rather than a medical centre if I'm honest. I was led in to conduct the tests and they were extremely careful about what they did the whole way, despite the fact that they must all have to go through plenty of these humdrum tests all day long. The tests were completed very quickly and I noted that they had a dental practice at the same location. I thought to myself that since I'm here I might as well get that done as well; they actually had a place for me immediately and by the next hour I had it cleansed and looked at. All this brought to me the reality of the situation: we may all want a family GP who talks to us for half an hour and attends family weddings. The thing is though, nowadays we want good, cheap and quick medical service and UMP is right up there.

He was in our hotel room in 1.5 hours and saw my husband there, without us having to get in a taxi, travel to the medical center, register, and wait to see a dr there. This was SO much better for my husband, who had a fever and did not want to get out of bed. Dr. Kung was efficient yet thorough, and gave my husband some antibiotics as well as fever-reducing and anti-nausea medication. He also left his card for us to call him directly if my husband got worse. It wasn't cheap but it was so worth it to have a house call in our hotel room. We were very pleased with Dr. Kung and the house-call service offered.

I'm a dutchess of a hospital. Whaaaat?? Ok I guess I'll write a review…read more I've been here many times and for different reasons. Good or bad. I'd say it's overall a great hospital. You can tell that they're a very structured organization and everyone working here are well trained. Doctors and nurses are professional and polite. The nurses I have dealt with are so nice I actually wrote them a card to say thank you. The hospital took the past few years to revamp the entire place and I could see them upgrading section by section, and I like this place more and more. I'd like to make a special mention of the food there - the canteen has really good food, with a nice casual setting overlooking the race course. Clay pot rice is really famous but there's a wait for it. Not that I want to come here all the time, but if anyone reading this is concerned about the quality of doc or the place, there's nothing for you to worry about. If you have a good medical insurance, just go for it!
I'm American so the idea of universal health care is still foreign to me. My son was born in Hong…read moreKong so fortunately he qualifies to get free treatment at the public health clinics here. Navigating the health care system here has definitely been an adventure! I've learned that the process of waiting at a public health clinic is not as serene as a private clinic, but why pay hundreds of US dollars for a private doctor when you can get the same immunizations and quality care for free? As with anything run by the HK government, there's a process that everyone needs to follow here. When you arrive for your appointment you must go to the registration window and provide all required documents, get a number, and wait to be called. They will call your name over a loudspeaker, and since there are a lot of families waiting you might have to strain to hear your name being called (kids will be kids, some will be cranky and screaming so it can't be helped.) At times it can feel like you're just a number. Once called, a nurse will do the basics like measure your child's length and weight. You'll then speak with a case officer to discuss why you're there and what needs to be done. Then you'll finally meet a doctor. The doctor I met with was very thorough with my son and luckily he walked away with a clean bill of health. They are very good with record keeping and provide you with booklets and charts to keep track of your child's progress. I've also signed up for their e-mail list, which provides useful information for parents on what to expect at each milestone (3 months, 6 months etc.) along with tips on various subjects such as how to stay safe during flu season. Considering I pay nothing for such services, I am truly a fan!

Well, help is at hand. UMP Healthcare Group is a large medical services group in HK. Part of their group offers outpatient medical services, or to the lay person, a local GP doctors service. There are a lot of these local surgeries across Hong Kong, so you should be able to find a location convenient to you. The medical centre at Wan Chai is particularly good, primarily due to the excellent service from Dr. Yiu. Whilst this is quite a "local" feeling practice, Dr. Yiu's and his staff's English is perfect, so don't feel intimidated to come here as an ex-pat. I always find it very easy to get an appointment here within a couple of hours of calling, and once at the surgery, the wait to see the doctor is usually short. The consultations are thorough, so you can be confident that you are getting the best care. The services they offer include; general and specialist consultation, health checks, some minor outpatient procedures, inoculations, and travel health advice. On site, they also have x-ray facilities, and a dispensing pharmacy, so you don't have to go elsewhere for your prescriptions. Should you require any other specialist care, Dr Yiu will refer you as required. UMP accepts a number of medical insurance schemes, both personal and employer, so it is possible to visit and have the costs paid directly by your insurer.
