On the ground level you'll find meat and fish. The meat is pre-chopped and hung while much of the seafood is still alive and swimming - fresh! I tend to head straight upstairs. Up here there are loads of fresh veg to chose from (not much English spoken by vendors, but that's fairly standard at wet markets so I just buy what I recognise) as well as dried fish, spices and the like. If your dinner is of the fancy, party variety, you can also pick up some fresh flowers for the table. I can never get over how cheap they are here (my husband dosen't know I know this - but I since it's the thought that counts I still award full brownie points) - HKD86 for 15 blooms and some greenery. During my visit in Hong Kong I found this as I was going to Tai Cheong Bakery. The Farmers Market conveniently runs through a long street from Des Veoux Road and Graham Street and is located in the center of the walkway that connects the ferry pier and the footbridge that leads to Central. The market is small compared to other markets I have seen however the amount of veggies and fruit still makes this a place to not pass up! The vendors they are pretty nice and friendly. The variety of meat that they serve is absolutely amazing. I came on a Tuesday around noon and they still had a great selection of fruits vegetables and other things as well. They also have a market called Man Kee Shing Pork Chops that you can also buy live fresh fish and many different varieties of the meat as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. On Sundays they are organized by KFBG from 11AM-5PM and Wednesdays they are organized by SEEDS from 12PM-6PM. I came on a Tuesday where they were opened from 11AM-5PM. I knew the Farmers Market was going on when I walked past the Pier on my way to Lamma, and I knew I wasn't coming back on time to buy my veggies that day. I also knew I was coming back just to do exactly that the following Sunday morning. The market is a small one, where farmers offer their produce at large tables, placed in a square shaped area. The produce is seasonal so you'll find different veggies from time to time. Some of what they sell: leafy greens, okra, cucumber, beets, bitter gourd...Most of the farmers will expect you to ask them questions and it's a great place to learn about what you eat: there are no intermediaries so prices are fair, and affordable. The Wednesday one, which is a bit smaller than Sunday's, is organized by SEED, a foundation that promotes 'sustainable lifestyle' and has helped local farmers with the marketing of their produce. They even advertise and promote its farmers on their website so that you can get to know them beforehand. They would expect you to bring your own bag and it is also advisable to get there early, for fresher, greater variety. Do you have plans this weekend? Based in Tin Hau, a block or so away from the MTR along Electric Road, is this little mom and pop fruit stall, which does exactly that, it sells more off beat fruits, rather than the standard fare. First thing I notice is that the fruit is fresh and ripe, but not spoiled. I find in the supermarkets in HK, they have a habit of packaging fruit and veg into bags with x number of pieces, only for you to get home and find the half of them are rotten. Here, like a market stall, you can choose your fruit individually, and they charge by weight, not number. There is always plenty on display, but never so much that they have to keep the products out to spoil. They must actually do a roaring and fast turning trade. The main highlight for me and Mrs L, is the availability of slightly odd fruits, like custard apples. Some of these things are not so available in HK, so it's good to have a stall that has them in season. Give it a go, the staff are surprisingly nice, given it is a market stall and stall holders can be surprisingly pushy, these folks are happy for you to browse and take photos, even if you don't end up buying.

We bought good quality jackets, dresses, pajamas from here from bunch of shops. Also got lots of souvenirs at least than half of price compared to stores in malls and airports. There are many bakery and restaurants near the streets. All selling amazing and delicious looking HK style foods. We had some quick bites while shopping, all tasted so good. I'd highly recommended this area to all tourists looking to pack up their luggage with lots of shopping.

Discovered on a recent walk-about, I found that the North Point tram ends in the centre of this amazing wet market, which to be fair has its fair share of dry! So the wet side, as expected, caters the food angle, with an amazing variety of fruits, vegetables, and meats. Beware that the butchery is right in front of you, so if you are of a delicate "veggie" constitution, like the lovely Mrs L, you may want to turn away now...! I find a small handkerchief with a spray of something floral takes the edge off the meaty smells. On the veggie side of the scale, you will not be disappointed. The variety and freshness of the produce is so brilliant, I don't think I want to ever shop in Wellcome again! You really need to take a look for yourself and see. Beyond the wet side, there are also a number of "dry" stalls, selling clothes, bags, toys. It's basically like Ladies Market in Mong Kok, but set along a much wider street, so you don't feel like you are being squeezed into the consumer sausage machine. The goods are not the classic fake LV bags of Mong Kok, but there are loads of cheap bits, like gents swimmers for only HKD20. If you only wore them once they would still be a bargain! There is also a lot of ladies underwear for sale, but it does look a bit polyester, so perhaps not the best for HK! What it could do with is a few more cooked food places, you know, like street food. However, if you feel peckish, you could duck out easily onto King's Road and get a burger.

Today, you can still choose from a wide variety of fresh fish or other seafood. That is fish that are alive in a small tank swimming and thrashing. You choose your fish, or other amphibian dinner choice, and they kill, skin and scale it for you to take home and cook. Can't get much fresher than that unless you caught it yourself. Apparently they used to have poultry as well in the past. Fears of avian flu have made that market offering virtually obsolete. The selection of baskets and baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables was quite impressive. Rambutan. Longan. Durian. Cherries. Mangosteen. Water spinach. Choi sum. Grab some spices, too. There are also bakeries filled with egg tarts and pineapples buns (that don't have pineapple) and a shop that sells snake soup that does have snake. Did not sample that one.
