Are you a Donburi Don? Do you too get hungry at 1am? Then look no further than Doraya! This tiny little 20 seater is my go-to spot for sashimi on rice in Hong Kong. For lunch, they have a great set menu consisting of a medium size bowl of rice topped with various selections of sashimi, Udon (cold or hot), a small side of pickled veg and Tamagoyaki all for the great price of around HKD 80. On the other hand, for dinner, they offer a sashimi don special which consists of picking a range of 3-5 selections of fish and with each selection is 3 slices of sashimi - For example, if you ask for a sashimi don of tuna, yellow tail and 2 salmon, you will get a 3 slices of tuna, 3 slices of yellow tail and 6 slices of salmon. We usually get 3 salmon as it's the cheapest thing on the menu setting us back HKD 99 and it again comes with a small side of picked veg, Tamagoyaki and Miso soup. The first thing to say is the portions are generous. The sashimi is thick on the rice and it doesn't seem like the chef is skimping out at all (which is a rarity in Hong Kong). The second thing to say is the meat quality is top notch. I've walked past this place in the mornings and the fish comes freshly shipped every day, so there's none of this defrosted business of biting into a wet sponge of sashimi that you would normally get at cheap venues like Monster Sushi. The fish is so oily and fresh that there is not a single waft of fishiness when you walk into the restaurant. I've had other things like the wasabi octopus, ox tongue, fried chicken and fried oysters, but nothing comes close to the sashimi. What I also love about this place is that it opens till 2am on weekdays and 3am or later on weekends so if you're feeling peckish for a quality midnight gorge, this is a great option! - I know we've definitely been guilty of doing this a few times! They also have a bigger venue at Tsim Sha Tsui, but the fact that the Causeway Bay venue is so much smaller and the walls are made of wooden panels in true Japanese décor, it really gives that extra Japanese feel that the TST venue does not offer. With the quality, the value for money and the authenticity of this place, it's no wonder why on many evenings there are waiting times of up to an hour to get in. Doraya is a rare gem in the Hong Kong Japanese cuisine market which draws me here on a near weekly basis and for anyone who's reading this, I'd highly advise to follow suit. read more
